(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Chinese-Filipino businessman Antonio Tiu told a Senate hearing on Wednesday that he paid an P11-million downpayment to buy the controversial property in Batangas province, which is being linked to Vice President Jejomar Binay. Responding to queries of Senate Majority Leader Alan Cayetano during the hearing of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee, Tiu said he paid P11 million as downpayment for a 150-hectare property in Batangas, which costs P446 million. Former Makati City Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado earlier told the subcommittee that the property was 350 hectares with an estimated amount of P1.2 billion. He claimed that the property belonged to the Vice President. “The total downpayment made so far is P11 million,” Tiu said, responding to Cayetano’s question. “For P446-million property, P11 million pa lang binabayaran n’yo? Nasa TV kayo araw araw, (at sinasabing) akin na ‘yan,” Cayetano asked. (For a P446-million property, you have only paid P11 million? You are on TV every day claiming that that property is already yours.) “Nasa pangalan na po kasi (It’s already in my name). Meron na pong usufruct rights,” said the businessman, referring to his earlier statement that he had already bought the usufruct or right to Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III on Monday rallied the Philippines’ wartime allies behind peaceful resolution to modern-day conflicts between countries. During the 70th anniversary commemoration of the Leyte Landing, Aquino encouraged envoys from the US, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Japan to continue their “genuine and meaningful solidarity’ with the Philippines. “Let us honor the peace that has reigned over our nation for 70 years. Let us renew our commitment to strong and enduring friendships between the Philippines and its wartime allies, and perhaps with the countries that once we opposed,” Aquino said in a speech. The President made this statement amid the Philippines’ ongoing territorial conflict with China over parts of the South China Sea, which Manila calls the West Philippine Sea. “We commit to peace as the true legacy of a conflict that should never be repeated, and look to a shared future bound by the trust we now extend towards each nation and nourished by the freedom we so cherish,” he added. Also in his speech, Aquino once again thanked the international community for helping the Philippines in its recovery efforts after Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which hit parts of Visayas almost a year ago. He said aid for Filipinos that poured from all over the world in Yolanda’s aftermath showed the international community’s “commitment to help each other.” “Typhoon Read More …

Gretchen wants another film with John Lloyd

Gretchen Barretto (MNs Photo) Actress Gretchen Barretto wants to have another movie with John Lloyd Cruz, her co-star in the upcoming film “The Trial”. Barretto said it is an honor to work with Cruz, who is considered one of the country’s best actors today. Noting her recent showbiz comeback, Barretto said she has become more selective when it comes to her projects and co-actors. “Ngayon na nakabalik ako sa industriyang pinakamamahal ko, siyempre there are few actors na gusto kong makasama. Hindi natin alam kung hanggang kailan tayo artista or hanggang kailan tayo kukunin. So one of my ultimate dreams, sinabi ko, is to work with John Lloyd because I watch his movies. I am a big fan, I believe in his talent,” she said. “So noong sinabi nila na I’m doing a movie with him, ang laki ng pasasalamat ko sa ABS-CBN, sa Star Cinema. I didn’t feel there was a John Lloyd on the set because talagang nasa character na siya,” she added. Barretto then told Cruz, “Mag-pelikula tayo ulit,” and he actor replied with a smile. Seeing his reaction, Barretto said: “I’m just grateful.” “The Trial”, which also stars Jessy Mendiola and Richard Gomez, hit cinemas nationwide last October 15. (MNS)

