Sales boost puts Bentley on track for record year

CREWE, England – Nine months in to 2014 and Bentley’s aim of having a record breaking year is firmly on track. Global deliveries increased by 19 percent, to 7,786 cars, up from 6,516 cars in the same period in 2013, Bentley’s four key regions, Americas, China, Europe including the UK, and Middle East all saw strong performance, with the Americas retaining its position as Bentley’s number one market, but with China posting strong growth to close the gap. New models drove this international success, with the Continental GT V8 S coupe and convertible and Flying Spur V8 entering the market. Commenting on the results, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Kevin Rose, said: “We said at the start of the year that 2014 would be a record breaking year for Bentley and we are firmly on track to deliver on our promise. Certain markets are tough, as other luxury car brands can testify, but with our three model lines delivering a perfect blend of luxury and performance, alongside the international appeal that we have as a brand, it will ensure 2014 will go down as our best ever year.” Remaining in Bentley’s number one position, the Americas delivered 2,107 cars, 4 percent up on the first nine months of the 2013 performance of 2,022 cars. Bentley’s sales in China remained solid in a less than buoyant market—1,959 cars were delivered in the first nine months of 2014, against 1,264 cars in 2013. A strong German market Read More …

Of Indian cars and Chinese cars (and yes, of traffic once again)

Two weeks ago, I wrote a column about traffic here and in other parts of the world that I had the good fortune (misfortune?) to experience. I wrote that other cities—even those with smaller populations and much less corruption (perceived or otherwise) from government or from its traffic enforcers—had as much or even worse traffic levels as we do. Some, like LA, didn’t have a subway or a mass transport system like our MRT; but they had better and more disciplined drivers and much better law enforcement. Paris had few buses but had a highly efficient underground metro system. Still, those two megacities experienced gridlocked traffic just as heavily and regularly as we Manilans do. But I delve into this topic once again because I have just come from India. It was my first trip to India, and for those who have been there (particularly in New Delhi or Mumbai, the latter of which I have just returned from), you probably know what I will be talking about. Those Indians know traffic. A 20-minute 5-kilometer drive can turn into an hour-long snooze fest if you hit the road at the wrong time. But more than just seething collectively in stationary agony, they put the pedal to the metal practically every chance they get—once the lights turn green. Then it’s cutting from one lane to another (oftentimes without warning), tailgating so closely that one car seems like it’s towing another at high speed, and overtaking like there’s no tomorrow. And lots Read More …

The Shakedown: Taking Nissan’s all-new X-Trail up to Baguio

MANILA, Philippines – Reaching the flag-off point at Nissan North EDSA for our drive up to Baguio, I noted that there was something about seeing 17 X-Trails parked side by side that leaves you in awe. It’s a show of strength—no other car manufacturer in recent memory has had this massive convoy for a driving event. Next, your eyes focus on a single X-Trail and then it hits you: it’s a handsome thing. Whereas the first and second-generation X-Trails looked boxy and upright, this new one is sexy sleek with soft, flowing contours and just the right amount of curves and lines. It contains all the styling elements that tie it in with Nissan’s latest models like the Sylphy and Altima. Around the X-Trail, there’s a good amount of chrome embellishments, headlined by the V-Motion grille. Flanking the grille is a pair of halogen headlights with boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights which are echoed in the rear lamp’s lighting signature. Across the line, the X-Trail rides on 17-inch alloys with fuel-efficient Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max 225/65R17 tires. One single nitpick though: the rear hatch handle could have been integrated into the panel above the license plate, like most crossovers, instead of just appearing a couple of inches above the bumper. After a short briefing (and the mandatory photo op), it’s time to board the cars. Stepping inside the X-Trail reveals a dramatic departure from previous-generation models. The overall look and feel is certainly more premium with aluminum, carbon fiber, and Read More …

