Filipino nurses at risk of getting infected by Ebola virus

Nurses in a Dallas hospital in Texas where a Liberian Ebola patient died recently, expressed resentment that they were given few rules and limited guidance on how to treat patients who have contracted the deadly virus. The nurses, some of them Filipinos, expressed their displeasure in a press conference after learning that they were being blamed for “breaching protocols” at the Texas Health Presbyterian hospital which led to a nurse becoming infected with the deadly virus. She is the nurse that cared for the Liberian Ebola patient during his confinement at the hospital after being diagnosed with Ebola. It is still unclear how many Filipino nurses and caregivers are employed at the Texas Health Presbyterian hospital. As of this writing, the nurse, of Vietnamese decent, is getting the best care and treatment. Her family was quoted in the press saying that she is in good spirit and remain confident that she will survive the deadly virus. Amid fears of the disease, President Obama recently gave assurance that the dangers of a serious outbreak in America is very minimal. He, however said that his administration is closely monitoring it’s progress and seriously taking it  at the highest levels of government. In an effort to to further quell what appears to be a nationwide fears about the deadly virus outbreaks, he gave assurance that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC)  would be sending rapid response teams to any site in America where an Ebola diagnosis was made. Ebola is one of Read More …

Revilla confirms closing bank accounts amid pork scandal, denies stealing money

Senator Bong Revilla, shown in photo on his way to be detained on plunder and graft charges, said his lawyer, Sal Panelo, only talked about the rats and roaches in his cell in jest. Revilla’s lawyer has said the senator’s family saw rats “as big as cats” inside the senator’s cell. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. on Thursday confirmed that he had closed several banks accounts at the time when the pork barrel fund scam was exposed by the media. “I’m not denying that. That is true,” Revilla said in a chance interview with reporters at the sidelines of the hearing of his petition for bail before the Sandiganbayan First Division. “Kung sa inyo man mangyari, marami nag-a-advise sa ‘yo, ‘Pag ‘di mo nilabas ang pera mo sa bangko ifri-freeze ‘yan.’ “Ilalabas mo rin, ‘di ba? That’s a normal reaction ng kahit na sinong tao… dahil pinaghirapan mo ‘yan ng legal, eh,” the detained senator said. Revilla, however, maintained that all the money in his bank accounts were acquired legally, especially from his income as an actor, pointing out that he entered show business at a very young age. “Basta ang masasabi ko lang, we can justify everything. Lahat ‘yan pinaghirapan namin. Bata palang ako artista na ako at mayaman na ako,” Revilla said. From his most recent television series alone, he earned as much as P40 million,” the senator claimed. “Siguro naman sa larangan ng pagkita, bilang Bong Revilla, isa rin naman ako sa Read More …

Aquino inherited port congestion from past administrations – Almendras

The mess in the Manila seaports started in the past administrations, Almendras, who heads the Cabinet Cluster on Port Congestion, told the panel on trade, commerce and entrepreneurship. MANILA (Mabuhay) – Accusations hurled by the business community that the government lacked foresight in the worsening congestion now gripping the ports of Manila are simply “unfair” as the Aquino administration merely inherited the problem from the neglect exercised by administrations. This was how Secretary to the Cabinet Jose Rene Almendras on Thursday defended the government from the business community during the Senate committee hearing. The mess in the Manila seaports started in the past administrations, Almendras, who heads the Cabinet Cluster on Port Congestion, told the panel on trade, commerce and entrepreneurship. “Some chambers of commerce said there was no foresight but, in reality, there was. It’s just that we’re restraint by actions in the past administrations that really just put it aside,” he said. “It is an unfair accusation that there’s no foresight. There’s a lot of foresight. The realities of political considerations, at that time, play the role,” he added. On Wednesday, American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AmCham) senior adviser John Forbes said government should not only expedite decongestion efforts but also work on improving logistics in the long term. Last August, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr. told GMA News Online the problem now hounding the cargo gateways is actually rooted in lack of planning and foresight to accommodate the economic boom Read More …

LOS ANGELES – (Oct. 16, 2013) – Gearing up for the first game of their regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 28, the Los Angeles Lakers made a preseason practice stop at the Pechanga Recreation Center on the Pechanga Indian Reservation in Temecula, Calif. On Thursday, October 16 from 11 a.m. to 12:30, players and coaches participated in a shoot around at the Tribe’s recreation center with tribal youth and members following the action as spectators. The Los Angeles Lakers have been traveling to many points across Southern California for exhibition games during the three-week preseason, and the shoot around in Temecula was a chance for the team to show gratitude for inland Southern California fans’ loyalty. The Lakers’ practice in Temecula was not open to the public, though members of the media were invited to interview coaches and players following the shoot around. “We deeply appreciate our partnership with the Lakers and their commitment to the broader Southern California community,” said Tribal Chairman Mark Macarro.  “Our youth were ecstatic.  Today, they witnessed a focused, structured practice with high intensity, and what it takes to be a champion.” “It’s great to see the support we have all over Southern California, not just in Los Angeles,” said Lakers Head Coach, Byron Scott. “The guys [players] love it and motivates them to even better.” Pechanga has been a longtime donor to the Lakers Youth Foundation and sponsor of the Los Angeles Lakers. The team held a similar practice at Pechanga in 2010 at the newly-built Read More …

