MANILA (Mabuhay) – An abandoned package that triggered a bomb scare in a busy Makati City street Monday morning yielded no explosives but tools, police said. PO2 Alex Witty of the Makati Police Station said that the area – Makati Avenue corner Paseo de Roxas – was declared safe at 12:12 p.m. The abandoned package was reported by a security guard in the area at 11:10 a.m., prompting the city police department to send in personnel from the Explosives and Ordnance division. Witty said personnel from the EOD used a “water charge” to open the abandoned package, and found that the aluminum box contained assorted tools used for repairing computers. Police are reviewing the CCTV footage to determine who left the package in the area, Witty said. The bomb scare slowed down traffic along the two busy Makati streets.  (MNS)

Ruffa Gutierrez speaks about Annabelle Rama, new boyfriend

Ruffa Gutierrez (MNS Photo) RUFFA Gutierrez said all is well now between her and mother Annabelle Rama. Gutierrez said she believed that her mother did not mean any harm when the talent manager criticized her new relationship with French-Israeli businessman Jordan Mouyal at Rama’s recent birthday party. “She was trying to be sarcastic and funny and napunta sa akin yung usapan. So, nung napunta sa akin hindi ko na nakain yung dessert ko kasi katabi ko yung pinapatamaan niya,” the actress said. Gutierrez said she left the party because she was hurt by what her mother had said. Afterwards, they were able to patch things up. “Na-hurt ako because matanda na ako and pinapahiya pa niya ako. Sana, if ever, control lang… self-control. I don’t know kung mababago pa ‘yun. My mom kasi is so frank, she expresses what she feels for that moment and sooner or later she will regret it,” she added. “We’re okay. She’s always at the house and when I see her I always say ‘hi’. I love her naman even if she fights me. She mellowed na sa lagay na yun ha,” Gutierrez said. Mini looks to core range of 5

The 2014 MiniMini is trimming back its range from eight to five models.©Mini (Relaxnews) – BMW has announced that it’s to cut the Mini range down to size in order to focus on five key ‘Superhero’ models. And to give customers even greater levels of care and service. Speaking at an event at BMW’s headquarters in Munich, the Mini brand’s chief, Peter Schwarzenbauer said that the decision was to ensure each new Mini really stands with its own personality and capabilities “Like a superhero.” When BMW resurrected the Mini in 2001 it did so with a single model available in three levels of trim and performance. However, over the past 13 years the range has slowly swollen and there are currently eight different Minis available plus limited edition models. But rather than diluting the brand, the expansion has worked — Mini is enjoying record sales — and has led to some imitation, most notably from Fiat with its equally retro-styled 500 being stretched into a range including a five-door model, a people carrier and most recently, a crossover miniature SUV. Although Schwarzenbauer wouldn’t be drawn on specifics, the cars most likely to get the chop will be the Paceman, the Coupé and the Roadster. Slimming down the range will also give Mini the space to add new levels of customer care and individual service. Bringing a premium touch to the mass market car buying experience is a growing trend. Citroën has recently spun out its DS range as a separate premium Read More …

Gerald Anderson and Maja Salvador (MNS photo) Celebrity couple Gerald Anderson and Maja Salvador have finally agreed to work together on ABS-CBN’s upcoming show “Give Love On Christmas Presents: Gift of Life.” This will be the first onscreen pairing for the real-life couple, who have repeatedly said they prefer not to work with each other. “Masaya kami kasi first time namin na magta-trabaho together tapos para sa Pasko pa. Ito ‘yung Christmas special ng ABS-CBN at Dreamscape para sa Kapuskuhan and may episode kami doon,” Anderson said. Salvador said she was taken by the story of “The Gift of Life” and couldn’t say no to it. “Nung in-offer sa amin ay hindi namin matanggihan dahil ang gandang regalo para sa lahat para makapagbigay ng magandang kwento ngayong Pasko,” Salvador said. Both Anderson and Salvador also see the TV special as a treat to their fans. “Very exciting para sa mga fans at para sa Pasko pa, it’s my favorite season. Ang hirap talagang tanggihan. I’m excited for the story,” Anderson said. Salvador said she had always wanted to work with Anderson, even before they became a couple. “Naging fan din ako nang ginawa niyang trabaho, especially ‘Budoy.’ Kaya nung kinwento ito, eh ano ba ang pakiramdam kung magkatrabaho kaming dalawa. Parang nakaka-excite ang pakiramdam na co-actor ko siya,” she said. “Ang hirap talagang tumanggi kapag-Pasko.” “The Gift of Life” is one of the three episodes of ABS-CBN’s holiday special “Give Love On Christmas.” (MNS)

