Yes, you can make a difference in energy conservation

MANILA, Philippines – Amid bleak news of an impending power shortage this summer (and the years to come), Philips’ MayMagagawaKa campaign was recently launched to shed light on how Filipinos can start saving energy now. “A power outage can be catastrophic for the economy,” said Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno, country manager of Philips Philippines. “We lose the comfort of our homes and the stability of livelihood and business. It will impact all sectors — consequently, it will take the unified efforts of all these sectors to prevent it from happening in the future.” Jointly organized by Philips, Deutsche Investitions-und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG) Bank, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), the MayMagagawaKa campaign seeks to raise awareness and build urgency on energy conservation in the country. The campaign comes on the heels of the Malampaya maintenance shutdown, which left a 700-megawatt void in the local power grid and renewed the mounting calls for energy conservation in the country. “When it comes to power interruptions, it affects the quality of power and disrupts business,” said Henry Schumacher, executive vice president of ECCP.  “It is hoped that the measures undertaken by the private sector in joining the Interruptible Load Program (ILP), implementing energy savings, and energy efficiency investments will avoid power outages this summer.” The ILP program is a proposed set of contingency measures to manage electrical consumption amid the Malampaya shutdown, including the use of generators as an alternative power source for private Read More …

Saving newborn babies, one embrace at a time

A  mother’s first    embrace is her baby’s first breath. With these touching words, the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific recently launched the “First Embrace” campaign for early essential newborn care in Manila, with health workers and policy makers promoting the recommendations in the Action Plan for Healthy Newborn Infants in the Western Pacific Region (2014-2020). First embrace — this is probably the first time you’re hearing this. It simply refers to the skin-to-skin contact between the mother and her baby immediately after birth. It’s the first time the mother, having gone through the throes of heavy labor, happily lays her eyes on her newborn, holds her baby and feels the warmth of her baby’s embrace, those dainty little hands latched on to her while their hearts beat in perfect rhythm as one. It’s a feeling like no other — and no mother would trade it for the whole world. As it promotes natural bonding between mother and child, skin-to-skin contact has life-saving benefits for babies and improves the condition of those born premature, sick or by Caesarean section. “First Embrace is something, that if we get in place in this region, we can save 50,000 newborn lives a year and ensure a healthy start for the baby,” asserts Dr. Howard Sobel, WHO coordinator for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health. “And for every life saved, we’re also preventing 10 to 20 infections and other problems babies would have. So, we’re looking at literally half a Read More …

How I got my voice back through laughter

Haha-happy day: The author Elvie Estavillo with Melfred Hernandez, doctor to celebrity singers       Laughter Yoga is, indeed, a life-changing experience! Since I introduced LYoga in our beloved country in 2008, my perspectives have dramatically changed.  In the same breath, it has helped participants in various companies, organizations, schools, etc. where I conducted LYoga to laugh for no reason at all, thereby helping them to reduce stress, enhance efficiency, and reach optimum performance in the workplace, at home, in school, or wherever they are.  Laughter greatly helps in breaking the barriers and improving communication among people. In October last year, after a vacation abroad, I noticed a change in my voice,   which the first doctor I consulted diagnosed as allergic cough.  However, after a month of taking the prescribed medicines, the voice change persisted.  Coincidentally, I read that when there is a voice change for a month, a voice specialist must be consulted immediately. So I contacted Dr. Melfred Hernandez, the famous doctor of our celebrity singers. After a thorough checkup and an endoscopy, Dr. Hernandez suggested an operation to remove the polyps in my vocal chords.  His diagnosis:  overused vocal chords.     I was advised, before and after the operation, to absolutely not use my vocal chords. No talking!  No laughing!  Though so downhearted, I followed the doctor’s prescription to the letter. For four long, boring weeks, I communicated through a small white board, and armed myself with an eraser and a pentel pen wherever I went.  Funny, Read More …

Kitchen Stories: Chicken in Creamy Mustard Sauce

We’ve been cooking a lot of chicken dishes lately, particularly white chicken meat, which has a little less fat and fewer calories compared to dark meat. We are really trying our best to make healthier choices when it comes to our meals. Chicken breast meat has more protein and less cholesterol, so it’s the better choice. We like adding it to our salads, or serving it with some roasted or steamed vegetables and we look forward to sharing our chicken recipes with you! She Said: Our New Year’s resolution to eat healthier meals has been going well so far. We’ve been eating more fruits and vegetables and we’re slowly choosing lean meats over fatty cuts. she said: Now, we only hope to be successful when it comes to desserts! We both have a weakness for all things sweet and can’t resist chocolates, cakes and cookies, but we’re really trying our best most especially for the Lenten season. This recipe calls for skinless chicken breast fillet. The accompanying sauce is a French classic, made with mustard and heavy cream which you can substitute with milk or even plain yogurt. It makes a perfect sauce for pan-seared fish and as topping for pork tenderloin, too. Serve this with some steamed string beans and rice on the side and you’ve got yourself the perfect lunch. Enjoy! Balance and flexibility in your senior years

