Keep dreaming lady

Embattled presidential candidate Grace Poe Llamanzares is not about ready to give up her lofty ambition to become the next president despite glaring evidence that she is not qualified to run in the 2016 national elections based on her questionable citizenship and residency requirements. Senator Poe Llamanzares has a remarkable trait as a persistent candidate despite overwhelming odds against her in the pursuit of her presidential quest. Even after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc’s recent decision upholding two earlier rulings on Poe’s disqualification cases, the neophyte lady solon is still refusing to give up her presidential dream. And why not? There are rumors that she is now apparently getting support from Malacañang. Reliable sources have said that Malacanang had a hand in the recent issuance of a temporary restraining order lby Supreme Court Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno against Comelec on her disqualification case. With the TRO, Comelec is barred from effecting its disqualification ruling on Poe Llamanzares and from removing her name from the list of presidential candidates. There are also rumors circulating that Poe Llamanzares is actually the preferred presidential candidate of President Aquino. The anointed one – Mar Roxas – is still way behind the other presidential candidates in all surveys. Sen. Poe Llamanzares and her sycophant political allies and supporters are still dreaming that  with the “behind-the-scene” backing of President Aquino, the neophyte Senator will be able to hurdle all her current legal problems concerning her citizenship and  residency requirement issues. However, her chances of Read More …

How marriage changed Mariel, Toni, Bianca

Mariel Rodriguez, Toni Gonzaga, and Bianca Gonzalez (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Television hosts Mariel Rodriguez, Toni Gonzaga, and Bianca Gonzalez opened up about their respective marriages. The three, who were all alumnae and hosts of the reality television show “Pinoy Big Brother,” were quizzed about how being married changed them in a television interview. The 31-year-old Rodriguez, who has been married to actor Robin Padilla for more than five years to date, answered: “Feeling ko I’m still the same but better.” For her part, Gonzaga, who tied the knot with husband Paul Soriano earlier in 2015, said: “Ako sa akin, kasi six months na kaming married so nandoon pa ako sa process ng transitioning.” She explained: “Mahirap ‘yung stage ng transitioning –separation from family, Alex, everything. So nandoon pa ako sa stage na iyon but it is a good stage that I know I’ll be able to overcome. That’s why my plan this year is to be the best wife.” Meanwhile, Gonzalez shared that her marriage with basketball player JC Intal has taught her to take things slowly, especially since the couple recently welcomed their first child, Lucia Martine. “Ang pinakabago is natutunan ko na okay lang mag-slow down. Kasi dati nung single, go lang ng go, work lang ng work. Nung kinasal, parang okay din pala na mas magpahinga ng unti, i-prioritize ang family,” she said. (MNS)

Poe urges Bautista to probe ‘personalities’ after Comelec infighting

Senator Grace Poe (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – Sen. Grace Poe on Saturday urged Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Andres Bautista to launch an investigation on “personalities” within the poll body who are allegedly trying to sabotage her chances of joining the 2016 presidential race. Poe’s camp made the call in light of the reported infighting between Bautista and Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon over the latter’s filing of a comment with the Supreme Court on the Poe cases without the chairman’s signature. In a statement, Poe’s spokesman Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian blasted Guanzon for her actions. “We believe that the actions of Commissioner Guanzon is wrong, as she is usurping the powers reserved for the en banc,” he said. “The actions of Commissioner Guanzon is undermining our electoral process and endangering our very democracy,” added Poe’s spokesman. Gatchalian said Guanzon’s actions only bolstered the senator’s suspicion that there are people within Comelec trying to derail her presidential bid. “From day 1 we have been saying that certain personalities inside Comelec have political agendas against Sen. Poe. These personalities have been driven by political and partisan biases against Sen. Poe,” he said. “We are calling on Chairman Bautista to investigate these personalities inside the commission that should be impartial. Chairman Bautista should unmask these personalities and make them publicly accountable,” the lawyer added. “It’s alarming to see that the very institution tasked to oversee the conduct of orderly elections in disarray. We are calling on the good Chairman of Comelec to Read More …

