PHL to host another round of ‘goodwill games’ with Vietnam

Two days after Philippine and Vietnamese navy personnel drank beer and played volleyball together on disputed territory in the South China Sea—a display of unity that China has labeled a “farce”—the two countries are teaming up again for more “goodwill games,” with the Philippines hosting this time. “The agreement to have the Philippines as venue of the next goodwill games with Vietnam is already a commitment. And we do not intend to renege on such hosting,” Philippine Navy spokesman Col. Edgard Arevalo told reporters Tuesday. “If the end is to maintain good relations and amity with a neighboring nation; and sports is one of the means to attain it, then the Navy will have to pursue it,” Arevalo, who also heads the Navy Civil Military Operations Group, added. Arevalo also said that other nations, including China, are free to join the friendly games, which will be held early next year. “Yung ating friendly relations with other forces of other nations have already been ongoing, through subject matter exchanges, joint trainings…promoting sports is another avenue…it’s their option, they can signify intent [to join],” Arevalo said. China declines However, Arevalo added, China has already sent a signal that it has no intention of joining any friendly undertakings with other countries that have claims in the South China Sea. “This early nag-signify na sila. It looks like ayon sa kanila e ayaw nila,” Arevalo said. On Monday, China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying described as a “clumsy farce” the friendly gathering between Philippines Read More …

Solon calls on VP Binay to quit Cabinet if he wants to attack PNoy, LP

A Liberal Party (LP) stalwart in the House of Representatives on Tuesday called on Vice President Jejomar Binay to quit from President Benigno Aquino III’s Cabinet if he wants to continue accusing LP of engineering reports linking Binay’s family to the P10-billion pork barrel scam. In a privilege speech, Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice said that while Binay has cleared Aquino of involvement in smear campaigns against his family, he continues to “give the go-signal” for his family and members of the opposition coalition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) to attack the President. Alleged De Lima sex videos to be ignored in confirmation hearing

The alleged sex videos of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima will not be considered during the Cabinet offiicial’s confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said Tuesday. Pimentel, Commission on Appointments (CA) justice committee chairman, said in an interview that the supposed sex videos are “immaterial” to De Lima’s confirmation. “Hindi ako papatol sa tsismis, lalo na kung alleged lang yan. Alam mo, you have to authenticate, so hindi na po tayo papasok sa ganyan,” Pimentel told reporters. He added that the alleged sex videos already will not affect De Lima’s confirmation, since the Cabinet official already has the support of majority of the CA panel’s members. “The House delegation votes as a block, and most likely they will vote for the confirmation, plus one more, that makes a majority… Totoo o hindi totoo, wala na pong bearing iyan,” Pimentel said. Whistleblower Sandra Cam was earlier quoted in media reports as saying that she received four cuts of De Lima’s supposed sex videos with her driver and bodyguard. Last week, Cam attempted to block De Lima’s confirmation citing various issues involving the justice chief, including incompetence and supposed “illicit affairs.”  De Lima, however, refused to answer questions on her personal life during her confirmation hearing.    Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte earlier asked Cam not to use the CA as a venue for “whatever ax it is you have to personally grind” against De Lima. — Andreo Calonzo/RSJ, GMA News

VP Binay shrugs off report linking daughter to ‘pork’ anomaly

Vice President Jejomar Binay has dismissed a supposed investigative report that said his daughter Makati Rep. Mar-Len Abigail Binay misused her Priority Development Assistance Fund as mere propaganda, adding he is unaffected by it since it isn’t true. “Kung talagang tumataas na ang antas ng pangliligaw, okay lang, talagang ganyan pa rin ang  ang ating politika eh,” he said in a “24 Oras” report aired Sunday evening. The supposed investigative report said Rep. Binay used her PDAF from 2007 to 2009 to pay for rallies in support of her father and his political allies, an allegation she has already denied. — JDS, GMA News

Palace: Upcoming SONA not a factor in filing of ‘pork’ charges

The president will likely mention the pork barrel scam when he addresses Congress in July, but that does not mean the filing of graft charges over the scam were rushed for the State of the Nation Address, a Palace spokesman said Sunday. Senator Jinggoy Estrada — charged with graft at the Sandiganbayan on Friday over his alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam — has said the cases against him and two other senators were rushed so the president can include it in his SONA. “Siyempre ibabandera kaming tatlo. Na naipakulong ang isang presidente, tatlong senador. Ito ay bilang patunay ng kanilang anti-corruption drive,” Estrada said in an earlier report. But Palace spokesman Herminio Coloma Jr. said the charges came from the Office of the Ombudsman and that the investigation into the scam had been going on since last year. “‘Yon pong mga usapin ay inihain sa Tanggapan ng Ombudsman bandang Agosto-Setyembre pa. Wala po sa kontrol natin kung kailan po matatapos ‘yon,” he said. Coloma noted that it took the Office of the Ombudsman until April to come out with a resolution on the first batch of graft complaints that the Department of Justice filed last year. He added the president’s upcoming SONA was not the basis for the filing of charges against Estrada, Senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Ramon Bong Revilla Jr., alleged scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles, and others. “Tila paglilihis na naman ‘yan sa tunay na usapin dito kung ‘yan pa ang ating papansinin,” Coloma said. Malacañang: Our actions do not depend on China’s

