Ms. Hasmin Mama, one of the 37 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) repatriated from Syria, expresses gratitude to the Philippine government and Embassy personnel who helped them come home. These 37 female OFWs arrived Friday (March 7) afternoon via EK 332 of Emirates Airlines at the Gate 3 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.(MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) — At least 95 overseas Filipino workers are due to return from strife-torn Libya, and have crossed the Tunisian border of Ras Ajdir last July 31, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Saturday. The DFA said Secretary Albert del Rosario met Friday with some of the OFWs, who it said are ready to be repatriated. “This current batch of Filipino evacuees crossed the Tunisian border of Ras Ajdir on July 31. They were bused to the Island of Djerba, over 120 kilometers from the border, where they are being temporarily hosteled, while awaiting their flights to Manila on Sunday,” the DFA said. During the meeting, del Rosario assured the OFWs of the government’s continuing assistance for them. A Philippine government rapid response team has representatives from the DFA, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), and Philippine foreign service posts in surrounding areas. Meanwhile, del Rosario urged the OFWs to convince their friends and co-workers still in Libya to avail of mandatory evacuation undertaken by the government. He also noted the border crossing between Tunisia and Libya was closed due to the shooting incident on July 31. Read More …

Eighty minutes in saving the quality of a patient’s life

(Conclusion) I remembered verifying the dose on my phone and checking  on the ongoing resuscitation which had settled hundred-a- minute chest compressions, ten-a-minute respirations and adrenaline every four minutes. A few minutes after the first injection, and with a drip running, the patient’s heart started to pump under its own power and continued to do so after a few minutes..However, the fast beeping of the cardiac monitor suddenly slowed, and again the rush to find the pulse and the calls for “Epi” and “Compress” followed. One more electric shock. One more round of resuscitation and then the patient’s heart rhythm stabilized., but there was no measurable blood pressure. She was within an inch of her life and we had to fight for fractions of that inch. One misstep and it would all be over. Even doing everything right, we could still lose on this day and in the days to come. Suddenly, I caught the eye of the Critical Care Fellow. I showed her my shaking hands. I will admit to choking occasionally in a resuscitation response and I have never frozen up nor had the shakes before, but I badly want this patient to live and come back whole. So I ordered to “infuse more fluid!” But deliberated on it because the “right heart was too large and it’s cutting off the left side.” At that very moment some questions kept creeping on me: “which medications can help to stabilize the pressure?” “What mode of breathing support to use?” What procedure Read More …

Biazon: Don’t pick on Arroyo generals

President Benigno S. Aquino III hands-over the Saber to Lt. Gen. Gregorio Catapang Jr. during the Armed Forces of the Philippines Change of Command ceremony at the AFP General Headquarters grandstand of Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo last July 18. Retiring AFP Chief Emmanuel Bautista has been replaced by Lt. General Catapang (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – House Defense Committee chairman Rodolfo Biazon wants more evidence on the alleged destabilization plot against President Aquino, saying it is unfair to link retired military officers supposedly loyal to former President Arroyo of involvement in the plot. Biazon said he does not see a need for his panel to conduct an investigation on the alleged destabilization. However, he said he will start the investigation if a congressman files a resolution to that effect. “Sa mga coup attempts, marami nasira ang buhay diyan. It will be unfair for those living peaceful lives to be dragged into this. It is unfair to those so-called Arroyo generals. Not all of them did anything to be serving under President Arroyo. Kaya sila andun, yun trabaho nila eh. Yung walang kakibo-kibo, nababanggit pangalan. Kung meron tayong sapat na ebidensiya, dapat yan lumabas para yung nababanggit na walang kamuwang, kailangan malaman natin kung meron yan,” he said. Biazon, a former Armed Forces chief, said he made some inquiries and saw there was no reason for the military to go against the current commander in chief. He noted that President Benigno Aquino III has poured more money into the Armed Forces Read More …

Cebu Pacific, Tigerair make progress with interline agreement

Cebu Pacific says they are banning shark fin carriage effective immediately because of its “unsustainable shark fishing and our carriage of shark fin is not aligned with (our) position on sustainable development.” Cebu Pacific and Tigerair, the two largest low-cost carriers in the Philippines and Singapore respectively, have made further progress on their interline agreement with the first interline flights available on Cebu Pacific’s website from 23 July 2014.  Tigerair flights will be available on Cebu Pacific’s website from September 2014.  With the interline agreement facilitating both domestic and international collaboration between both airlines, Cebu Pacific and Tigerair have created the biggest network of flights from the Philippines to the region. The interline agreement is part of a wide-ranging strategic alliance entered into between the two carriers earlier this year and will enable both airlines to leverage their respective strengths to enhance their network coverage and jointly market interline routes.  Travelers can enjoy seamless connections between the two airlines, with easy one-stop ticketing for connecting flights and baggage check-in.  The ability to cross-book flights on a single itinerary will pave the way for greater connectivity between the two carriers, allowing customers to connect seamlessly within Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Specifically, Tigerair’s customers will be able to fly from South East Asia to 34 Philippine cities, Korea and Japan on Cebu Pacific’s network, and Cebu Pacific’s customers in the Philippines will be able to add Tigerair’s destination calls in Australia (via Perth), India and China to their flight itineraries.  Read More …