Mazda PH posts highest sales qtr

MANILA, Philippines – Mazda Philippines registered its best sales month on record under Berjaya Auto Philippines Inc, and best sales quarter ever for Mazda in the Philippines—all these on top of a 49 percent year-to-date year-over-year growth. Aside from the new monthly record of 355 units sold for September, this achievement also sets a new best for Mazda vehicle sales in the Philippines as sales from January to September this year have already surpassed 2013’s full year total. Moreover, the sales figures from each of the months of May to September 2014 reveal that these are also the best consecutive five-month performance by far for the Mazda brand. “Mazda’s growing sales numbers is a reflection of BAP’s commitment to the brand and its loyal customers,” says BAP president and CEO, Steven Tan. He adds, “Seeing how strong the demand is for our SKYACTIV technology and KODO-designed vehicles, we are even more devoted to bring in the latest brand new Mazda units on the road so that more people can enjoy Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom spirit.” Starting with the new Mazda6 executive sedan last year, followed closely by the CX5 AWD Sport and CX5 PRO crossovers, and recently the all new Mazda3 compact car—the response from the customers has exponentially grown the brand since BAP started its operations more than a year ago. With 962 units sold, the sales numbers for the most recent quarter—Q3 2014—is the highest for a sales quarter in Mazda Philippines’s history. The all-new Mazda3 is the bestselling Mazda, Read More …

Jaguar unleashes sexy, new F-Type Coupé

MANILA, Philippines – Last Thursday was a zestful day for Jaguar enthusiasts, as Jaguar Cars, Inc. (JCI) – the exclusive distributor of Jaguar vehicles in the country – launched the much-coveted Jaguar F-type Coupé in the Philippines.  The  F-type Coupé is now available for the tasteful driver to experience, and comes in 2 variants: The F-type S, that comes with a 380HP, 3L supercharged v6 engine; and the F-type R, which comes with a more powerful 550HP, 5L supercharged v8 engine. Also present at the media unveil was lovely Jaguar brand ambassador Georgina Wilson. “Visual appeal is fundamental to Jaguar and the F-type Coupé builds on the design of the stunning C-X16 concept sports Coupé and the F-type convertible, which won the 2013 World Car Design of the Year Award,” explained JCI President and Chairman Wellington Soong at the launch event. The new, all-aluminum F-type Coupé is the most torsionally rigid production car Jaguar has ever built. Maintaining the car’s low mass albeit preserving its extremely rigid body was key to its sporty driving dynamic. Equally impressive was how the brand’s design vision was not compromised by the engineers’ efforts to exploit the car’s physics. Clearly, there is a lack of B-pillars in this car, to establish a low roofline and exude a dramatically sleek body. This was achieved by using a high-strength, hydro-formed aluminum alloy beam from the front of the A-pillar to the back of the D-pillar; running through the door opening line and towards the rear quarter Read More …

Downsizing out of the box

MANILA, Philippines – I was walking along the parking lot of a mall in Makati when I came across two unlikely cars: a gleaming 1976 Colt Lancer L-Type and an equally pristine 1979 Ford Escort parked right across each other. There being no old school car show or car club meet ongoing at that mall, I chalked it up to coincidence that two well-kept compact sedans from the ‘70s would find themselves parked near each other at the exact same moment.  Then it hit me. Compact. The Escort and Lancer L-Type were the iconic compact sedans of their time. But parked among a sea of late-model Civics, Altises, and Elantras—likewise compact sedans—I was struck by the vast difference in sizes between the cars of two different eras. The Escort and L-Type were dwarfed by their contemporary brethren. The L-Type, in particular, seemed tiny–seemingly smaller and narrower than even a current Ford Fiesta, which is now classified as a subcompact car. What happened? Did we, as human occupants of these cars, double in size? I’d like to think not. But even if obesity is more a concern now than three decades ago, it’s more due to better public awareness than the fact that the population is growing in width. Well, at least not as fast as our cars are growing and gaining weight. Thirty years ago a car like a Corolla or a Lancer would weigh 1,800 to 2,000 pounds. Today they’d weigh at least 2,200 pounds and can tip the Read More …

Petron Value Card now 2M strong

MANILA, Philippines – Petron Value Card, dubbed as the ultimate motorist loyalty card, now has over 2-million cardholders nationwide. The lucky 2-millionth member, Charlie Toh of Davao City, was recognized in simple ceremonies at the Petron Bajada station during Davao’s Kadayawan Festival. Born and raised in Davao, the 49-year old copra trader is married with four children. He says he signed up for Petron Value Card because, “It has a good program. You can earn points and redeem for free fuel. It also has the free towing service, free personal accident insurance and discounts at partner establishments nationwide.” According to Toh, he uses only Petron fuels for all his vehicles, whether for the truck and motorcycles used for his business, or for his personal/family vehicles.