A Palace spokesperson on Sunday said that the administration is closely monitoring activities in disputed territories in the West Philippine Sea, whether or not China decides to build on one of the contested islands. “Patuloy na isinasagawa po ng pamahalaan ang mga karapat-dapat na aksyon para igiit ‘yung ating karapatan at itaguyod ‘yung pambansang interes natin. Hindi po tayo nagdedepende sa aksyon ng ibang bansa sa pagsulong ng ating pambansang interes,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in an interview aired over state-run dzRB. Coloma was reacting to a Saturday report by the South China Morning Post that China plans to put up a military base in the disputed Kalayaan Island Group. According to the SCMP report, a military base will be built after the planned expansion of an artificial island located on Fiery Cross Reef, which the Philippines calls Kagitingan Reef. The report also said that the military base will feature an airstrip and a port. The base will also have storage for military supplies. An observation post on the reef already exists, the report added. If the construction of a military base pushes through, China will have a strategic outpost in the heart of disputed territories in the South China Sea including the Spratlys and the KIG But Coloma reiterated that the Aquino believes in the peaceful resolution of the maritime row. “Sinusunod po natin kung ano ang naaayon sa pambansang interes ng Pilipinas at matibay po ‘yung ating pananalig na kinakailangang lutasin sa pamamagitan ng mapayapang paraan Read More …

PHL, Vietnamese troops drink beer, play volleyball on disputed isle

Vietnamese and Philippine troops got together on a disputed island in the South China Sea on Sunday to play soccer and volleyball—as well as drink beer—in a display of unity that will not go unnoticed in Beijing. Philippine naval officials billed the event on the Vietnamese-held island as a chance to show the world there can be harmony in the South China Sea despite a web of overlapping claims to the potentially energy-rich waters. The gathering on Southwest Cay in the Spratly archipelago also symbolizes how once-suspicious neighbours are cooperating in the face of China’s growing assertiveness in disputed waters. About 40 Philippine naval personnel sailed to the island for the day-long event, Philippine naval officials said. Coincidentally, the Philippines occupied Southwest Cay until early 1975, when troops from then South Vietnam seized it after Philippine forces sailed a couple of miles to Northeast Cay, which was under Manila’s control, for a party. The South Vietnamese were soon displaced by the communist forces of a victorious Hanoi. Besides playing soccer and volleyball, the troops held a tug-of-war competition, put on cultural shows involving singing and dancing and shared food and beer, said Philippine naval spokesman, Lieutenant-Commander Gerard Fabic. In a joint statement, the Philippine and Vietnamese navies said the sport and cultural presentations would help foster friendly ties. “This serves as a model of cooperation for other navies to emulate,” said the statement, without naming any other countries. The gathering underscores the growing cooperation between Hanoi and Manila—the two capitals Read More …

500 farmers march to DAR, demand land reform before CARPER deadline

More than 500 farmers from Quezon, Negros Occidental and Batangas trooped to the Department of Agrarian Reform Saturday after a five-day-long march to demand the fulfillment of President Benigno Aquino III’s promise to distribute lands before the agrarian reform program expires on June 30. Alberto Jayme, chairman of the farmers’ group Task Force Mapalad, said he and other agrarian reform beneficiaries have been waiting long enough for the government to give them their rightful share of agricultural land. “Kahit mahirap [ang pagmamartsa], tinitiis namin para singilin sa kanyang pangako ang ating Pangulo,” he said in a “Balitanghali” report aired Sunday. The Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), enacted in 1988, was tagged as the “centerpiece program” of Aquino’s mother, the late President Corazon Aquino. Its implementation was extended in 2009 for another five years under Republic Act No. 9700 or CARP extension with reforms (CARPER). Elvira Maglinti, a farmer in her 70s, said she continues to fight for agrarian reform despite her old age for the sake of her family. “Sinisikap ko ang paglaban para sa aking mga anak at apo,” she said. At the DAR’s office in Quezon City, the farmers were met by farmers’ groups from Mindanao, which separately staged their own protest. On Monday, the groups plan to hold a dialogue with DAR officials regarding the status of the government’s land distribution plans. Pass GARB, not CARP extension In a statement, Kabataan party-list Rep. Terry Ridon called on Congress to pass the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill (GARB) instead Read More …

PHL, Vietnam navies begin playing sports in Spratlys

Amid China’s increasing assertiveness in staking its territorial claim over almost the entire South China Sea, the navies of the Philippines and Vietnam began on Sunday their planned friendly interactions in one of the islets in the hotly-disputed Spratly Islands. In a statement, the Philippine Navy said the first PN-Vietnamese People’s Navy (VPN) personnel interaction includes cultural presentations and sports activities aimed at fostering  friendly relations between the two countries. Also, it said PN-VPN personnel interaction at the Southwest Cay Island will focus on discussions regarding interoperability and best practices in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. “[The] discussion is very timely as the south Asian region is now entering the southwest monsoon season,” it said. According state weather bureau PAGASA, southwest monsoon is characterized by heavy rainfall that may last for a week. A Reuters report published last April, said a 40-member delegation from the Philippines will head to Southwest Cay to drink beer and play volleyball with Vietnamese sailors. The islet, called by Manila as Pugad Island, used to belong to the Philippines until it was seized by Vietnamese forces in 1975, when the Philippine naval detachment stationed in the area transferred to the nearby Northeast Cay (Parola Island) for an event. Southwest Cay is now held by Vietnam, although both Manila and Hanoi continue to stake their claims over the islet, the Reuters report said. Aside from the Philippines, Vietnam and China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei also claim portions or the entirety of the Spratlys. Also in Read More …
