A cool Baguio holiday

Well, it seems there were about 800,000 visitors who also chose to go up the mountains for the holiday season. Despite the irritatingly long car ride that was caused by a number of one-way roadworks along provincial highways and bridges (paging the Department of Public Works and Highways, which failed to anticipate the terrible holiday traffic as well as the perennial road repairs), it was made worthwhile when we reached the Baguio Country Club after almost eight long hours of mostly bumper-to-bumper gridlock. Luckily, we had a wide circle of fellow Baguio lovers who braved the terrible road conditions with us — among them were family friends who shared wonderful memories of the summers of their youth, while others were new acquaintances with a common appreciation for this city that was established in 1900 by the Americans. It is currently the number-one destination for local tourists with its semi-temperate weather and scenic mountainous terrain. In a luncheon given by well-liked couple Lani and Conchitina Bernardo, we sat beside Stella Marquez-Araneta, who was being congratulated for her current crop of 2013 Bb. Ooh la La Mer: When your skin feels stressed, dab a small amount of Crème de La Mer for instant hydration. DEAR REGINA, I’ve been so busy with work lately that I haven’t been getting much rest, and unfortunately, it’s starting to show on my skin. I look so horrible in the morning! Is there anything I can do to rehab my skin, or even to just give it the illusion of health? RACH Oh, believe me, all of us career girls know the feeling! Sleepless working nights start in college and then never let up, except we’re not as young as we used to be, so it just manifests way more obviously in the way we look. (And have you noticed that it’s so much harder to pull those all-nighters now? Aging, the horror!) Birthday girl Jojo Zabarte (right) with husband Henry and siblings Louie, Tina and Joey Kierulf My dear friend Jojo Kierulf Zabarte wanted to turn a year older quietly and without much fanfare. But her nieces, Sharon Kierulf Azanza and Casey Kierulf Marty, had something snazzier in mind when they organized a surprise birthday party for their beloved aunt’s milestone birthday with the entire family in on the big secret –– from her husband Henry, siblings Joey, Tina and Louie Kierulf to the nieces and nephews here and abroad, plus the little Kierulfs who now comprise the third generation. In order to surprise Jojo, she was told that the family was organizing a “family birthday dinner somewhere at the Fort,” but on the way to the supposed location, she was told that the venue was suddenly changed to Makati at the last minute. The birthday girl was then led to the second floor of Cirkulo where her family and friends had been excitedly waiting. Once the celebrant appeared, the entire room full of almost a hundred guests and family members jubilantly shouted “Happy Birthday!” to a very surprised and stunned Jojo. During the tail end of dinner, a video presentation created by Jojo’s apos, Dani and Sam Azanza, was presented.
