When bullied, call Uncle Sam

President Benigno S. Aquino and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP should take a more assertive action to defend our country’s sovereignty in the ongoing feud between the Philippines and China over the disputed islands in the South China Sea. China has recently stepped up its actions to press its maritime claims by sending more military vessels within the disputed areas. President Aquino, on the other hand, apparently is doing the opposite. Aside from doing nothing in terms of negotiation with China, he ordered all Philippine navy vessels in the disputed areas to pull back on the pretext  that the ships were threatened constantly by typhoons. It is known to all our neighboring Asian countries that we are not capable of defending the disputed areas in the South China Sea. Most of our weapons are outmoded and our military aircraft and vessels donated by the United States, are either obsolete or second-hand. In 2012, a bloody confrontation between the Philippine Coast Guard  and Chinese coast guard almost erupted. Our coast guard tried to apprehend Chinese poachers in the Scarborough Shoal, about 124 nautical miles from Manila. They however were prevented by heavily armed Chinese Coast Guard from arresting the poachers. It must have been hard for our maritime security sailors to “turn their cheek the other way” to avoid bloodshed knowing that they were both outgunned and outmanned. But what is hard to swallow was an insulting story which came out recently from a Chinese newspaper which described the Read More …

DFA grants family’s request to visit Mary Jane Veloso in Indonesia

Migrant rights activists raise march with banners and placards in Manila on Tuesday urging the Philippine government to save Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino migrant facing execution in Indonesia for drug charges. Indonesia’s Supreme Court upheld its ruling and ordered her execution.(MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has granted the request of the family of Mary Jane Veloso, the Filipina facing execution in Indonesia for drug smuggling, to visit her there. “At the initiative of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario, arrangements have been made by the Department of Foreign Affairs to accommodate the request of Mary Jane Veloso for her family to visit her in Indonesia,” the DFA said in a brief news release Wednesday. “Any delay in their trip is brought about by personal engagements of the family,” it added. Veloso’s father Ceasar, accompanied by lawyers, left for Indonesia on Tuesday to appeal for her freedom. It was his third time to meet his daughter since her arrest and incarceration in 2010. Prior to that, on April 17, Veloso’s sister Marites went to Indonesia bearing a notebook containing messages from their parents and Veloso’s children. President Benigno Aquino III earlier this week sought for Veloso’s clemency before the Indonesian government – his third attempt to save the Filipino convict’s life. Aquino sent his first letter in 2011 to then-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the second to President Joko Widodo for a judicial review. Chiz to announce 2016 plans in October

Senator Chiz Escudero, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, delivers a privilege speech on the 2014 General Appropriations Bill, Tuesday morning. According to Escudero, the 2014 budget proposal, which includes funds for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction programs and projects in the amount of P70 billion, will also include specific funding for the rehabilitation of the Visayas on top of the existing calamity fund to be sourced from items which can be postponed in the 2014 national budget. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Lack of resources is one of the reasons why Senator Francis Escudero is still undecided in running for a higher post in the 2016 elections. During a weekly forum at the Senate on Wednesday, Escudero said he will most likely announce his decision at the last day of the filing of certificate of candidacy in October. (MNS)

Ex-poll chief urges Comelec not to appeal SC ruling on PCOS repair deal

(Photo from left) Commission on Election (Comelec) Commissioner Arthur D. Lim, Comelec Executive Director Jose M. Tolentino Jr., and Smartmatic Program Manager Marlon Garcia, discuss the condition of some 82,000 Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines (right) during the poll body’s “Walk Through” on Friday (March 20, 2015), held at the production area in Comelec Warehouse, Park Drive, Light Industrial Science Park 1, Barangay Diezmo, Cabuyao, Laguna. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Instead of appealing the decision of the Supreme Court, former elections chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. on Wednesday urged the poll body to look for another company that will repair the 81,000 Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines that will be used in the 2016 polls. “I think the commission now should look for an alternative immediately instead of filing a motion for reconsideration,” Brillantes said. The SC on Tuesday voided the P300-million diagnostics and repair agreement between the Commission on Elections and Smartmatic-TIM, after it was questioned by the Automated Elections System and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. In voiding the contract, the Supreme Court noted that the Comelec “failed to justify its resort to direct contracting,” according to court spokesman Theodore Te. Brillantes, who signed the agreement before he retired in February, said the Comelec can opt for alternative bidding or get a copy of the SC decision to check if the it gave any recommendation on how the poll body should proceed with the repair. “Kailangang i-repair talaga yung mga PCOS machines. Pwedeng pumunta sa alternative Read More …