Cojuangco pushes for reopening of Bataan nuclear power plant

Aquino was in San Carlos City where he led a ceremonial switch-on of the 22-megawatt (MW), $45-million San Carlos Solar Energy Inc. (SACASOL) (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Former congressman Mark Cojuangco says had the government started running the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) in 2010, the country could have prevented an impending power crisis next year. Cojuangco, a staunch nuclear power advocate, had a tour and lecture sponsored for some residents of Morong, Bataan about the BNPP. Cojuangco says it will take 4 years to restart the BNPP. In his lecture, Cojuangco showed residents video and photo of his trip to various countries with nuclear facilities. He addressed residents’ fears of a nuclear meltdown. The BNPP was ready for operation since 1985. Government paid more than $2 billion including interest, and was fully paid in 2007. Yet despite the enormous cost, consumers have not been able to benefit from the 620-megawatt plant. Cojuangco appealed to President Aquino, his second cousin, to make the reopening of Bataan nuclear plant his legacy in his remaining years in office. He noted this is not just for the Aquino administration but for future generation of Filipinos. But Bataan vice governor Efren Pascual says the reopening of the nuclear power plant and even the plan to put up a coal fired power plant within the BNPP compound needs their approval as host province. Pascual adds the provincial government has not made a decision on the reopening of the BNPP since it still wants to Read More …

Susan Oca did it again! After her successful stint hosting a dance event for seniors last month, where she, together with some friends, bestowed awards to some seniors in different categories, Susan this time connected her seniors to businesses that primarily have them as the target market. Here is Susan’s story: Susan came to America in search of the American Dream. She left behind family, earthly possessions, fond memories. Armed with her God-given talents and a deep faith in the future, she braved the uncertainties of the New World. She went from one state to another, hopped from one job to another, in search of that elusive American Dream. Why Senate can’t suspend Enrile just yet

Senate Minority Floor Leader Juan Ponce Enrile (center) arrives at the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City on Friday, July 11, to attend his arraignment on graft and plunder charges in connection with the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. He faces one count of plunder and 15 counts of graft. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The Office of the Senate President told the Sandiganbayan on Thursday that it could not yet suspend Senator Juan Ponce Enrile over his pork barrel scam cases. The letter, signed by Senate President Franklin Drilon’s chief of staff Atty. Renato Bantug Jr., said the body would still have to wait for the court’s decision on Enrile’s motion for reconsideration over his suspension. “This Office hereby manifests that it would take appropriate action on the suspension order upon the Honorable Court’s disposition of the motion for reconsideration..” the letter reads. But in a letter sent by Enrile’s chief of staff Cherbett Maralit sent to Drilon’s office, and attached to the letter sent to Sandiganbayan, Enrile’s camp said it would only file their motion for reconsideration on or before August 1, Friday. The Senate said it could only suspend Enrile ”upon the lapse of the prescribed period to file the motion for reconsideration and no such motion is filed,” Drilon’s letter read. The court gave Enrile 90 days upon receipt of the resolution to file his appeal. The anti-graft court has ordered Enrile’s suspension for 90 days, concurring with government prosecutors’ claims that the veteran lawmaker can use his Read More …

TESDA chief comes clean on ‘ghost scholars’

Students pray on the first day of classes at Casili Elementary School in Rodriguez, Rizal province, east of Manila June 2, 2014. Around 23 million students were present for the opening of the new school year in the Philippines, the Department of Education reported on Monday. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) debunked Thursday claims of irregularities in its use of funds from the disbursement acceleration program (DAP). TESDA Secretary General Joel Villanueva said contrary to a report by the Commission on Audit that part of the controversial fund may have financed 61 “ghost scholars” in 2011, an internal investigation revealed only 38 were questionable due to double availments. He also said TESDA has ordered schools that failed to implement the scholarship program to return the money allotted to them. “We closed some of the programs in schools. In Quezon City about 8 or 12. One in Metro Manila. It was corrected and COA agreed with us. This is why they did not issue a notice of suspension or disallowance,” he said. “[One school] said they had two shiftings. [Gusto kumita ng extra]. What we did is pinabalik natin. P40,000 binalik sa National Treasury.” In the COA report, the agency noted that 61 scholars “attended multiple training courses which were held simultaneously.” Meanwhile, Villanueva said out of the total P1.1 billion in DAP funds released to TESDA in October 2011, only 3 percent or P38 million was unutilized. This is lower than the Read More …

Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez rallies townmates to rebuild province

Aquino reported in his State of the Nation Address the readiness of the blue print for the rehabilitation and recovery plans for Cebu, Iloilo, Eastern Samar, Leyte and Tacloban City. Some P28 billion has been earmarked for the project. More than eight months after Super Typhoon Yolanda hit land, over 2,000 families still live in the tent cities and more than 8,000 families need to be relocated from the no-build zones. One of the most disastrous typhoons that visited the Philippines in recent time, Yolanda killed thousands and left millions homeless. Local executives of Tacloban City welcome Tacloban Recovery and Rehabilitation Plan (TRRP) in a city that used to earn P800 M a year and was down to P620 but urged “to please hurry” as the residents are becoming “frustrated day by day”. For his part, Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez whose own family had its share of misfortune from the November Super Howler, is rallying his townmated to accelerate the rebuilding effort and was in Southern California at the Josephine Restaurant in Cerritos over the weekend  upon the invitation of Tacloban CityAssociation whose members have relatives  in the Philippines similarly stricken.
