President Benigno Aquino III has picked Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Delgado to take over as commanding general of the Philippine Air Force as Lt. Gen. Lauro Catalino dela Cruz retires from the military.

Armed Forces of the Philippines public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, who made the announcement Thursday night, described Delgado as a professional soldier and “an experienced pilot, who flew [MD520s] and T-28 Trojans in close air support operations.”

Delgado will assume command at formal rites that President Aquino will preside over at the Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, Batangas on Friday.

Delgado is a member of the Philippine Military Acadeny Class of 1982 and was a member of the Presidential Security Group during the administration of President Corazon Aquino, the incumbent president’s mother.
 

He commanded the 15th Strike Wing from January to October 2012 and has been senior military assistant to President Aquino.
