Over 30? Flu less frequent: study

Coming down with the flu is never pleasant, but the good news is it happens only twice a decade after age 30, according to recent research.©Dirima/shutterstock.com (Relaxnews) – It may not seem that way when you’re lying in bed, asking “why me?” but according to a new study, adults really only catch the flu twice a decade. Many pathogens can cause influenza, according to the London-based research team, which has made it difficult to assess how often people come down with it. In the study, the team analyzed blood samples from volunteers in Southern China and counted antibodies that came from an array of nine flu strains that had passed through the area between 1968 and 2009. Data led them to conclude that while children come down with the flu every other year, on average, adults over 30 get it twice per decade. Flu symptoms are sometimes caused by common cold viruses including rhinovirus and coronavirus, says author Dr. Adam Kucharski of Imperial College London, and some never know they caught the flu because they show no symptoms. “In childhood and adolescence, it’s much more common, possibly because we mix more with other people,” says Dr. Kucharski. “The exact frequency of infection will vary depending on background levels of flu and vaccination.” To account for changes in human immunity to flu that occur over time as we are exposed to different strains of it, the research team developed a mathematical model. The model supports prior research suggesting that our immune Read More …

Ellen Adarna (MNS photo) Here’s some good news for the guys: Sexy actress Ellen Adarna is single again. The “Pasion de Amor” star said she and her boyfriend of almost two years, businessman Raoul Olbes, broke up last September. “Obviously, ‘yung first week, nakaka-miss, pero it’s better for us,” she said. “Kasi, if you think hindi na puwede, that’s the time you have to decide.” Adarna added: “Siguro, dumating ako dun sa point na I have to decide and ‘yun nga ‘yung decision. Wala na, break na. And may mga issues din kami na hindi na talaga naayos and mahirap na ayusin din. Alam naman niya kung ano ‘yung reason.” Opting not to detail what caused the breakup, Adarna continued, “’Tsaka sa personality ko kasi, if ayoko, ayoko talaga, at hindi mo ako mapipilit.” Olbes and Adarna, who have known each other for seven years, would have celebrated their second anniversary as a couple in August. Since their separation, Adarna said she and Olbes have decided not to communicate, “no calls or text,” explaining this is her way of easily moving on from the failed relationship. She said: “Kasi na-experience ko na dun sa first boyfriend ko, for three years, after naming mag-break, super-cry talaga ako. Dinamdam ko talaga. Pero as time flies by, parang hindi na uso sa akin ‘yun. “Kapag ayoko na, ayoko na and walang iyak-iyak. Kailangan move on kaagad! And besides, hindi naman kasi magiging ganun if walang reasons. Senate bill to keep tabs on tax incentives approved

Senators Juan Edgardo Angara (left) and Aquilino Pimentel III (extreme right) exchange views before the Senate passage on third and final reading of the bill postponing the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections from Feb. 21, 2015 to the last Monday of October 2016. Also in photo are Senate President Franklin Drilon and Senators Joseph Victor Ejercito and Paolo Benigno Aquino IV. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Senate committee on ways and means approved a bill that would institutionalize a monitoring system for tax incentives that business entities, corporations and private individuals are receiving from the government. In a hearing on Tuesday, the committee chaired by Sen. Edgardo Angara approved Senate Bill (SB) 2669 or the Tax Incentives Management and Transparency Act (TIMTA) which seeks to promote transparency and accountability in giving and administering tax incentives. Though tax incentives are an important component of the fiscal policy to attract investments, their proper administration is necessary to ensure that the incentives would not have an adverse impact on government revenue, Angara pointed out in an e-mailed statement Wednesday. The incentives on investments in 2011 reached P144 billion, Angara noted, citing a report by the Department of Finance (DOF). The amount is equivalent to 9 percent of the actual government spending and 1.5 percent of the gross domestic product for that year, according to the report. “The Philippines remains strongly competitive in the region… The steady stream of FDIs or foreign direct investments into our economy is not a mere coincidence. It is Read More …

DOJ probe targets justice for all victims of Mamasapano clash

Members of a religious group rally outside the Senate while the inquiry on the Mamasapano clash is ongoing on Monday. The group called for the scrapping of the Bangsamoro Basic Law in light of the clash that claimed the lives of 44 SAF policemen in the hands of Muslim rebels. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila M. De Lima on Wednesday said that the DOJ is pursuing a fair and comprehensive investigation into the encounter that happened in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Jan. 25. According to De Lima, aside from seeking for justice for all the slain members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF), they were also taking into consideration the slain members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), as well as the civilians. De Lima said that the investigation is not only centered on the “SAF 44” because the DOJ Chief believed that all the victims in the incident should be given justice. Likewise, De Lima also said that the DOJ would again send a letter to the leadership of the MILF to ask for their cooperation in the investigation. When asked whether the DOJ is ready to cooperate with the fact-finding mission being pursued by non-government organizations (NGOs) as they have in their possession a report about the testimonies of the MILF members and civilians, De Lima said, they prefer to directly coordinate with the MILF. Transfer of ex-lawmaker to Camp Bagong Diwa hangs