Tesla posts record sales as demand for premium electric cars heats up

“China is the only place on Earth that we have excess inventory,” says Elon Musk, blaming “speculators” for ordering cars amid the early media hype and then not taking delivery. (Relaxnews) – Tesla on Friday reported record quarterly sales of its premium electric car, the Model S. But it’s by no means the only company carving out a bigger share of the electric car market by targeting affluent drivers. Tesla is on a roll. Its electric cars may well come with a premium price ticket and a restricted range, when compared to its gas-powered rivals in the executive sedan segment, but on Friday it reported it has delivered 10,030 cars during Q1 of the year, which is not only a record for the company, it is a 55% increase over 2014’s Q1 figures. And unlike a lot of companies trying to break into the electric vehicle market and tempt car buyers away from fossil fuels, Tesla only has one model – the Model S in its range. The Nissan Renault Alliance is currently the global leader in cumulative EV sales — 200,000 vehicles and counting. Those numbers, however, are down to having a range of models that includes small vans and single-seat vehicles as well as the Nissan Leaf and its cousin, the Renault Zoe – all of which are pitched at different people in different regions with differing levels of disposable income. In January, Nissan reported that it had sold more than 30,000 Nissan Leaf models in the US Read More …

Lea mentors aspiring theater actors

Lea Salonga (MNS Photo) Fresh from her stint on “The Voice of the Philippines” Season 2, Tony award winner Lea Salonga showed off her coaching skills anew to aspiring teen theater actors at Council Rock High School South in Pennsylvania. Video clips of the class posted on YouTube by Corey Axler showed Lea performing a medley of “Les Misérables” tunes. She then noted, “The less work that you show you’re doing, the better. No singer should look like they’re having a tough time getting the notes out.” The Broadway star shared her secret to overcoming nerves by ignoring the audience. “You see that ‘Exit’ sign? Look at (that) and at no one else. And think about (a person you wish were with you at that moment)… In your mind, all the stuff that you used to do together… Whatever it is, think about (it) really, really, super clear in your head. And when you look at the exit sign, you see his face and you sing to him,” she said. Lea also spoke to the students one by one after each performed a song in front of the class. She told a student identified as Libby Tofig, who sang “Still Hurting” from “The Last Five Years,” to try and draw emotion from the hurt brought about by the end of a relationship – before letting her perform for the second time. “This is one of the songs that is acted more than (sung), and so I’m noticing that you are Read More …

Pacquiao teleconference call terminated early

The eagerly-anticipated May 2 welterweight unification showdown in Las Vegas promises to be the most lucrative fight in boxing history. “I am very excited,” Pacquiao said Wednesday at the Wild Card gym in Hollywood. “My training and my conditioning is good. I can feel it. I am ready.” Photo: Benny Uy Los Angeles, United States, AFP, Tuesday 4/21/2015 – Manny Pacquiao’s teleconference call on Monday was abruptly halted just minutes after it began with promoter Bob Arum delivering an obscenity before telling organizers to shut it down. “Oh (expletive),” Arum said after the moderator said the first question would come from Michael Marley of Examiner.com. “Do this call some other time. Let’s reorganize and do this call some other time, please.” Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach commented briefly before the call was taken over by Arum who had said earlier he wasn’t happy with the idea of it. “We are ready to go. We had a great training camp and good sparring partners,” Roach said of the mega showdown with Floyd Mayweather on May 2 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Asked how his training was going Pacquiao simply said, “very good.” Reporters were then told Pacquiao had boxed 12 rounds in a sparring session on Saturday. There was no mention of tickets for the fight which are still not up for sale with the mega fight just two weeks away. The contracts with the MGM also remain unsigned and there is no word on the closed circuit television. Read More …

Aquino sees no need to convene National Security Council over China – Palace

Members of Bayan Muna hold a picket in front of Chinese consulate in Makati on Friday April 17 to protest against China’s reclamation activities in Panganiban Reef, part of the disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea. Recent satellite pictures showed the Chinese constructing facilities in the area. (MNS Photo) MANILA, Apr 21 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III does not see the need to convene the National Security Council (NSC) amid China’s recent actions in disputed areas in the South China Sea, Malacañang said Tuesday. Asked via text message if there is a necessity for Aquino to meet the NSC to tackle China’s aggression, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte replied, “In the President’s view, not at this time.” Valte added that the Cabinet’s security cluster – which is composed of defense, military and police officials – regularly tackles the Philippines’ territorial dispute with China in its meetings with Aquino. “I am not aware of any discussions regarding convening the NSC at this time to take up the West Philippine Sea dispute,” the Palace official said. The NSC is chaired by the president.  Its other members are the Vice President, the Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff, the NSC director-general, the executive secretary, the secretaries of foreign affairs, national defense, interior and local government, justice, and labor and employment. “The security cluster discusses the WPS as a regular item in their agenda as warranted, with the relevant departments present,” she added. On Monday, Senator Francis Escudero urged Aquino Read More …
