BuCor chief claims clipping powers of Bilibid drug lords

Members of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) destroy P9.23-million worth of seized chemicals and laboratory equipment used for manufacturing methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) in Valenzuela City, Tuesday.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) welcomed Wednesday the plan of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s administration to deploy elite policemen of the Special Action Forces (SAF) to the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP). BuCor Director General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III admitted that after 35 raids since Oplan Galugad was launched in 2015, authorities still confiscate various contraband items from NBP inmates. He said additional manpower is needed to stamp out the continuing gun running and illegal drug trade inside the country’s largest prison facility. “Maganda po iyun. Kailangan po talaga natin ng karagdagang manpower para maparami po talaga iyung guwardya, para mabantayan po talaga ng maayos ang Bilibid,” Cruz said. At the same time, Cruz claimed that despite the persistent illegal activities at the NBP, authorities were able to cut down the influence of detained drug lords who had overseen the reported manufacture of drugs inside Bilibid. “Iyung dating powers nila na makapagbenta ng marami, hindi na ganoon. Namo-monitor na rin kasi ng ibang agencies iyung galaw ng drugs ngayon,” he said. Incoming Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said that he has secured the help of incoming Philippine National Police chief Ronald dela Rosa who promised to detail 1,000 SAF troopers at the NBP. Sotto said he and Senator Gringo Honasan earlier met with Cayetano, who at that time had the support of four senators. “Pero noong mag-usap kami meron na kaagad syang sinasabi na position na dapat si ganito si ganyan, at meron din syang sinasabi na itong position na ito hindi pwede kay ganyan, hindi pwede kay ganun. Without naming names, ganun yung dating nya,” he said. “When I went back to the group to tell them about what we talked about, they were not excited about it, they were not happy about that kind of situation so we decided to explore other possibilities, invite other members of the incoming Senate to join the group of nine and were able to invite Koko Pimentel.” He was referring to Senator Aqulino “Koko” Pimentel III, who got the support of at least 14 senators to be the next Senate President in the 17th Congress. “Koko came to join us in Read More …

DepEd sees high turnout of Grade 11 enrollees

By Filane Mikee Z. Cervantes MANILA  (PNA) – The implementation of Senior High School (SHS) program sees a historic turnout of enrollees in Grade 11 with less than the usual 50 percent fallout rate, the secretary of Department of Education (DepEd) said. “Definitely, ang enrollees natin sa Grade 11 will be much, much more than half of the historical numbers that we were seeing when we had fourth year high school,” said Education chief Armin Luistro in a press conference on Monday. “For the first time in history we have a national database of enrolled Grade 11 students both public and private,” he added. As of Monday, the DepEd national server has received over 600,000 enrollment lists from more than half of the 11,000 schools offering SHS. Most of the schools that were not yet able to encode enrollment data are public schools located in remote areas and private schools that will begin the school year in July or August. However, Luistro said there are at least 1.1 million Grade 11 students already enrolled in various schools offering SHS nationwide. According to the Education chief, an estimated 700,000 to 800,000 Grade 11 students are enrolled in public schools, while 300,000-400,000 students will pursue senior high in private schools, state universities and colleges (SUCs), and local universities and colleges (LUCs), and technical-vocational institutions. The number of dropouts, on the other hand, is ranging from 200,000-400,000, which is significantly lower than the 50 percent dropout rate which was recorded in the previous Read More …

I could have contested it but since the President-elect has the mandate, so we recognize that mandate. Koko Pimentel is the only PDP-Laban (Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan), senator. There’s no one else,” Drilon said. Pimentel is president of PDP-Laban which is now being chaired by President-elect Rodrigo Duterte. “Ah yes, no rancor, no rancor. I didn’t aspire for it,” Drilon said when asked why he was giving up, with open arms, the Senate leadership to Pimentel. “All that I said was I have to provide stability to the Senate by not contesting it anymore because I have a group of eight. I have six LP (Liberal Party) [senators] supporting me and two allied parties but I said let’s provide stability as early as possible so that on July 25 we hit the ground running because there are a lot of things to do and wrangling for Read More …