(U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Eric Coffer/Released) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A human rights lawyer will be the counsel of the family of a transgender woman killed in Olongapo City earlier this month. Lawyer Harry Roque Jr. will represent the family of Jeffrey Laude, also known as Jennifer, in the case to be filed against a US Marine linked to the killing. Roque said he would talk to the family of Jennifer first before heading for the Hall of Justice in Olongapo City where police are expected to lodge a murder complaint against Pfc. Joseph Scott Pemberton. Roque is also one of the lawyers who had questioned the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement between the Philippines and the United States. In an entry on his blog Tuesday, Roque said Laude’s case “recalls yet again the iniquitous provisions of the Visiting Forces Agreement on detention facilities for US servicemen found guilty of violating Philippine laws.” “We should learn from history, foreign military presence and national interest do not mix well,” he added. The US Marine is implicated in the killing of Laude, who was Read More …

Miriam mulls probe on transgender’s murder

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago announces during a press conference on Wednesday (July 2, 2014) that she has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. “God never asks us for an opinion. God just goes ahead and does whatever is in His hands. I just say okay,” Santiago says. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago is planning to investigate the murder of a Filipino transgender woman by an alleged US Marine while renewing her call to abolish the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). Santiago, who chairs the Senate foreign relations committee, said the case of Jennifer Laude presents an opportunity to reevaluate the agreement. “Paimbestigahan ko nga ‘yan,” she told reporters on Wednesday. “I can open it and I can start the hearing as long as I comply with the three-day notice rule. I have to give them notice in three days’ time.” While the committee does not have the power to invite or subpoena foreign officials, Santiago said she may include witnesses and law enforcers to the probe. She added, however, that she would consult with government agencies first to make sure the Senate’s probe would not hamper their own investigation. Santiago, who has always been against the VFA, believes Laude’s murder and a 2006 rape case involving an American soldier – whom the appellate court later acquitted – are enough reasons to scrap the agreement. “These are no longer temporary but periodic irritants in RP-US relations,” she said. The senator said that in the meantime, the government must Read More …

MANILA (Mabuhay) – Expect cooler days ahead as Amihan, the northeast monsoon, has officially started, state weather agency PAGASA said Thursday. PAGASA said a high-pressure system over China has shifted the direction of the northeasterly wind over to Luzon, bringing cold and dry air to the northern part of the Philippines. “Colder early morning temperature in the coming days and months are likely to be felt over Luzon, with chances of light rains especially over the Northern and Eastern section,” it said. It added that weather conditions over the rest of the country will be generally fair apart from isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening. Meanwhile, state-run Panahon TV posted a graphic saying goodbye to Habagat, or the southwest monsoon, and welcoming the colder days from Amihan. According to PAGASA, the minimum temperature over extreme Northern Luzon has gone down, while strong to gale-force northeasterly winds were observed over the seaboard of Northern Luzon. “These meteorological conditions normally signify the start of the Northeast Monsoon season,” it said. Cool winds from the Northeast Monsoon are associated with the Christmas season in the Philippines. The Philippines is known for having the world’s longest Christmas season, with preparations starting as early as September. Filipinos are also known to count down the 100 days leading to Christmas starting the second week of September. (MNS)

Only 32 food packs spoiled – Albay gov

Mayon Volcano on September 23, 1984: Pyroclastic flows descend the south-eastern flank of Mayon Volcano, Philippines. Then, the maximum height of the eruption column was 15 km above sea level, and volcanic ash fell within about 50 km toward the west. There were no casualties from the 1984 eruption because more than 73,000 people evacuated the danger zones as recommended by scientists of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. (Mayon VolcanoPublic Domain C.G. Newhall, Wikipedia) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Albay Governor Joey Salceda defended the national government over the delivery of rotten food to some Mayon evacuees. Salceda said only 32 of the total 220,000 food packs delivered to the evacuees by a national government caravan had food that were spoiled. “Let’s talk about the 99.9% good! This 0.1% incident only serves to prove that the 99.9% is in order and that Albay camp management protocols are working,” he said. “The errant packs were never in the hands of the evacuees as they were interdicted at the camp management level or 3 steps away before they were distributed to the barangay officials, who then distribute them to the barangay kagawads/purok officers or room official then to an evacuee family.” Salceda blamed the multiple-handling of goods during delivery for the spoilage. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) earlier said the canned goods may have been pierced during delivery, resulting in spoilage. The governor said to prevent a similar incident in the future, the DSWD and Albay authorities have agreed Read More …
