LOS ANGELES – Filipino-American media groups here have banded together to honor the memory of the 32 journalists killed in the Ampatuan massacre, the worst single attack on the press. On Nov. 22, members of the media will hold a concert and photo exhibit at the Celebrity Centre International in Los Angeles. The event will feature Original Pilipino Music (OPM) icon Florante, local celebrity musicians and the newly formed Fil-Am Media Band. The concert, titled ABAKADA: Children Helping Children, will also highlight the youth band Back2Jupiter, who will dedicate their performances to the orphans of the slain journalists. “ABAKADA is the title of Florante’s popular song promoting the value of education,” said Benny Uy, public relations officer of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP)-US Chapter, producer of the show. “It’s also a fitting title because this project will help us support the education of the orphans of slain journalists.” The concert date – Nov.22 – which is Nov. 23 in Philippine time zone, marks the sixth year after the attack that claimed the lives of 58 people, 32 of them journalists, in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao province in Southern Philippines. None of the suspects have been convicted of the crime. International media groups, including the New York-based watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Read More …

APEC wary US-led trade pact could become ‘rich-economy club’

Except for a few security personnel and cleaners, Roxas Boulevard looks immaculate on both sides after being cordoned off from regular traffic and pedestrians on Monday. Police tightened security surrounding the main venues at the start of the Asia-Pacific Economic Conference Summit this week.(MNS photo) Manila, Philippines | AFP |  – APEC does not want to see a United States-led free-trade agreement become a “rich-economy club”, a senior forum official said Monday. Speaking ahead of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the Philippine capital Manila, Alan Bollard, executive director of the APEC secretariat, said the organization’s 21 members had already entered into a “noodle bowl” of about 150 trade agreements and the TTP needed to be compatible with those deals. The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) would be the world’s largest, grouping the US with 11 other APEC member countries including Japan, Australia, and Canada. “APEC… has not been involved formally in TPP but of course we’ve observed progress and of course we’ll all be pleased to see the text out in the public arena now so that we can judge that,” Bollard told a news conference. “And I think it’s fair to say that APEC doesn’t want to see different trade agreements going off in different directions, wouldn’t want to see TPP as a rich economy club going off like that.” The terms of the TPP, which also includes Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam, were released earlier this month. Chiz: Who’s really in charge of airport security?

Presidential candidate Grace Poe, her running mate Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero, and veteran lawyer Lorna Kapunan (extreme left), acknowledge crowd after the tandem endorse Kapunan’s senatorial bid on Friday (Oct. 23) at the Balay Kalinaw in UP-Diliman, Quezon City. (MNS photo) With fingers pointing in different directions at the Senate inquiry into the “tanim-bala” extortion racket in airports, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero wants the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to clarify their exact roles in airport security. The senator made the call as some 9,000 APEC delegates and members of foreign media descend on Manila for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit this week. “The government is spending some P10 billion to host this major trade meeting and project the strength of the Philippine economy – we can’t possibly let a few bullets finding their way into random bags ruin the good image we’re building here,” said Escudero, an independent vice-presidential candidate and frontrunner in surveys. He said the country cannot afford to be lax amid terror threats in other parts of the world, citing what appeared to be coordinated attacks on different venues in Paris last week that killed at least 129 people. “The MIAA and OTS should know by this time what each agency’s role is in airport security, so that we know who to look for when problems arise,” he said. Escudero wants the OTS, in particular, to explain a recent memorandum it issued that effectively creates an “airport security organization in Read More …

PNP: Stay home, spare yourself from traffic

MMDA personnel work double time to repaint the exterior walls of the MRT near Boni Avenue Station on Sunday. The refurbishing is all part of the preparations for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit this week with 21 leaders of the member-economies and their delegations expected.(MNS photo) MANILA, Nov 16 (Mabuhay) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday reiterated its advice to the public to stay at home and spare themselves from traffic woes caused by the road closures for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit this week. “We advise them to stay home and spare themselves the trouble of being caught in heavy traffic, or adding to the road congestion in the next four days,” Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor, spokesperson of the PNP and 2015 APEC Security Task Force, said in a press statement. He said the public advisory to avoid unnecessary road travel within the city is meant to decongest thoroughfares affected by road closures that will be implemented during the APEC week. On Monday morning, commuters from Cavite endured a long walk along Coastal Road with the closure of Roxas Boulevard. Some commuters even have to walk a stretch of about 10 kilometers to the Light Rail Transit’s EDSA-Taft Station while others opted to just return home. Aside from Roxas Boulevard, roads leading to the Philippine International Convention Center, where the summit will be held, were also closed while authorities will stop traffic whenever the convoy of economic leaders are passing. Mayor, meanwhile, clarified that the PNP has Read More …

