Delicious discount in the Citi

Flavorful dishes from around the world at 50 percent discount: Chefs in open-theater kitchens cook for the buffet at Flavors Restaurant of Holiday Inn & Suites Makati, assuring freshness. The discount is given to Citi credit card holders until Jan. 31,2015. I am a sucker for the magic phrase “50 percent discount.” When a top-rated restaurant declares a 50 percent discount, all gourmets and gourmands rush there like mad, hungry fans. And this one thing I’ve observed: the richer people are the first  to go for cost-saving treats like this. That’s why they’re richer. So when Bea Tan of Citi Philippines invited me recently for lunch at Holiday Inn & Suites Makati, I quickly said yes. I wanted to see if the offer was really worth trying. I also wanted to check out the new Holiday Inn & Suites Makati, so conveniently connected to Glorietta Mall. I remember memorable events at the old Holiday Inn along Roxas Boulevard. It opened in 1976 together with 14 other hotels to accommodate International Monetary Fund/World Bank conference delegates, Its director for advertising and PR then, Toni Villaraza-Gregory, recalled that it became Traders Hotel in the 1990s. The amiable hotel manager Christopher Wichlan  showed us a new Holiday Inn that is an incredibly modern and relaxing urban sanctuary in the heart of a busy business center But what about the buffet at Flavors Restaurant which is offered at 50 percent off for Citi cardholders until Jan. 31, 2015?  Could it be just another buffet Read More …

Does XO mean extra old or extraordinary?

When my sister-in-law asked me what XO meant, I said, without hesitation, “Extraordinaire.” I was mistaken but not quite, because although it means “extra old,” it is really quite extraordinary. A little breathless from a rich and indulgent dinner, with your cheeks slightly flushed from copious amounts of wine, there is that ubiquitous pause as an enjoyable meal winds down, your lips still smacking sweet from a lingering dessert as it curls into a gentle smile of satisfaction. You have overindulged, and joyfully so because the food was good and the company excellent, but there is one thing missing, that perfect ending to a perfect epicurean experience, both equally meant to close a fine meal and open a spectacular late evening of meaningful conversation: cognac. I have always admired the beautiful, glinting amber liquid — inviting, temptingly glinting in the sensual afterglow of indulgence, an elegant digestive that enables the pleasures of the table to linger a little more. I don’t recall when I first tried it but I do vividly remember the rest of the moments after… long, delicious-tasting dinners with my husband, from canapés to mignardises, starting with Champagne and following through with white and red, culminating in a happy state of inebriation. We know we shouldn’t, really, as we are tottering on the border of tipsy and drunk, but it is our favorite guilty pleasure, savoring a nice cognac that splendidly puts us over the edge as we giddily stumble out of the restaurant doors as chicly Read More …

Why I can eat Mexican food forever

Tostadas de Pato: Crisp tortillas topped with slow-cooked duck mole and blueberry I have always known myself to be an old soul. Deep down inside I know that I have led many past lives. As esoteric as it may sound, it is for me the only logical explanation why I feel such an affinity for certain cultures. Not just because I am fascinated but a true, deep sense of connection — when I step foot in a foreign land and feel that, in fact, it is not so foreign. Where I feel right at home and the blood coursing through my veins resonates with the cosmic vibrations of the ground I walk on. It is in this way that I am as much Filipino as I am Mexican. My first encounter with Mexico was as a young child at the age of nine when I accompanied my mother on a trip. I remember climbing up the steps of Teotihuacan, tasting my first sip of tequila and Mezcal, plus enjoying the company of my first ever babysitter who was a young stage actress and whom I wrote to through snail mail. But nothing could beat the feeling I had when I set foot in Plaza Mayor in Mexico City some 14 years later — truly impressive, with a massive Mexican flag emblematically waving in the wind and brimming with people.  There were the doomsday sayers, native Indian dancers, witch doctors, priests, families with children blowing bubbles, young lovers, laughing teens, and Read More …

A food & culture fiesta to celebrate Quezon City’s 75th year

The Bahay Pahingaan or rest house of President Manuel L. Quezon has been relocated from its original location in New Manila to the Quezon Memorial Circle. MANILA, Philippines – Everybody  loves a fiesta and everyone deserves a treat.  But in an urban setting where work schedules are so stressful that people are generally uptight, there has to be a good excuse for an entire city to figuratively let its hair down and celebrate en masse. Quezon City has much to celebrate as it commemorates its Diamond Jubilee on Oct. 12.  There is much to be thankful for as the city moves closer to realizing the dream of its founder, President Manuel L. Quezon to become “the working man’s paradise, a home for the industrious and a springboard of every Filipino’s dreams.” Now is a good time to rediscover important historical and cultural landmarks in Quezon City. Apart from the national shrine at Quezon Memorial Circle where the remains of President Manuel L. Quezon and his wife Aurora are interred, take time out to visit their Bahay Pahingaan or rest house, which was relocated to the area from its original location in New Manila. While you’re there, take a walk in well-kept parks and visit the organic garden, a project of Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte. If you’re lucky to be around during harvest time, you can get some vegetables for free. Alternatively, visit the memorial of Melchora Aquino or Tandang Sora, who, as the “Grand Woman of the Revolution,” supported and Read More …

An authentic taste of Italy in the Walled City

The gamberetti at Raffaele in Bay Leaf Hotel: White shrimps, preserved lemon, garlic, chili and almonds If a restaurant is named after the genius that fathered the Italian pizza, one should expect that due respect be given to the creator. True enough, Raffaele, one of the newest stars on the Italian cuisine scene, rose to the challenge and, in my taste, has passed with honors. Home to the most delectable, authentic wood-fired pizza creations, Raffaele has secured a spot in the local firmament as a worthy ambassador of Italian gourmet. To label it as a pizza parlor would be an injustice. I know; I have been there and will likely be back for more. Located on the third floor of the charming Bayleaf Hotel, Raffaele (named after Raffaele Esposito, a 19th-century master pizzaoilo or pizza maker from Naples, Italy) has continually been praised since it opened two months ago. I found out why when I was invited to an informal gathering of food writers for lunch at this captivating trattoria. Our host, the president and owner of the Lyceum of the Philippines and Bayleaf Hotel, gave us a glimpse into the 60-seater chic restaurant. The feel of the place was elegant yet comfy, spacious yet warm. Natural sunlight streamed through the glass ceiling and walls and gave us a panoramic view of Intramuros’ old-world, nostalgic charm. The romantic ambience indeed served as an ideal backdrop for the food. Glancing at the special menu for the day, I realized that I Read More …
