DFA: Sabah not at issue in Note Verbale to KL on South China Sea

In this photo taken Feb. 25, 2014 by surveillance planes and released Thursday, May 15, 2014, by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, a Chinese vessel, top center, is used to expand structures and land on the Johnson Reef, called Mabini by the Philippines and Chigua by China, at the Spratly Islands at South China Sea, Philippines. The Philippines has protested China’s reclamation of land in the disputed reef in the South China Sea that can be used to build an airstrip or an offshore military base in the increasingly volatile region, the country’s top diplomat and other officials said Wednesday, May 14, 2014. The white arrow was added by the source. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The recent note verbale from the Philippines to Malaysia on the issue of the extended continental shelf (ECS) in the South China Sea is part of the two neighbors’ “friendly bilateral relations” and does not in any way include the Sabah issue, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday. The DFA comment was sought on a story that the note verbale, transmitted to visiting Malaysian Defense Minister Dato Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, amounted to a quid pro quo — Manila backpedals on its Sabah claim if Kuala Lumpur manifests before a UN body an ECS definition favoring the former’s Spratlys case against China. DFA spokesman Charles Jose’s statement was shared with reporters by Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda. “The Philippines has excellent relations with Malaysia in the context of our friendly bilateral relations. Senator Teofisto Guingona III (right), chair of the Senate Blue Ribbon committee, listens as subcommittee members Senators Antonio Trillanes IV, Aquilino Pimentel III, and Alan Peter Cayetano discuss the measures to be taken after Vice President Jejomar Binay did not show up at the Senate probe on the alleged overpriced Makati City Hall Building II on Thursday, November 6. Binay is in Cebu for several meetings. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) -– Senator Alan Peter Cayetano believes actor Robin Padilla’s criticism of his stance on the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) is related to politics in Taguig. Cayetano, who served as representative of the Taguig-Pateros legislative district, said Padilla is a supporter of the Tiñgas, his family’s erstwhile political rival in the booming city. ”Well, may special mention po kasi. Malapit po kasi sila sa Tiñga eh, so every time na may issue, talagang tinutuligsa kami,” Cayetano said. The Maharlika Village, located in Taguig, is a Muslim community. The city is currently headed by the senator’s wife, Lani Cayetano, who defeated Rica Tiñga in the 2013 elections. Cayetano lamented that some people, including Padilla, have bought the propaganda that he is anti-Muslim given his stance on the BBL and his mistrust of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). ”Magkape kami ni Robin, walang problema. Miriam’s bill seeks to require diaper-changing stations in public places

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago attends the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing of the P10 billion Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam Thursday, November 7. Santiago reminded Napoles that she cannot just invoke her right against self-incrimination MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago wants all major establishments and government offices to be required to have diaper-changing stations in their restrooms or common areas accessible not only to women but to men, as well. In her Senate Bill 2704, Santiago said most establishments did not have diaper-changing tables and those that do, have it only in women’s restrooms. She said parents use the sink of a public restroom due to the absence of diaper-changing tables. “This is unhygienic and also inconvenient for other users of the public restroom,” the senator said. She added that to have changing tables located only in female restrooms assumes that only women have the responsibility to care for children and change their diapers. “It fails to consider that even men are or should be involved in taking care of children,” she said. Under the bill, malls, shopping centers, theaters or movie houses, convention centers, sports arenas, auditoriums, cultural complexes, exhibition halls, permanent amusement parks, health facilities, restaurants that can seat 50 people or more, gasoline stations that have restrooms opened to the public, and establishments measuring 25,000 feet or more should have diaper-changing stations. However, the bill does not apply to an industrial building or a nightclub or bar that does not permit anyone under 18 years old to Read More …

Mikee Cojuangco bats for environmental awareness

Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski (MNS photo) World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Climate Solutions Steward Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski leads this year’s Earth Hour campaign aimed at raising environmental awareness. Held annually, it encourages people to switch off their lights for more than an hour on March 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. In an interview, Mikee said it’s not only Mother Nature that’s been suffering from people’s irresponsibility. She underscored that we are, in fact, ultimately killing ourselves by not taking care of our surroundings. “We all agree naman na we are already feeling the bad effects of climate change. That is why when they approached me, I agreed (to do it). I want to be part of an event that would remind us that simple acts can contribute to (the rehabilitation of) our planet,” she said. Mikee urges everyone to make energy conservation part of their lifestyle. “Medyo malamig naman kapag gabi kaya baka pwedeng ’wag nang buksan ’yung aircon or saglit lang. Kasi ’yung mga ganoong bagay (ay) malaking tulong na,” she said. Educated at a very young age about environmental awareness, Mikee hopes the country would be named No.1 Earth Hour country anew. “For years palagi tayong nangunguna sa ganyan. Siyempre nakakatuwa na we are championing the Earth Hour. Very nice kasi alam mo naman tayong mga Pilipino gustong palaging number one sa mga ganitong bagay,” she said. Alan Cayetano claims MILF out to ‘assassinate’ him

Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday claimed he has been targeted for assassination by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, supposedly to ensure the passage of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law. Appearing at the Kapihan sa Senado, Cayetano said an “official intelligence report” furnished by a law enforcement agency he refused to identify specifically named him, confirming what he learned from “unofficial sources,” who said politicians, including one from Metro Manila, would be “sacrificed” for the BBL’s passage. Asked to show the report naming him, Cayetano said those who furnished him a copy “requested not to divulge it in public since they are still investigating the report.” Nevertheless, he claimed the report said “the threat was specifically for me as a senator.” “Sa unofficial sources, politicians ang tinutukoy (The unofficial sources only mentioned politicians),” he added. In the wake of the January 25 Mamasapano incident, Cayetano withdrew his sponsorship of the proposed BBL, which would create a new autonomous homeland as part of the peace agreement between the MILF and government. Cayetano, who hails from Taguig City, which hosts a large Muslim community, claimed that if the assassination bid succeeded, “palalabasin na naman ng MILF na BIFF iyon, pero hindi naman BIFF iyon, na palagi nilang ginagawa (the MILF will say it is the handiwork of the BIFF, even if it isn’t, which is what they always do).” He also claimed that the two organizations are “BFF, best friends forever.” Read More …

Pacquiao crib loves Barrio Fiesta Glendale

Manny Pacquiao @ Barrio Fiesta Glendale It may be one of the most popular mansions in the U.S., not because it used to be the home of Jennifer Lopez, but it is now owned by probably the most popular Filipino the world has ever seen in the person of Manny Pacquiao. But the humble pugilist remains Filipino at heart, as well as in his stomach, as he treats his guests with traditional Filipino dishes from his favorite restaurant in Southern California – the Barrio Fiesta Glendale. Dinner at Barrio Fiesta Glendale With no less than the proprietor himself, Barrio Fiesta Glendale owner Bobby Yutadco delivering Manny’s favorite dishes in five large trays to Manny’s new love next and even enjoyed a great meal with the boxing champ – a rare feat indeed.
