(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The leader of youth activist group Anakbayan slammed President Benigno Aquino III for his response to allegations that military and paramilitary groups are killing indigenous peoples in Mindanao. Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of Anakbayan, said the President engaged in “classic doublespeak” when he responded to queries regarding the killings of Lumad people in Mindanao. “Aquino’s statement is classic doublespeak which emboldens the paramilitary and military in its campaign targeting civilians. It reveals Aquino’s complicity in the militarization of communities and the murder of Lumads and activists under his military Oplan Bayanihan. Blood is clearly on Aquino’s hands,” Crisostomo said in a statement. During a roundtable discussion with journalists and editors of Philippine Daily Inquirer, President Aquino said it is not the policy of his government to kill innocent lumads, following allegations that the military and paramilitary groups were involved in the killing of 3 indigenous people. “There is no campaign to kill anybody in this country. There is a campaign to go after everybody who commits crimes, regardless of who they are,” Aquino told Inquirer editor and journalists during round table discussion. “Serving the people does not entail killing any of our citizens.” For Crisostomo, the President’s response “revealed Read More …

VP Binay camp shrugs off Bondal’s latest plunder complaint

Vice President Jejomar Binay speaks to senior citizens in Amapola St., Barangay Pembo, Makati, Thursday. The city government of Makati has been under public scrutiny amid new allegations of having “ghost” senior citizens who reportedly receive benefits. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay on Wednesday said the latest plunder complaint filed by lawyer Renato Bondal was “just another nuisance suit” paid for by his critics. In a statement, Binay’s spokesperson for political affairs lawyer Rico Quicho said the vice president had no transactions with Meriras Realty Development Corporation over the alleged illegal use of a property in Makati City. Bondal, one of the witnesses testifying before the Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee on the corruption allegations against Binay, claimed Binay used Meriras to hide the ownership of the property. Meriras is a combination of the surnames “Mercado” and “Irasga” of former Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado and former Makati City Engineer Nelson Irasga. Mercado used to be a close ally of Binay during the latter’s term as city mayor of Makati. “We all know that Bondal and Mercado are the indefatigable sources of trumped up charges against the Vice President. This is but another charge that has been bought and paid for,” said Quicho. Contrary to Bondal’s claims, Quicho said the Office of the Ombudsman and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) declared the acquisition of the Meriras lot valid and legal more than a decade ago. “Clearly, Mr. Bondal is merely fabricating this Read More …

Dennis Trillo gets biggest talent fee for Felix Manalo biopic

Dennis Trillo (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) -– Dennis Trillo admitted that he received his highest talent fee to date for the biopic of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) leader Felix Manalo. The actor said this was the reason he meticulously prepared for his role in the upcoming movie “Felix Manalo, Ang Talambuhay ng Sugo ng Iglesia ni Cristo.” “Sa preparasyon, marami po kaming pinagdaanan. Nag-immersion po kami, kinausap po kami ng mga ministro, ni-lecture-an po, backgrounder, binigyan po kami ng mga babasahin and siyempre po, pinag-aralan namin ‘yung script,” Trillo said. Trillo said he also did his personal homework to learn more about his character. “Maaga pa lang, noong nalaman ko po na ako po ang gaganap, nag-research na ako sa YouTube. Tinignan ko kung may mga videos ba para makita ko ’yung hitsura niya, kung paano siya nagsasalita, ’yung pamamaraan ng tono ng pananalita niya,” he said. Trillo admitted that the among the biggest challenges in portraying Manalo is that he had to memorize long lines. “Mahahaba talaga ‘yung linya. Kailangang mag-memorize ng maraming pages sa script. Mabuti naman, kahit papaano nakayanan ko. Ang mahirap pa po doon, ‘yung pagiging Ka Felix Manalo mismo dahil isa siyang napakaimpluwensiyang tao,” he said. It took them two months to finish the whole movie. Contrary to the original plan, Trillo was also the one who played the old Manalo, which was originally offered to Albert Martinez. “May separate contract naman po kaya okay lang,” he said. “Medyo mahirap lang yung matandang Ka Felix Read More …
