Grace Poe nearly ties VP Binay in latest poll survey

Senator Grace Poe (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Sen. Grace Poe has nearly tied Vice President Jejomar Binay in the latest presidential preference survey conducted by independent think tank IBON Foundation. The IBON survey conducted from May 13 to 23, 2015 showed that 13.8 percent of respondents wanted Binay to be the next highest leader of the country while 13.7 percent of respondents preferred Poe. Coming in third place was Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who was preferred by 7.6 percent of the respondents. IBON explained that the respondents were not given any names of potential candidates during the survey but were asked to name the person they preferred to be the next president. The survey had 1,496 respondents. The IBON survey has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3 percent. While he has repeatedly stated that he has no plan of seeking re-election, President Benigno Aquino III landed in fourth place with 4.2 percent of respondents wanting him to remain in office. Following Aquino in the ranking was his close ally and former running mate Interior Secretary Mar Roxas who was preferred by 3.8 percent of the respondents. The IBON said among the issues when the survey was conducted were the corruption allegation against Binay as well as the mounting speculation that Poe will run for President. IBON Foundation executive director Sonny Africa said that the results of poll surveys might change significantly once personalities file their certificates of candidacy. In a two-page department order, De Lima tasked the fact-finding panel to determine the possible commission of either criminal or administrative offenses by private individuals and public officials over the course of the deportation proceedings by the Bureau of Immigration against Wang Bo. The team was given one month or 30 days from receipt of the department order to come up with a report on its findings. Making up the panel are Atty. Peter Chan Lugay, SRA Cesar Reyes, Atty. Arnold Diaz, Atty. Catherine Camposano-Remigio, and Atty. Glenn Anthony Quimio. The team was ordered to review and evaluate relevant documents on Wang Bo’s deportation case, as well as conduct interviews of personalities involved, including the Chinese fugitive and the Immigration officials involved in his arrest last February 10 and the May 26 issuance of a resolution taking him out of the government’s black list. Miriam wants probe on P53.14B taxes Malampaya contractors owe to gov’t

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago asks questions to Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Chief Negotiator Mohagher Iqbal during the third public hearing on the Mamasapano incident. Santiago asks committee to reconsider showing Mamasapano video, says it can be admissible as evidence in court. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has called for a Senate investigation on the P53.14 billion underpaid income taxes Malampaya contractors allegedly owe the government. In Senate Resolution 1388, Santiago said the government must balance the interest between profit of investors and state revenue while at all times ensuring that public interest is primordial. She said the Commission on Audit stated that Malampaya gas field owes the government P53.14 billion in underpaid income taxes from 2003 to 2009. The contractors claimed that the amount was deductible from the government’s 60 percent share of taxes during the period. This view was supported by the Department of Energy, but COA said Presidential Decree 87 and 1459 are clear that the minimum government share was 60 percent of the net earnings of any exploration. Among the contractors involved were Shell Philippines Exploration BV, Chevron Malampaya LLC, and Philippine National Oil Company. “Congress should intensify existing legislation to clarify revenue sharing issues on the Malampaya gas field project,” Santiago said in the resolution. Malampaya is a deepwater gas-to-power project located in Palawan supplying three gas turbine power plants with a combined capacity of 2,760 megawatts of power. The companies extracting natural gas are required to pay corporate income taxes. Read More …

JV defends Poe: Walang masama sa pagiging ampon

Senator Grace Poe offers flowers at the tomb of her father, Fernando Poe Jr., at the Manila North Cemetery on Sunday (Dec. 14, 2014), the 10th death anniversary of the acknowledged Filipino movie king. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito defended Sen. Grace Poe amid questions about her citizenship, saying there is nothing wrong with being a foundling and being adopted. In his speech at today’s Independence Day celebration in San Juan, Ejercito said he is against the allegation even though it came from a party-mate and friend. He asked Poe to forgive those behind the allegation. Ejercito, son of former president Joseph Estrada, assured Poe of his support should she decide to seek higher office in 2016. Poe was the guest speaker at the city’s celebration of independence. “Kung mangyayari lang naisin niya ang paglahok sa pambansang halalan sa isang taon, nais kong ipabatod sa inyo na dahil sa prinsipyo at panindigan na ating nakita sa pagsasama sa Senado, ako po ay inyong maaasahan. Secret lang. Nagkakaintindan na tayo, kapatid,” Ejercito said. Read More …

Ambassadors of Co-Creation

Corazon P. Guidote There are a lot of good reasons why I am very hopeful about the Philippines. Much has to do about our youth and how many of them are fighting hard to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Not too long ago, I attended SM Foundation’s annual presentation of college graduates from its scholarship program. The event is attended by their benefactors, the Sy family, the SM group and other co-sponsors. Always an emotionally charged event, more than 260 graduates went to SMX Convention Center with their parents, all of them joyful and proud. This year saw a record number of graduates, which again yielded a high percentage of honor students, 23% of total or 62 graduates to be exact. Two were summa cum laude, 21 were magna cum laude, 29 were cum laude, and 10 with academic distinction. And of those who have so far taken their board exams, four ranked among the topnotchers. One ranked 3rd in civil engineering, and three ranked 3rd, 6th and 8th in electrical engineering. Such good news, excitement could not be contained even among the officers and employees of the Foundation. Ever since I joined SM nine years ago, I had been attending this event. Each year, I go home hopeful and inspired. These graduates are not ordinary students. All from public high schools, they are among the brightest but from some of the poorest families nationwide. What makes them special is their ability to excel amidst extreme challenges. Read More …
