Until recently, 29 year-old Merry Rose De Vera was homeless, living on the street, and making ends meet by going through people’s trash. De Vera, who eloped with her boyfriend when she was only 19, lived in along the South Pier in Manila, where she became a mother of three children. Because of their horrible living conditions, her kids grew up sickly and weak, and were constantly in and out of government hospitals because of pneumonia. “Ang buhay po sa kalsada sobrang hirap. Naranasan ko na kumain ng galing sa basurahan… Hindi kami halos makaligo ng isang linggo. Ang hirap po talaga tapos kapag umuulan, hindi mo alam kung saan ka tatakbo para makasilong kasi mababasa ka talaga. “’Yung mga anak ko nga halos laman ng ospital ‘yun e… laging polmunya ang sakit,” she told ABS-CBN News. After suffering through domestic abuse from the father of her children, Merry Rose decided to find away to achieve gainful employment that would provide her children a better life. The answer to her prayers came from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), who suggested that she should attend the free livelihood training offered by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in Sampaloc Manila. “Inalok po ako ng DSWD kasi po 4Ps [Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program] member po ako… Tinanong po nila ako kung gusto ko daw po mag-aral ng TESDA [Technical Education and Skills Development Authority] para magkaroon ng trabaho. Sabi ko ‘susubukan ko po,” she says. Merry Rose Read More …

18 Benefits of Having and Being a Mentor

Armando Bartolome You may be familiar with the popular book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” written by Robert Kiyosaki. I often cite this book as an example of how people have differing views about life. Parents always remind their kids about the value of education. For sure, when we don’t take education seriously, we lose much from life. But success in any business is a combination of many factors. One of the keys to success is learning more and more about your business. Not everything is learned in school and learning does not stop when you step out of the classroom. The wealth of experience of certain individuals is a good source of wisdom for entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs alike. What is a mentor? A mentor is a professional who shares knowledge and advice and helps a business grow. The relationship benefits entrepreneurs, employees and the mentor in many ways. My years of being in the business has allowed me to help many who, I am proud to say, have established well-known brands in the Philippines. This is the reason why I love what I do. A mentor acts as a guide and provides valuable information that can help an entrepreneur manage his business better. Here are some of the things a mentor does: Educates the mentee on how to accept feedback in important areas, such as communications, technical abilities, change management, and leadership skills Helps the mentee better understand the organization’s culture and unspoken rules, both of which can be Read More …

Lacson sees signs of ‘cover-up’ in Atio Castillo’s hazing case

The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, chaired by Senator Dick Gordon, conducts a hearing on the P6.4 Billion worth of shabu shipment from China, on the possible malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance of the Bureau of Customs officials and employees.(MNS photo) MANILA, Sept 28 (Mabuhay) — Senator Panfilo Lacson on Wednesday said there is an “evident” attempt to conceal certain details in the death of hazing victim Horacio Castillo III. “Very evident ang cover-up. Malinaw yan. Kasi pagka frat may omerta yan, code of silence. Yan ang nagti-trigger ng cover-up,” Lacson told reporters. The 22-year-old University of Santo Tomas (UST) law student died of a massive heart attack after sustaining injuries allegedly during the initiation rites of the Aegis Juris Fraternity. Atio’s body was brought to the Chinese General Hospital (CGH) on September 18 with bruises and candle wax drippings. The Manila Police District (MPD) confirmed after an autopsy that Castillo had undergone hazing. It was later learned that John Paul Solano, the medical technologist who claimed to have found him and brought him to the hospital, was a member of the fraternity. He also admitted to issuing a false story that he found Castillo’s body by chance and brought it to CGH along Blumentritt Road upon orders from his frat brothers. The hazing supposedly took place at the Aegis Juris fraternity foundation office located on Laon-Laan-Navarra Street, which is less than a kilometer away from the UST campus that had its own hospital. “The mere fact napakaaga ang nangyari, tapos 9 Read More …

Hazing rites that killed Atio Castillo took place at Aegis Juris frat office

John Paul Solano, one of the primary suspects in the death of University of Sto. Tomas law student hazing victim Horacio Castillo III takes his oath during the Senate inquiry on Castillo’s death, Monday. Some senators are now pushing for a total ban on hazing.(MNS photo) MANILA, Sept 26 (Mabuhay) — Freshman law student Horacio Castillo III underwent hazing rites that cost his life at the office of the fraternity that recruited him, according to the Manila Police District (MPD). Excerpts of the complaint filed by the MPD before the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday against 18 individuals indicated that the initiation rites were held at the Aegis Juris Foundation Office on Laon-Laan and Navarra Streets near the University of Santo Tomas (UST). The complaint said the rites occurred between 12 midnight and 8 a.m. of September 17. Witnesses said they heard some “unusual noise” from people apparently having a drinking session inside the Aegis headquarters. Hours later, CCTV footage installed beside the Aegis Juris office showed that “a member was noticed hurriedly running towards the direction of the Aegis Juris office while another, [who] was observed busy using his cellular phone, appeared to be worried.” The police said that based on CCTV footage, John Paul Solano was part of the convoy that brought Castillo from the Aegis Juris Foundation office to the Chinese General Hospital. Solano earlier claimed he brought Castillo to the hospital after he saw the latter’s body on a sidewalk in Balut, Tondo. “John Paul Read More …

They may have yet to confirm that they’re dating, but “Pusong Ligaw” stars Diego Loyzaga and Sofia Andres are already being made to address some breakup talk. The two laughed off the latest tabloid news claiming that they’re not in good terms with one another. “Mga rumors lang naman iyon. Actually hanggang ngayon natatawa pa rin kami sa mga naririnig namin,” Loyzaga said. He added: “Paano malalaman ng ibang tao iyong mayroon sa aming dalawa eh kami lang naman ang magkakasama?” Loyzaga also denied going out on a date with another woman. “Hindi ako lumalabas kasi M-W-F ay nasa taping ako, same with Sofia. We’re taping and shooting the same movie so para mangyari iyon . . . so impossible.” he said. MANILA, Sept 28 (Mabuhay) — Taiwan on Wednesday asked the Philippine government to provide information and evidence on the alleged Taiwanese drug cartel referred to by President Rodrigo Duterte as the major supplier of illegal narcotics in the country. Taking note of Duterte’s statement, Taiwan’s representative to the Philippines Gary Song-Huann Lin said he has already “requested our related agencies in Taipei to look into and investigate this matter.” “We also urged the Philippines to provide information and evidence through mutual legal assistance mechanisms and channels, through these information and evidence,” Lin said in a statement. Lin said Taiwan was committed to strengthen its anti-drug cooperation with the Philippines. Taiwan has no formal diplomatic relations with the Philippines in deference to the One-China Policy, which prevents countries from recognizing the self-ruling democratic island as a state. It is represented in the Philippines by the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO). In his speech on Tuesday night at the 120th anniversary of the Department of Justice, Duterte blamed a so-called Taiwan-based 14K Bamboo triad for supplying illegal drugs into the country. Duterte made the claim even after Philippine authorities recently intercepted a P6.4-billion drug shipment from China to Manila early this year. The drug syndicate, according to Duterte, cooks methamphetamine in the high seas and uses the Philippines as a transshipment point. Lin denied that Taiwan is the source of drugs in the Philippines. “Taiwan do not export drugs to this country,” Lin said. The Taiwanese official cited data by the Read More …
