BEFORE Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. became the e-commerce giant that it is today, it was a small business with founders who knew very little about the Internet.

(AP Photo/Susan Walsh) The self-made Chinese billionaire who built Alibaba—China’s e-commerce giant whose sales now nearly match that of US retailing giant Walmart—yesterday called on a high-powered audience at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) CEO Summit to help the small guys left behind by globalization. Jack Ma is the single most anticipated corporate speaker at the Apec CEO Summit and his rags-to-riches journey has captured the global limelight especially after a landmark $21.8-billion stock debut in New York last year. His company is now valued by the market at $198 billion, surpassing Walmart’s $185-billion market capitalization although still lagging the $300-billion valuation of rival Amazon. When he built Alibaba with the help of 17 colleagues 16 years ago, Ma had told his team about his vision of how the Internet could change things. “I said one thing: If we can be successful, 80 percent of the Chinese people can be successful because we are the people without resources, we are the people without money, we are the people without relationship and we are the people without even knowing the technology.” “We have to make sure Internet is simple enough (so) that people can just downclick and get what they want,” he said, noting that Alibaba Read More …
Lani Misalucha (MNS Photo) Acclaimed singer Lani Misalucha insists that she is ready to retire anytime and that, if it were all up to her, she would rather just cross-stitch. But veteran concert performer was quick to add that if there are people who still want to listen to her music, she will continue to entertain audiences. “Kung pwede ngang mag-stop na, bakit hindi?” Misalucha told reporters at a press conference for her upcoming two-night concert on December 4 and 5 at The Theatre at Solaire with special guest Arnel Pineda. She said one of the reasons she decided to move to the United States was to start anew. “To begin with hindi ko akalain na magsi-singer ako, ‘di ko pinursue ang pagiging singer. Nagpapasalamat ako na dumating sa buhay ko ‘yon na hindi ko ini-expect,” she explained. “Since na-experience ko na dito sa Pilipinas ang maging recording artist, concert performer at saka TV host, na experience ko na ganito pala ang buhay, sabi okay na. Gusto ko na magiba na ulit, start from zero kaya nagpunta kami ng Amerika.” But she quickly realized that being an entertainment is not that easy to give up. “No matter what na pag-alis, sumusunod na pa din ;yung klaseng buhay na pag-awit, pag-perform at pag-entertain sa maraming tao. Since madami pa ding gustong makinig at makita ako na mag-perform eh ganoon ang gagawin ko,” she said. Thus Misalucha was able to establish a name for herself as a sought-after Las Vegas lounge singer. Read More …