Farmers hold a noise barrage in front of the Department of Agrarian Reform in Quezon City on Tuesday for the passage of agrarian reform bills pending in Congress. A total of 81 Catholic bishops signed a petition on Monday appealing to President Aquino and Congress to pass the bills. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Philippine National Police General Hospital is waiting for the medical results of former APEC Party-list Rep. Edgar Valdez before they make a recommendation on his transfer to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology facility in Camp Dagong Diwa in Taguig. During the hearing before the Sandiganbayan 5th division, PNP medical officer Dr. Benaly Bayani said they are just waiting for the results of Valdez’s 2D echo test and full abdominal ultrasound. These tests were done after Valdez complained of chest pains. Valdez, accused of plunder and graft in connection to the pork scam, has hypertension and type-2 diabetes. Bayani said, however, that Valdez’s hypertension is manageable. His BP is at 120/150. The diabetes, on the other hand, does not require the injection of insulin, the doctor said. The fifth division earlier ordered that as soon as Valdez is discharged, he should be brought to the BJMP facility. Valdez’s lawyer, Joel Ferrer, said they will abide by the court’s ruling saying the continued stay of his client in the hospital may even worsen his condition. “Baka ‘pag nasa ospital, lalo pa magkasakit,” said Ferrer. Marian mum on Karylle’s ‘two-timer’ comment

Marian Rivera (MNS Photo) Marian Rivera refused to comment about the recent revelation of Karylle that she had been “two-timed” by an unidentified ex-boyfriend. Before her current husband Yael Yuzon, Karylle’s last known relationship was with actor Dingdong Dantes, who is now married to Rivera. Rivera said she does not want to comment on the matter since Dantes’ name was never even mentioned by Karylle. “Binanggit ba nila ang pangalan ni Dingdong? Kung hindi naman, wala akong sasabihin. Pero kapag binanggit nila, doon na ako magri-react,” she said. “Basta ngayon, masaya ako sa pagiging Mrs. Dantes na paggising ko sa umaga, ang gwapo ng katabi ko,” she added. It was Vice Ganda brought up the topic on “It’s Showtime” last Friday. During his eponymous love advice segment, “AdVice Ganda,” an audience member shared that her boyfriend of three months has another girlfriend of six years. The comedian then enlisted the help of Karylle and another co-host, Anne Curtis, to give their advice to Danielle Leonardo. He asked Karylle if she ever had a similar experience. “Nangyari na ba sa iyo ‘yan,” Vice Ganda said, “na meron kang boyfriend tapos tinwo-time ka? Para totoo ang hugot. Nangyari na ba ‘yan, na-two-time ka, ‘yung hindi mo alam, may dyowa na?” The question prompted cheers from the audience. Karylle tried to change the topic, but when pressed to answer, said, “Nangyari!” When asked when it happened, Karylle said she no longer remembers. She also diverted the conversation when Vice Ganda asked her directly Read More …

President Benigno S. Aquino III and The Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta Fra’ Matthew Festing troop the line during the Departure Honors at the Malacañan Palace Main Lobby on Tuesday (March 03). (MNS photo) MANILA, Mar 4 (Mabuhay) – After three hours of dialog with the surviving police commandos who were in the Mamasapano mission, President Benigno Aquino III decided to skip formally addressing the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force during the leadership turnover ceremonies on Wednesday. The meeting with the PNP-SAF members that figured in the mission to capture terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan was supposed to last for only 30 minutes, but was extended to over three hours. SAF officers had to wait at the open-air venue in front of the elite unit’s headquarters in Taguig while the President talked with the police commandos. When Aquino finally arrived at the venue for the formal turnover from officer-in-charge Chief Supt. Noli Taliño to new director Chief Supt. Moro Virgilio Lazo, the SAF troopers did not clap. They just watched as the President entered the quadrangle. Media advisories sent to the Malacañang press corps on Tuesday night indicated that Aquino will speak during the ceremony. By Wednesday morning, however, Aquino’s speech was removed from the official programme. Still, a podium with the presidential seal was set up on Wednesday morning on the stage in front of the PNP-SAF headquarters in Taguig. The podium was however removed later in the afternoon. The elder Revilla was allowed by the court to visit his son who sustained a gunshot wound on Saturday. Also in the picture is Sen. Revilla’s wife, Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado (right).(MNS photo) MANILA, Mar 4 (Mabuhay) – Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. will not ask for another furlough after a latest CT scan showed improvement in the condition of his son, Cavite Vice Governor Jolo Revilla. Atty. Raymond Fortun, the Revilla family’s spokesman, said the result of the latest CT Scan on Jolo “unofficially, was pretty encouraging.” “I cannot pinpoint what medical term it should be so I’ll just wait for the doctor’s say on it. But it was encouraging enough that Senator Revilla decided not to push through with his plan to ask the Sandiganbayan for another furlough,” Fortun said. “Senator Revilla felt that Jolo’s condition was not urgent enough to require his presence for today.” Fortun said the Revilla camp decided not to push through with another furlough request so the senator would not be accused of taking advantage of the situation. He said Jolo underwent another CT Scan Tuesday evening, earlier than the original schedule of Wednesday morning due to concerns regarding the distention of his abdomen. “It was a cause for concern among doctors. The medical term is acute abdominal distention where they noticed that Jolo’s umbilical button appeared to have turned over.” “The hospital will be Read More …
