(MNS photo) Manila, Philippines (AFP)  – Eight in 10 Filipinos are worried a festering South China Sea territorial dispute could lead to “armed conflict” with the world’s most populous nation, an independent polling outfit said Friday. Manila-based Social Weather Stations said this sentiment had weighed on people’s minds since the Philippines backed down from a tense standoff with China over control of rich fishing grounds around Scarborough Shoal in 2012. The study showed 84 percent of 1,200 respondents were “worried” about armed conflict with China. About half were “worried a great deal” while more than a third were “somewhat worried”. The same poll has been conducted every year since 2012, and in each of the surveys at least 80 percent of respondents have been concerned that the sea dispute could escalate into a full-blown conflict with the Philippines’ Read More …

Group asks Supreme Court to void Bangsamoro deals

Muslim women from several organizations in Metro Manila rally outside the Senate on Monday, January 26, to call for the immediate passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law. Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday said he is calling for the suspension of hearings on the BBL following the deaths of at least 37 policemen in an ambush on January 25 in Mamasapano, Maguindanao by MILF fighters. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa) on Friday asked the Supreme Court to declare as unconstitutional the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) and the Comprehensive Areement on the Bangsamoro (CAB). In a 26-page petition, Philconsa, led by its president Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and former Sen. Francisco “Kit” Tatad, also asked the high tribunal to stop the Budget Department from releasing funds to pursue or implement the FAB, the CAB, and the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law. The group said the balance of unspent funds intended for the contested deals should instead be returned to the National Treasury. Likewise, the petitioner also asked that the Commission on Audit be disallowed from auditing funds and expenses incurred by the government panel. The chair of the government peace panel should also be admonished and be warned “to be more prudent and cautious in dealing with the amorphous, self-styled entity, exclusively to the exclusion of other Muslims, Christians and Lumads,” said the group. BMW aiming for fuel cell production car by 2020

A BMW logo is seen on a car at an automotive dealership in Landover Hills, Maryland, December 31, 2014. AFP PHOTO / SAUL LOEB (Relaxnews) – After carefully testing the waters, BMW has decided to go ahead with the development of its own fuel cell car, which could go on sale by the end of the decade. A company source, who briefed AutoExpress on the matter, said that the company was aiming for a 2020 reveal as it believes that the technology – which will be in its second-generation form by then – will be ready for BMW’s client base. The comments follow an interview late last year where the German luxury car maker confirmed that after some time experimenting with the technology that it was ready to build a test car for putting fuel cell technology through its paces. However, BMW’s head of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson stressed to Autocar that environmentally focused BMW buyers shouldn’t get too excited. “The real issues lie not around what we can do, though, but whether the infrastructure can be built up to supply hydrogen in the marketplace cost-effectively,” he said. Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of the Hyundai Tuscan Fuel Cell CUV going on sale. And though only 70 southern California residents own one, they have driven a combined 475,000 miles (over 764,000 km) and counting. “Over the past year, Hyundai’s Tucson Fuel Cell owners are showing the world today that this technology represents the next generation of zero-emissions transportation,” said Read More …