Chiz urges MRT chief Vitangcol to tell all

— Members of Akbayan Youth troop to the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) at the GMA-Kamuning station in Quezon City on Wednesday wearing safety gear such as helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads to dramatize the dangers posed by riding the poorly maintained MRT 3, which is plagued with problems.(MNS photo) Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero is urging former Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) general manager Al Vitangcol to reveal the details of the $1.5-million contract awarded for the commuter train’s maintenance in October 2012, which became the basis of the graft case filed against him. Barely a month after the Sandiganbayan affirmed his indictment for graft, Vitangcol broke his silence last Wednesday to lament what he regarded as apparent haste in resolving the case against him.  He insisted it was actually the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) that awarded the contract. It was earlier reported that the controversial MRT maintenance deal with Philippine Trams Rail Management Service Corp. (PH Trams) was “perfected” at a time when the DOTC was headed by Liberal Party presidential candidate Mar Roxas. The Office of the Ombudsman had also cleared incumbent DOTC chief Joseph Emilio Abaya of any liability in connection with the deal because he was appointed just two days earlier when he signed the contract. Escudero said the former MRT chief should reveal the “extent of the culpability of other DOTC officials in the anomalous contract that they have left Vitangcol high and dry to claim responsibility for deal.” “Mr. Vitangcol should not Read More …

Tagle on devotion to Black Nazarene: It’s more than the pulling and pushing

Despite slight rains, devotees line up patiently to kiss the revered Image of the Black Nazarene at the Quiapo Church on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1, 2016). (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – The message of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle centered on faith and devotion of Filipinos to the Black Nazarene. Tagle presided over the midnight Mass held at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, Manila, hours before the annual procession of the Black Nazarene. The prelate reminded the thousands of devotees present that even if they are unable to visit the image of the Black Nazarene everyday, their devotion is alive with the celebration of the Mass. Tagle emphasized that devotion to the Nazarene is more than all the pushing and pulling, or squeezing one’s self into throngs of other devotees crowding the path of the Christ’s black image. “Para doon sa iba na ang akala ang mga deboto ay nagtutulakan lamang. Hindi po. Naranasan niyo na ba na wala kayong makapitan? Kapag naranasan niyo iyan, nandiyan ang Nazareno, lumapit ka, kumapit ka, mauunawaan mo bakit ganyan na lang ang kagustuhan ng mga deboto makalapit sa kanya,” said Tagle. Tagle said that devotion to the Black Nazarene does not only involve being thankful but also offering sacrifices to God, even as he cited devotees who waited seven hours in line along Roxas Boulevard just to get close to the Nazarene for three seconds. Tagle also spoke of stories from people who no longer were able to join the procession Read More …

Hyundai aims to ‘set benchmark for luxury’ with Genesis brand

The 2017 Genesis G90 on display at the 2016 NAIAS©Newspress (Detroit–AFP) – Hyundai is reaching for the top in launching a new luxury brand, Genesis, which aims to replicate the success of Japanese rivals while redefining the customer experience. The Korean automaker unveiled its flagship sedan, the G90, at the Detroit auto show Monday that was designed to compete with the top offerings of storied brands like Mercedes and BMW by offering best-in-class performance and features. “We are applying ourselves to entirely new objectives to set the benchmark for luxury,” Hyundai vice chair Eui Sun Chung said at the brand’s US launch. “With Genesis we will strive to meet the desire of a new generation of luxury customer… (who) value unique experiences over mere status.” The bold move comes after years of studious planning and work to improve Hyundai’s reputation following a disastrous initial entree into the US market in 1986 with the poorly-built Excel. Hyundai addressed its reputation for poor quality by vigorously improving its production standards and introducing a 10-year warranty program in 1999. It launched its first luxury sedan — the Genesis — shortly before US car sales collapsed to the lows not seen in decades in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Hyundai managed to expand market share during the downturn through clever marketing that included a promise to buy back a customer’s car if they lost their job within the first year of purchase. It also won accolades for the Genesis, including the much-coveted Read More …

Father’s diet can influence health and weight of offspring according to two new studies

Two independent studies by teams in China and North America have found evidence to suggest that a father’s diet can influence the health and weight of his children. ©Chinaview/shutterstock.Com (Relaxnews) – Two independent studies by teams in China and North America have found evidence to suggest that a father’s diet can influence the health and weight of his offspring. Published in the journal Science, both studies looked at the effects of different diets of male mice on their offspring. The first study, by a group of researchers in China, took sperm from two groups of mice, one receiving a high-fat diet and one receiving a normal, healthier diet, and used it to impregnate female mice. Once the offspring were born, the team monitored their weight, level of glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. The results showed that although the offspring of the males who were fed the high-fat diets did not gain more weight than the offspring fed the normal, healthier diet, they did show a decreased resistance to insulin and a glucose intolerance, both factors in the development of diabetes. In the second study, researchers from the U.S. and Canada instead fed mice a low-protein diet and compared the results to a control group. In their study, the team found changes to a group of genes responsible for the development of stem cells, which in early life can develop into many different types of cells within the body, as well as repair and replace body tissue; however, no other changes were found. The results go against Read More …
