Pacquiao- Mayweather bout: A rallying event for Filipinos

Boxing hero Manny Pacquiao whose bout with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand Arena on May 2 maybe the biggest fight of his life. True to form, the Filipino boxing icon exudes a solid confidence resulting from many rounds of squaring off with grizzled boxers of varied styles. The two megafighters are fighting maybe for different reasons. Mayweather, who holds an impeccable unbeaten record will not allow anybody to grab the honor and distinction away from him. And he too is fighting for the “right reason” as a prizefighter. He has set his eyes for the million right incentives to go through the rigors and danger of the 12-round event. The kitty is hefty and enough motivation for him, maybe. It took five years of taunting, bitter word exchanges and skillful negotiations before an agreement was reach for the ”fight of the century.” While some releases had it that the Filipino boxing hero of many talents has been quoted as seeing this skirmish with Mayweather as “a bout like any other fight”, to those following him closely, the fight is more than that to his countrymen. On Pacquiao’s shoulders fall the nobler task of proving what the Filipinos are capable of doing. He symbolizes the tenacity and resilience of his race. The money factor which in many instance brought him in “trouble” might not be the biggest consideration, as it sometimes bring in conflict with people whose job is to look for people who make too much and want Read More …

Four large suitcases of evidence delay submission of Mamasapano report

Relatives and supporters of the SAF 44, members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) who were killed during the Mamasapano clash, march along EDSA on Sunday. The march turned out to be a solemn memorial honoring the troopers who died on January 25. (MNS photo) MANILA, Mar 9 (Mabuhay) – The head of the police board that investigated the January 25 Mamasapano incident admitted Monday that the bulk of evidence they had to scrutinize – contained in four large suitcases – made it difficult for them to meet their March 9 deadline. In a press conference, Director Benjamin Magalong, the Philippine National Police-Board of Inquiry (PNP-BOI) said they asked PNP officer-in-charge Leonardo Espina to give them another three days to finish their report. “We cannot sacrifice the quality of our report. Kaya kaninang umaga, tuwag ako kay General Espina at nakiusap ako na kung pwede bigyan kami ng three days pa para matapos ang report. Tatlong araw lang po ang hinihingi namin at by Thursday kaya na namin itong isusumite sa kanya,” Magalong said. Magalong said the delay was due to the bulk of evidence that the BOI’s Operational Audit Team (OAT) needed to scrutinize. Magalong pointed out that the OAT only managed to finish its report and submit it to his office last Friday, instead of its original deadline of February 27. “Ang pinakamalaking trabaho po ay ginawa ng Operational Audit Team. The OAT was supposed to submit their results last February 27 kaya lang po sa Read More …

Gloria Arroyo being persecuted? Palace tosses question to Sandiganbayan

Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo arrives with husband, Jose Miguel, at the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court in Quezon City, Metro Manila, April 11, 2012. REUTERS/Cheryl Ravelo (PHILIPPINES – Tags: POLITICS CRIME LAW) MANILA, Mar 9 (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Monday played coy about the case filed by British lawyer Amal Alamuddin Clooney against the Philippine government over the continued detention of former president and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In a text message, presidential spokesman Secretary Edwin Lacierda did not give a direct answer when sought comment on the case filed before the United Nations. Instead, Lacierda just said that Clooney was “doing her job as a lawyer.” “What more can we say?” the Palace official said. Asked for Malacañang’s response to Clooney’s position that Mrs. Arroyo is a victim of political persecution, Lacierda responded: “Perhaps one should ask the Sandiganbayan that question.” The Sandiganbayan anti-graft court is currently hearing a plunder case in connection with the alleged misuse of P366-million in Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) intelligence funds during Arroyo’s presidency. On Sunday, Mrs. Arroyo’s lawyer, Modesto Ticman, confirmed that Clooney filed the case last month before the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD), a body under the UN Commission on Human Rights. Clooney, wife of Hollywood actor George Clooney, wants Mrs. Arroyo to be released from her detention at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) Read More …

Jinggoy unfazed by court allowing evidence from AMLC

Senator Jinggoy Estrada arrives at the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City on Monday, June 30, for his arraignment over the plunder charges filed against him and businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles in connection with the alleged P10-B pork barrel scam. (MNS photo) MANILA, Mar 9 (Mabuhay) – While Sen. Jinggoy Estrada is disappointed by the decision of the Sandiganbayan to allow the testimony of the Anti-Money Laundering Council in his bail hearing, he remains confident of his chances for temporary freedom. “Athough we are saddened by the decision of the court, we have to abide by it. We are ready. I’m totally unfazed,” Estrada told reporters after his bail hearing Monday. The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division denied with finality the motion of Senator Jinggoy Estrada to block the admission of the AMLC inquiry report on his bank accounts and other assets as the prosecution’s evidence against him for his plunder and graft charges in connection with the pork barrel scam. In an 18-page resolution issued on Thursday, the anti-graft court junked Estrada’s motion for reconsideration for “lack of merit,” saying the senator failed to prove that he had the right to protected from the State’s power to inquire into bank accounts believed to be engaged in illegal activities. Estrada said his lawyers would come up with an appropriate defense against the report, so long as the AMLC special investigator does not tell tall tales. “Ayos lang, basta wag lang sila gumawa ng ibang kwento,” Estrada quipped. In his motion for reconsideration filed last month, Read More …