Seniors and the elderly should stretch two to three times a week, performing each stretch three to five times with a 20-30-second hold. Photo from quotering.com My father is an inspiration to his many friends and acquaintances. He is the epitome of a healthy nonagenarian who still drives his car, plays golf, travels, goes to office, and exercises on a daily basis. During my father’s 90th birthday some years back, one segment of the program we prepared for him was to ask a few of his friends to talk about their experiences with him. Almost all of his friends have known him for decades although they are younger than him. They are bound by their love for golf and they travel together to attend golf tournaments for senior citizens.  All of them talked about how sprite and flexible Dad is at his age. One particular friend was Dad’s roommate during one of their trips and, in his speech, he said he was astounded to see Dad doing shoulder stands as part of his exercise regimen before getting ready for the day’s golf game. How did Dad achieve flexibility and strength till his nonagenarian years? For what it is worth, there was not a time in Dad’s life that he did not do a kind of sport — basketball in his younger years, swimming and tennis in his 30s and 40s, golf in his 50s till the present, in his 90s.His exercises include a lot of stretching ( leg, body, and arm stretches), Read More …

UN: World eating too much sugar; cut to 5-10 percent of diet

LONDON — Put down the donut. And while you’re at it, skip the breakfast cereal, fruit juice, beer and ketchup. New guidelines from the World Health Organization says the world is eating too much sugar and people should slash their sugar intake to just 5 to 10 percent of their overall calories. The guidelines, released Wednesday after a year of consultations, are focused on the added sugars in processed food and those in honey, syrups and fruit juices. The advice does not apply to naturally occurring sugars in fruits, vegetables and milk. “We have solid evidence that keeping intake of (added) sugars to less than 10 percent of total energy intake reduces the risk of overweight, obesity and tooth decay,” Francesco Branca, director of WHO’s nutrition department, said in a statement. To meet the lower threshold set by the new guidelines, Americans, Europeans and others in the West would have to slash their average sugar intake by about two-thirds. In the United States, adults get about 11 to 15 percent of their calories from sugar; the figure for children is about 16 percent. In Europe, sugar intakes range from about 7 percent in Hungary and Norway to 17 percent in Britain to nearly 25 percent in Portugal. Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: Some experts said the 10 percent target was more realistic for Western countries than the lower target. They said the 5 percent of daily calories figure was aimed mostly at developing countries, where dental Read More …

Sprouts are tops in health benefits

I have a friend, a certified health buff, who sends me a bushel of alfalfa from her garden as often as she can. I’m not really a veggie lover; the one and only vegetable I have an enduring relationship with is chocolate (which comes from cacao beans and is, therefore, legally a veggie). Although green is my favorite color, I cringe at the sight of greens. But well-meaning people, like my alfalfa pusher of a friend, try to get me to get more greens into my colorless, lackluster diet.  Alfalfa can be a good fresh start; after all, alfalfa in Arabic means father of plants. Growing in warmer temperate climates, it is a powerhouse of nutrition as it sends its roots down 20 or so feet into the ground and brings up the minerals that you won’t find on the surface.  See, there’s nothing superficial about this plant. Fact is, alfalfa is considered the richest land source of trace minerals and is rich in vitamins A, C, E, and zinc. The World’s Healthiest Food gives this down-to-earth explanation as to what makes sprouts so nutritious: “[M]any of the foods we eat begin their plant life as sprouts. Sprouting is simply the way that a seed cracks open for the first time and sends a root or a leaf stalk poking upward out of the soil and into the open air. Because the sprouting stage of growth is so unique in the life of a plant, there has been special interest Read More …

Celebrity Sheep: Healthy due to calmness

Keith Urban: The cool American Idol judge works out with wife Nicole Kidman in a gym near their Nashville home.   Sheep are generally calm, serene, and gentle. They are said to be mild-mannered, shy, sympathetic, amicable, good-hearted, and just. The calmness of sheep makes them less stressed, which has positive effects on their health and well-being. It was also observed that sheep love fresh and organic produce. Intrigued, I looked into the health and lifestyle of seven US celebrities born in the Year of the Sheep (2015 is the Year of the Wood Sheep). Fire Sheep (1907, 1967) according to www.chinahighlights.com are “amicable, frank and honest, always making everything clean and tidy, and are seldom disliked by others. They are always ready to help their friends, disregarding their own personal gains or losses, so they are very popular. As far as marriage is concerned, they are not suited to getting married early on.” • Vin Diesel (born July 18, 1967 in New York) is best known for his role as Riddick in The Chronicles of Riddick trilogy from 2001 to 2013 and as Dominic Toretto in The Fast and The Furious film series from 2001 to the present. He also acts as producer in both film franchises. Men’s Health UK wrote “Via his Facebook page — third in popularity behind Michael Jackson’s and Barack Obama’s — Diesel keeps in regular contact with people in every corner of the world, delivering his thoughts on love, peace, and energy. Healed by a mother’s love

Our Lady of Lourdes: No prayers are left unanswered. Three days before Valentine’s Day, Catholics celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes. The first Lourdes Apparition of Our Lady to St. Bernadette was on February 11, 1858. While healing and other miracles about Lourdes in France are well-known, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes (NSOLL) in Kanlaon, Quezon City is like a well-kept secret. A confessed Marian devotee, I and my family went to Lourdes (believe it or not, I made my husband drive all the way from Paris, which we now call his penitential drive) to thank her for her powerful intercession. After reading a book about all the answered prayers, my daughter and I started sending prayer requests online to www.PrayerRequest.eu. She has never failed a single request and when I thought I would be turned down for the first time, the positive response happened after a few months. My friend Tess Arvisu has been an active parishioner of NSOLL for several years now and has been diligently inviting us every year to visit the shrine. We were glad we finally went this year. We managed to arrive in time for the last Mass despite the heavy traffic. We wondered why the pews were still full and why no one left after the Mass. As minutes went by, more and more people arrived, filling up the church. Excitement built up and we noticed two out of five devotees have their cameras, tablets, and Android Read More …
