Solignum offers a range of products against termite infestation at home. MANILA, Philippines – Summer is the best time to prepare your home defense against termite attacks. There’s still a lot of time before the termites start swarming. It’s better to prepare for any termite attack now than to regret it later. For maximum protection against termite infestation, it’s best to use Solignum Wood Preservative from the leading and trusted wood preservatives for more than 100 years. The Solignum wood preservative is effective against termites, wood-boring insects, and fungi — three known pests that may cause irreversible and costly damage to homes if they are not stopped in time. Another breakthrough is the introduction of Solignum Interior, the same tried, tested and trusted Solignum but now in a reduced odor formula, making it very convenient to use inside the house. Together with Solignum wood preservative, there is Soilguard odorless soil termiticide that creates a barrier to prevent termites from entering the structure. Subterranean termites may live under the soil around your house and they are able to build passageways called “mud tubes” from their colony underground to your house. Treating the soil around your house with Soilguard will prevent subterranean termites from attacking your home. Soilguard creates a barrier in the soil that will kill any termites that come into contact with it. It is formulated to be less hazardous to humans, animals, and the environment. The DPWH promptly erected steel frames to serve as temporary support to the fire-damaged Quezon Bridge in Manila. MANILA, Philippines – Last April 10, a fire damaged the old Quezon Bridge in Manila, leaving six people injured and at least 70 families homeless. Frey-Fil Corp., licensee of Freyssinet International Manila Inc. (FMI), quickly sent a team of experts, including an international consultant, to inspect the damage caused by the fire. The team examined the damage twice to accurately ascertain the extent of damage in coordination with the local government and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Aside from the obvious need for water jetting and repainting, the team also pinpointed certain repairs that need to be made. The DPWH also promptly conducted its own inspection and would erect steel frames in the meantime. Freyssinet has offered to assist the DPWH in the process. “Back then, they did not have the technology to allow bridges space to flex during seismic activity,” explained Frey-FiI project director Ron Brinkman. “Fortunately, now we do. In this way, we will also be able to preserve the heritage of these bridges, which have stood the test of time. All this is in keeping with the new Seismic Code,” Brinkman said. Brinkman was referring to Freyssinet’s proprietary design of dampers which act like shock absorbers and disperse the vibrations of seismic activity, and help bridges and buildings retain structural integrity and avoid the damage caused by earthquakes and similar phenomena. MANILA, Philippines – Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, is supporting the Department of Health (DOH) for the effective establishment and implementation of a National Laboratory-Based Surveillance for Dengue at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) through the Asian Foundation for Tropical Medicine Inc. (AFTMI). The joint agreement will substantially augment the information on dengue and will ultimately enhance knowledge and awareness throughout the Philippines. The allocated funds from Sanofi Pasteur — spanning across three years — will cover the training of subnational laboratory staff in dengue test methodology and practices and its quality assurance, and set up and training of staff at 20 sentinel sites for specimen collection and transport. This partnership shall significantly contribute and complement the efforts of the DOH in addressing dengue. “It is our privilege to be a partner of the DOH and RITM for an initiative that will further expand the dengue surveillance system in the Philippines. Right: Neurobion products. MANILA, Philippines – Despite its debilitating effects on a person’s life, neuropathy remains an unrecognized and underestimated condition hounding many Filipinos now, according to experts. Dr. Gio Barangan, medical director of the Merck Inc. Philippines, said many Filipinos continue to suffer from neuropathy although this could be prevented primarily by taking vitamins B1, B6 and B12 and by observing a healthy lifestyle. “Neuropathy is the disease of the nerves which are like the electrical power lines that bring electricity to the different parts of our body. The main reason for developing neuropathy is vitamin B deficiency,” he said in a press briefing last Monday. The other causes are diabetes, malnutrition, and renal diseases that stemmed from high intake of alcohol. Barangan cautioned that vegetarians are prone to developing neuropathy because they do not eat meat that is rich in vitamin B12. “Basically, vitamin B complex — composed of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 — are water soluble vitamins. We have to replenish them every day and we can do that by eating foods that are rich in these vitamins… and by taking vitamin B,” he added. MANILA, Philippines – The national government recently released its Open Data Philippines (ODP) Action Plan 2014-2016 as part of the Aquino administration’s commitment “to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.” The action plan was released more than a month after the government launched the ODP website (www.data.gov.ph), which seeks to provide the public with up-to-date government data ranging from enrollment in schools to budget information. “None of us should make the mistake of thinking that Open Data Philippines stops at being a repository of data. Its very name says otherwise. Opening data is about making statistics understandable, through the use of reader-friendly visualizations,” President Aquino said during the launch. The action plan defines the task of the ODP Task Force, which is composed of the office of the presidential spokesperson, the Department of Budget and Management, and the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office. It also has an introduction to the open government data portal and will serve as a blueprint for the open data program until 2016. “As the Philippines is one of the eight founding member-governments of the Open Government Partnership, the country finds itself in a perfect position to further concretize its commitments to the OGP through this program,” read the 25-page action plan. John Sayers, president of GSK Consumer Healthcare, Asia-Pacific and Latin America MANILA, Philippines – About four years ago, 32-year-old bank executive John Michael Tang was rushed to the hospital due to burning fever, vomiting, and loss of appetite. He was diagnosed to have fatty liver. Also known as “hepatic steatosis,” fatty liver is one of the most common liver diseases, affecting millions worldwide. And while many doctors often disregard it as an innocuous condition, the associated health risks warrant attention. “People with fatty liver have a shorter lifespan, with the most common cause of death being cardiovascular disease, usually from heart attacks and strokes. They need to be screened for diabetes, heart disease, elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure, among other conditions,” said Dr. Eternity Labio, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at the Center for Liver Disease Management and Transplantation of the Medical City and Asian Hospital. Labio said fatty liver disease comes in two types: the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). For non-drinkers, the condition is common particularly among those who are overweight, have diabetes and with high cholesterol levels. In Tang’s case, the doctor pointed to his weight, diet and lifestyle as the causes for the condition, and he concurred: “My family loves to eat and I used to drink a lot. I eat whatever I want. I never thought of myself as fat, so I never controlled what I ate before.” But at 274 pounds, he was clearly overweight. After his hospitalization, Read More …
Figure 1. NDRRMC and media reported landslides and floods, as of NDRRMC SitRep #9, Jan. 16, 2014. Background A low-pressure area (LPA) has been dumping heavy rains over Mindanao and parts of the Visayas since Jan. 10. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), local DRRM councils and the media have reported numerous landslides and flashfloods resulting from the continuous rainfall. As of the NDRRMC report on the night of Jan. 16, the effects of the LPA had claimed over 31 lives, while seven people were missing and 36 had been injured. The heavy, continuous rainfall has affected around 376,000 people (approximately 79,000 families). Thousands of families from Regions 10, 11 and Caraga have been evacuated and are being served by relief operations. Several local government units (LGUs) have declared a state of calamity. However, according to the DPWH, many roads are still impassable due to the damages caused by landslide debris and floods, which washed out and completely destroyed some bridges along the Surigao del Sur-Davao Oriental Coastal Road, among many other roads. Classes and flights were suspended or cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. The Libuganon River and Saug River swelled from the immense amount of runoff. Communities and households near the rising Magpayang River were evacuated. Southern Leyte, recently devastated by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) two months ago was also affected by the LPA, with reported landslides in Sogod municipality.