Why Daniel Padilla is endorsing Mar

Daniel Padilla (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — “Yes, I am.” These were the words of “Pangako Sa ‘Yo” star Daniel Padilla when asked to confirm if he is throwing his support behind the 2016 presidential bid of Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas. The 20-year-old Padilla said he has every right as a registered voter to pick a candidate for the upcoming elections. “Dahil choice ko iyon at kung nagparehistro kayo, may choice din kayo,” he said. The actor, considered to be one of the most popular among the Filipino youth, surprised many when he posted a video of him on his Twitter account interviewing Roxas. Titled “Traffic Episode,” the clip has Padilla questioning the former interior secretary about pressing issues such as the worsening metro traffic. In response, Roxas claimed that one of the government’s solution to decongest EDSA is already on its way in the form of the NLEX-SLEX connector. “Ginagawa na iyan at magpapatuloy ang pagtratrabaho niyan, at siguro sa mga susunod na taon ay kumpleto na iyan,” he said. Roxas added that the government will also implement a change in the system of granting franchises to public utility buses. He claimed: “Iyan ang sistema na ipapatupad natin para gumanda nga ang daloy ng trapiko.” In another video, Padilla was joined by her mother, veteran actress Karla Estrada. The two, who hail from Tacloban, asked Roxas about the criticisms that hounded the government’s early rescue efforts in the aftermath of supertyphoon Yolanda. Roxas noted that Secretary of National Read More …

High winds disrupt power throughout Southern California

High winds sweeping down from the north caused power outages Monday in communities across Southern California. High winds sweeping down from the north caused power outages Monday in communities across Southern California. As if 1:30 p.m., Southern California Edison was managing about 500 storm-related incidents with more than 5,400 customers affected by the wind. SCE work crews have begun restoring electric service to customers without power as a result of the high winds. Areas impacted in SCE’s service territory include Huntington Beach, Compton, Whittier, Seal Beach, Valencia, Montebello, Monrovia, Antelope Valley and Tehachapi. Safety is SCE’s No. 1 priority for its customers and employees. If you see a downed line or dangling wire – even if it appears not to be live – don’t touch or approach it and call 911 immediately. Here are some tips for dealing with weather-related outages: If you know someone who is dependent on electrically operated medical equipment, make backup power arrangements in case a power outage affects that equipment. Watch for traffic signals that may be out. Approach those intersections as four-way stops. Make sure you have a battery-operated radio and flashlights. Check the batteries to make sure they are fresh. Use flashlights for lighting during a power outage; do not use candles because they pose a significant fire hazard. Do not use equipment indoors that is designed for outdoor cooking. Such equipment can emit carbon monoxide and other toxic gases. Leave the doors of your refrigerator and freezer closed to keep your food as fresh as possible. Place blocks of Read More …

What to look forward to at the 2015 LA Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz SL teaser imageThe new premium sports coupé is one of 30 cars making their global debut at this year’s event.©Daimler AG (Relaxnews) – From supercars to SUVs, in all some 50 new vehicles are scheduled to make an appearance at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. For some, like the Jaguar F-Pace,  the show will mark a first glimpse on US shores, but for 30 of that number, including the Ferrari F12tdf, LA will be the venue for the car’s first-ever appearance anywhere in the world. But despite its brand appeal, Ferrari will have to fight for attention. Porsche will be bringing a racetrack-ready version of its Cayman, the GT4 Clubsport, to this year’s show and Lamborghini is prepping a new, more dynamic version of its Huracan supercar. For those who want supercar performance with extra comfort and elegance, Mercedes will be unveiling its latest generation SL coupé complete, as always with folding hard top, and although it’s yet to confirm or deny rumors, McLaren could be showing off its 570S Spider too. SUVs and crossovers are also going to be huge draws at this year’s event, especially as the West Coast is the unofficial world capital of the offroader. Range Rover is bringing its Evoque convertible — the world’s first premium compact SUV drop top. It will be doing battle, so to speak, with the Cadillac XT5, a new crossover that proves US carmakers can do luxury as well as any European brand, while Infiniti will be taking Read More …

US hospital to offer uterus transplants

The Cleveland Clinic said it will be the first hospital in the United States to offer transplanted uteruses to 10 women beginning in the next few months.©beerkoff/shutterstock.com (Miami–AFP) – A leading US hospital said Thursday it is preparing to offer women uterine transplants, a technology that has been proven in Sweden and could help those struggling with infertility. The Cleveland Clinic said it will be the first hospital in the United States to offer transplanted uteruses to 10 women beginning in the next few months. The clinical trial is open to women of childbearing age who are unable to become pregnant “because they were born without a uterus, have lost their uterus, or have a uterus that no longer functions,” said a hospital statement. The transplants will come from deceased donors and will be temporary. Each organ will removed after the recipient is able to bear one or two children. Sweden’s University of Gothenburg achieved its first birth via a transplanted uterus in September 2014. “To date, the Swedish group has performed nine uterus transplants, achieving five pregnancies and four live births,” the Cleveland Clinic said. The road has been long, however, and the first two international attempts at uterus transplants in Saudi Arabia and Turkey were unsuccessful. Organ rejection during pregnancy has been a key problem. “The exciting work from the investigators in Sweden demonstrated that uterine transplantation can result in the successful delivery of healthy infants,” said Cleveland Clinic lead investigator Andreas Tzakis. The approach “is still considered Read More …