P54-B for MRT 3 buyout most likely to be slashed from DOTC 2015 budget: Chiz

President Benigno S. Aquino III meets with his Cabinet Secretaries at the President’s Hall of Malacanang Monday (October 13) concerning the status of the MRT 3 maintenance. The President is concerned about negative reports he has been receiving regarding Metro Rail operations. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Department of Transportation and Communications’ (DOTC) plan to buy out the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3) for almost P54 billion is unprogrammed and is not reflected in the 2015 General Appropriations Act (GAA), Senator Chiz Escudero said. Escudero, chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, said the P54 billion which the DOTC has set aside for the takeover of the MRT 3 will be sourced from a loan, and not from the national treasury. “That amount which was authorized by DOF (Department of Finance) Secretary Cesar Purisima to effect the MRT 3 buyout is actually a loan. Thus, although it is unprogrammed once the loan has been signed, it will reflect in the GAA and the DOTC is apparently to push through with the buyout,” Escudero said. He, however, said he is most likely to slash the amount from the GAA or realign it to more essential services for the general public like the much needed infrastructure to ease traffic congestion and disaster preparedness programs. “While it is true that we need to improve our mass transport system, I have not been convinced by the DOTC that a takeover with a very high price tag is what we need at this Read More …

Legarda cites Germany’s experience in improving PHL’s natural resources governance

Senator Loren Legardo (photo courtesy of facebook profile page) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Loren Legarda today said that the Philippines can learn a lot from Germany’s experience in natural resources management and improving relevant policies, particularly on land use planning, coastal protection, sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation. Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committees on Environment and Natural Resources and on Climate Change, made the statement following a study visit to Germany with fellow Philippine legislators and policymakers from October 12-17, 2014. The German Government, through the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), extended the invitation to Philippine legislators as part of a project under the framework of the “Land Use Policy and Spatial Planning, Sustainable Forest Management, Adaptation to Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation” program supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Legarda said that the study tour provided important insights into natural resources management, which Philippine legislators can learn from especially since the Senate and the House of Representatives are working on several proposed measures, including the National Land Use Policy, Final Forest Limits Act, Protected Areas Declaration Act, and the Integrated Coastal Management Act. “Germany’s experience highlights the strong coordination and open lines of communication between Federal (national), local governments, business and civil society. This should also be the case in our country. A national land use policy is crucial in the government’s current disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation efforts. The cooperation and support of all sectors of society is crucial in Read More …

Racing on autopilot: Audi takes a driverless car to the track

Piloted driving from motorway to raceway. ©Audi Audi is planning to race a driverless car around the Hockenheim circuit as part of the DTM German Touring Car Championship. However, the car that takes to the 4.57km track and negotiates its 17 turns won’t be some souped-up, track-focused race car. It will be the company’s flagship sportsback sedan, the RS7. As well as for making an entertaining spectacle, the idea behind the demonstration, which will see the car hit speeds of up to 149 mph (240 km/h), is to show how much ground Audi has already covered in the race towards making autonomous driving a reality. The car will be using an array of sensors to navigate the circuit and to help it to drive on the limit but without surpassing it. Audi expects the RS7 to be capable of lapping Hockenhiem in under two minutes and the attempt will be broadcast live on the internet via Audi’s MediaTV channel. The fun will start at 12:45 CET on October 19. The company is by no means the only carmaker to have taken to the track to demonstrate its self-driving tech capabilities. Both BMW and Volkswagen also have ‘track training’ cars in their research and development departments and BMW was even brave enough to let UK TV show “Top Gear” take its modified 3-Series out on the track back in 2011.

Julita Laude said she may forgive US Marine Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton, but only if he will confess to what he did and is rightfully punished for it. “Tao rin naman ako, ‘di ako Diyos. Patatawarin ko siya, pero iba ang sitwasyon ng pagpapatawad. May hustisya tayo, doon ka,” the 51-year-old said. Julita added that despite criticism, they will not give up their fight for justice for her transgender child. “’Yung pinaglalaban namin ngayon, may pupuntahan. Hirap man kami sa una at may takot din kami,” she said. She disclosed that their family feels bad about accusations that they were causing trouble in the area, which supposedly is benefiting from assistance given by US troops like Pemberton who are participating in joint military exercises in the country. “Nakakapamerwisyo lang daw kami… ‘Yung mga Amerikanong pumupunta rito nakakatulong,” Julita said. “Oo, nandoon na ako, pero Read More …
