Aquino III appealed to Sultan Jamalul Kiram III of Sulu to recall his followers holed up in a portion of Lahad Datu town in the eastern province of Sabah, Malaysia in order to peacefully end the two-week standoff between Malaysian authorities and the Sulu Sultan who has been pressing his people’s claim to said land. The President aired his appeal in a press conference with the Malacanang Press Corps that was aired over government-run television and radio stations People’s Television (PTV-4) and dzRB Radyoo ng Bayan on Tuesday. “And so this is my appeal to you: These are your people, and it behooves you to recall them. Aquino III said that various reforms are already in place to effectively address all the issues and concerns of the water sector as part of the administration’s efforts to revitalize the country’s agriculture and energy sectors. In his speech during the ceremonial ground-breaking of the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project (JRMP) Stage II held at the Iloilo Provincial Building along Bonifacio Drive on Thursday, the Chief Executive assured that the government continues to implement various programs to achieve the government’s goal of rice self-sufficiency by year 2013. He said the JRMP project in Iloilo province will boost the country’s agriculture sector. “Oras na matapos ang proyekto, apatnapu’t tatlong porsyento ng lupang agraryo dito sa Iloilo ang magkakaroon ng irigasyon. Ibig-sabihin, inaasahan natin na dodoble ang maaaning bigas sa rehiyon, at aangat nang tatlumpung porsyento ang produksyon pati na ng tubo. AmCham backs revision of Foreign Investment Negative List

MANILA, Philippines – The American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AmCham) supports the government’s plan to review the Foreign Investment Negative List (FINL), citing that it is beneficial to update rules with the current environment. AmCham director Robert Sears said the group is backing the government’s plan to review the FINL. “It is always good to review outdated laws,” he said in a text message. Earlier this week, economic managers such as Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, National Economic and Development Authority director general Arsenio Balisacan and Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo agreed to undertake a review and hold consultations for the FINL. Purisima said the plan is to present the results of the review and consultations to President Aquino. Sears, however, noted that only items in the list would be examined and they would not be review lifting economic restrictions in the Constitution. Megaworld doubles budget for Mactan township proj

MANILA, Philippines – Property giant Megaworld Corp. has doubled its investment commitment for its first township project in Cebu to P20 billion.