Treason charges filed vs Aquino

President Benigno S. Aquino III huddles with the ASEAN Law Association (ALA) Officials and Delegates, led by ALA president Indonesian Chief Justice Dr. Hatta Ali, for a snap shot during the courtesy call at the President’s Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Friday (February 27). A non-government organization, ALA brings together all the different branches of the law profession – judges, law teachers, law practitioners and government lawyers. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang is not concerned about the treason complaint filed by a former assemblyman against President Benigno Aquino III and several other officials over the government’s peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). In a text message on Thursday, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the accusations made by lawyer Homobono Adaza and Herman Tiu-Laurel did not have any solid basis. “Hindi natitinag ang determinasyon ng Pangulo na isulong ang prosesong pangkapayapaan sa kabila ng mga paratang na walang matibay na batayan,” Coloma said. On Wednesday, Adaza and Tiu-Laurel lodged a treason complaint against Aquino and members of the Philippine government’s peace panel with the Office of the Ombudsman. The complainants accused Aquino of allowing the MILF, which they described as a “terrorist organization,” to have a “territory, more powers and more new institutions” through the comprehensive peace deal signed by the group and the Philippine government last year. They cited Article 114 of the Revised Penal Code, which states that an individual is guilty of treason when he or she “levies war against the Philippines Read More …

Pacquiao more mindful of mistakes

Manny Pacquiao does his daily routine of exercises at Griffith Park in Los Angeles as the Filipino pugilist is in deep in training for the “fight of his life” against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 2 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Photo: Benny Uy Los Angeles, United States | AFP| – Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao has matured a lot since his six-round knockout loss to Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012. “He has learned a big lesson out of that. He became more cautious and has matured a lot as a fighter,” says Restituto “Buboy” Fernandez, a long-time associate and the assistant trainer for Pacquiao. Fernandez said Pacquiao was winning the fight and was about to finish off Marquez when he became hasty. “He is a fearless fighter inside the ring. In his desire to end the fight in a convincing fashion just to make the fans happy, he went for the kill in the dying seconds of the sixth round. And he paid dearly for it,” recalled Fernandez. Now, Fernandez says, Pacquiao has remained ferocious but is no longer a careless fighter. “His punches now are sharper and harder than before. We’ve been training together for years and I can say it based on actual experience,” said Fernandez, who suffered a cut on his mouth during the punch mitts session at the Fortune Gym on Tuesday. Several times during the punch mitts session, Fernandez was dazed due to non-stop pounding from the Pinoy Read More …

Are Claudine and Marjorie on good terms again?

Claudine Barretto (MNS Photo) Are feuding sisters Claudine and Marjorie Barretto on good terms anew? This was the question among fans of the former actresses after Claudine, on Instagram, shared photos of her and Marjorie’s sons together on Tuesday. The photos, which appear to have been taken inside the campus of Ateneo de Manila University, show Marjorie’s son Leon holding Claudine’s son Santino on his shoulder as they pose for the camera. In the photos’ captions, Claudine said, unedited: “With my 2Boys.Leon & Santino… My 2 blue eagles. Leon & Saint.i missed u soo much Leon! … “I luv u so much.im so so happy to see u today Leon.Mama loves u so much!” Just last week, Claudine also posted a photo of her taping what appears to be a video message for Julia Barretto, another of Marjorie’s four children, for the young actress’ debut on March 10. The rift between the sisters stems from Marjorie’s supporting the claims of Raymart Santiago, Claudine’s estranged husband, that she is mentally ill and has a history of drug abuse. Claudine and Marjorie’s other siblings, Gretchen and JJ, also attested to Santiago’s sworn statement in his legal feud with the actress. Over the past decade, Gretchen, Marjorie and Claudine – who are the youngest siblings of seven, in order – were estranged at different times due to conflicts within their family. Notably, Gretchen and Marjorie had a falling out over the former’s reported tiff with her sister’s husband Dennis Padilla in 2004. Claudine Read More …

The Philippines has protested China’s reclamation of land in the disputed reef in the South China Sea that can be used to build an airstrip or an offshore military base in the increasingly volatile region, the country’s top diplomat and other officials said Wednesday, May 14, 2014. The white arrow was added by the source. (MNS photo) Manila, Philippines |   – The Philippines has suspended operations at a South China Sea natural gas project because it is also claimed by China and the dispute is before a UN tribunal, its contractor said Tuesday. UK-listed Forum Energy said the Philippine energy department’s order halted its exploration activities at the Reed Bank section of the sea, as of December 15 last year. “Forum… today confirms that the Philippine Department of Energy has granted a force majeure on Service Contract 72 because this contract area falls within the territorial disputed area of the West Philippine Sea,” said its mother firm Philex Petroleum.