Meat-Free Favorites – Chimichurri Tofu

by Elena Johnson Chimichurri is a fresh and simple sauce commonly used in Argentina. It gives a vibrant, herbal flavor to any food it accompanies. Here, I’ve paired it with marinated grilled tofu. Chimichurri is also a delicious compliment to grilled seitan (wheat protein), grilled asparagus, and sautéed mushrooms. Chimichurri Tofu Chimichurri Tofu Makes 16 pieces (2) 14-oz. blocks extra firm tofu, drained Marinade: 1 ½ Tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. black pepper 3 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar 2 Tbsp. olive oil Chimichurri: ½ cup parsley, finely chopped 5 cloves garlic, minced 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. black pepper ¼ tsp. crushed red pepper ⅓ cup olive oil Wrap each block of tofu in a few paper towels and place them side by side on a large plate. Set another plate on top of the tofu, and weigh it down with something heavy (e.g. cans of beans or a cast iron pan). Press and drain the tofu for at least 20 minutes, then remove the plates and paper towels. Slice each block of tofu crosswise into 8 even pieces. Whisk marinade ingredients together in a shallow casserole dish. Place tofu slices in the dish and turn them over to coat all sides. Marinate for at least 30 minutes, turning occasionally. President Benigno S. Aquino III with Araneta Center partners during the 60th anniversary celebration Friday (November 21) held at the Gateway Tower in Cubao, Quezon City. With the president are Manny Pangilinan, Andrew Tan of Mega World, Teresita Sy-Coson of SM, Jorge Araneta , Alfredo Ramos of National Bookstore and Amb. Bienvenido Tantoco and daughter Zenaida Tantoco of Rustans. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang assured that President Benigno Aquino III would consider the best candidate to replace Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Billantes once he retires in February 2015. “The President always takes into consideration the best possible candidates for any vacancy in government,” Deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said on state-run radio. When asked if Aquino would elect an insider as requested by the Comelec employees, Valte said the president is “cognizant of the call to appoint an inside.” Rank-and-file employees of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) urged Aquino to consider appointing “insiders” as successors of retiring poll officials. “The President considers the best interest of the agency and the people when it comes to the appointment,” she said. Brillantes, who was not an insider, was a veteran election lawyer before he was appointed by Aquino to head the poll body. Brillantes along with Commisioners Lucenito Tagle and Elias Yusoph will retire on February 2 next year. Tagle was a retired Court of Appeals justice while Yusoph was a provincial prosecutor in Marawi City before they were appointed to Comelec by former president and now Pampanga Representative Read More …

Comelec backs creation of presidential debate commission

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago attends the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing of the P10 billion Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam Thursday, November 7. Santiago reminded Napoles that she cannot just invoke her right against self-incrimination (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is supporting a proposed measure of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago which seeks the creation of a presidential debate commission. Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said requiring presidential and vice-presidential aspirants to face each other in a debate would be for the benefit of the voters. “Pagdating sa lebel ng presidential, nagiging issue dito ang pagsipot ng kandidato. Kung bahagi na ng batas ang debate, na talagang itinalaga for this purpose, siguro mas lalalim ang usapan pagdating sa mga isyu at iba’t ibang plataporma ng mga kandidato,” Jimenez said. Santiago’s Senate Bill 1797 seeks to establish a Presidential Debate Commission which will “schedule the debates for the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, submit reports evaluating the debates scheduled by the Commission itself and by other agencies, organization or the mass media, and formulate the guidelines for the adoption of the best format for the debates.” Santiago’s bill remains pending with the Senate committee on electoral reforms and people’s participation. Jimenez believes the public wants the presidential debates institutionalized. “Nararamdaman namin na gusto rin talaga ng publiko. Ang kailangan eh matimbrehan ang mga kongresista na ito ang gusto ng kanilang constituency,” he said. (MNS)

China blasts ‘irresponsible’ US comments on island project

PHILIPPINE SEA (Sept. 18, 2013) Sailors assigned to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Preble (DDG 88) prepare for an underway replenishment as the guided-missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) conducts an underway replenishment with the Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Yukon (T-AO 2). Preble and Curtis Wilbur are on patrol with the George Washington Carrier Strike Group in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Paul Kelly BEIJING (AFP) – Beijing on Monday dismissed as “irresponsible” US criticism of its construction of an artificial island reportedly large enough for an airstrip in a disputed section of the South China Sea. The statement by China’s foreign ministry came after a US military spokesman urged Beijing to stop what it described as a vast land reclamation project on the Spratly Islands. The island chain, which the Chinese call Nansha, is also claimed in whole or part by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. “External forces have no right to make irresponsible remarks,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a briefing when asked about Washington’s comments. “The construction activities China is undertaking are for the improvement of the working and living conditions of the island-stationed personnel, so that they can better fulfil their international obligations and responsibilities in search and rescue.” A report last week by IHS Jane’s Defence revealed new details of a land reclamation project China is undertaking Read More …
