Doctors were still the highest paid overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) while the engineering sector posted more job opportunities, a report on Wednesday showed.

Filipino doctors overseas received a monthly income of P111,620, according to WorkAbroad.ph’s 2016 overseas salary report.

Engineering-related positions were the most in demand with 30,972 career opportunities posted on the jobs board website.

With monthly salary ranging from P55,000 to P90,000, other high paying specializations include process design and control, public relations or communications, aviation or aircraft maintainance, legal services, education quality control, IT-related, engineering related, and architecture or interior design.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was the highest paying country in terms of jobs in the healthcare industry. A doctor in UAE may get as high as P253,826 per month.

Following UAE were Qatar and Canada with focus on aviation industry and nurse/medical support sector, respectively.

Although healthcare specialists receive the highest pay, the positions available are not as many as in other fields. The job portal also observed a drop in the average monthly pay in the industry.

“In 2015 the average monthly salary of healthcare professional is about P120,000. Now it’s about P111,000, probably because of the jobs that were advertised now,” said Rhea Suiza, business unit manager of WorkAbroad.ph. RAM

Arrest warrant out for suspects in Sabah kidnapping—PH embassy

The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur confirmed that six of the 23 suspects in the kidnappings cases in the waters off Sabah already have arrest warrants. The Filipino suspects are reportedly being pursued in “the hinterlands of Sulu and Basilan provinces.” Earlier this month, President Rodrigo Duterte went to Malaysia to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the two agreed to work together to solve the kidnapping incidents in the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas. “Philippine authorities welcomes any information their Malaysian counterparts may have that would lead to the arrest of these wanted individuals,” the Embassy said. The six suspects with arrest warrants are Apo Mike (also known as Majan Sahidjuan), Hatib Hayan (aka Sawadjaan), Alden Bagde (aka Sayning), Muamar Askali (aka Abu Rami), Idang Susukan and Alhabsy Misaya. Philippine forces have been able to arrest and kill other suspects earlier named by Malaysian authorities. One of them is Khadafy, who is now detained in the Zamboanga Del Norte Provincial Jail. The list of 23 kidnapping suspects were from Malaysia’s Eastern Sabah Security Command. There have been several reports in the past of fishermen and foreign tourists abducted by armed men in Sabah waters. A blooming bromance? Duterte gushes over Putin

President Rodrigo Duterte and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet for the first time during a bilateral meeting at the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru on November 19. ROBINSON NIÑAL JR./ Presidential Photo LIMA, Peru—A bromance seems to have bloomed between President Rodrigo Duterte and his hero Russian President Vladimir Putin—at least judging by the way the former waxed poetic about their first meeting. Sounding like a starstruck schoolboy who just met his idol, the Philippine leader gushed about his initial interactions with Putin on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit here. “It was like we have known each other for a long time and even [by] the way we pat each other’s hand in a handshake,” Duterte said of his first bilateral meeting with the Russian strongman. READ: Putin to Duterte:  ‘I feel you’ At one of the side events with the Apec leaders, he recalled having a conversation with a Vietnam official who thanked him for the release of Vietnamese fishermen apprehended in Philippine waters. “When I finally sat down, I found out that President Putin was on my left side, so we shook hands,” he said. “And then after I shook his hands again and I finally said ‘I [will] go ahead.’ He gestured to me, ‘don’t forget to visit Russia,’” Duterte recalled. Like with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the only other leader he had a bilateral meeting with, he said he had become “fast friends” with the Read More …

Gervy Alota was quoted as saying. SCREENGRAB from United States Embassy in Manila’s Facebook page The United States Embassy in Manila posted on Facebook old photos of its relief operations in Zamboanga siege in 2013. “Remember when the US military and USAID Philippines distributed a total of 10,000 units of bottled water, sleeping mats, blankets, tooth brushes, toothpaste, buckets, and canned goods to provide relief and emergency to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Zamboanga City in 2013 We were here to help. Duterte ‘recalibrating’ PH foreign policy—Dominguez

President Rodrigo Duterte is not changing but is just “recalibrating” the country’s foreign policy, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III told a Senate hearing on Monday. Dominguez issued this clarification during the hearing of the Senate committee on finance when its chair, Senator Loren Legarda, asked about the impact of any change in foreign policy under the new administration amid the President’s pronouncements that he would build next year new alliances with China and Russia. READ: Duterte seeks alliances with China and Russia “Will our changing foreign policy, assuming there is any change, also affect or change our diplomacy insofar as finance and economics is concerned?” Legarda asked. “Meaning, it’s good to be tapping a big market for our goods which is China and even Russia and they also have money to be able to help us. So do we see a more robust economic, business relationship with our nation neighbor with whom there is a territorial dispute and possible market for our goods which is Russia farther away but which has been largely untapped?” she further asked. Responding to the queries, Dominguez said: “I would not say the foreign policy is changing, I think it’s just being recalibrated so that were are more open to other markets.” He noted, for instance, the President’s plan to call for a Constitutional Convention to open investment areas to more foreign participation with the exception of land ownership. “The President has indicated to us that he’d like to strengthen and exploit opportunities, as you Read More …

Brussels may scrap royal visit after Duterte ‘Hitler’ remarks

President Rodrigo Duterte. AP FILE PHOTO Brussels is now thinking twice whether or not to push through with its scheduled royal visit to the Philippines next year, according to a report by The Brussels Times. The report came after President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial remarks that drew parallels with Adolf Hitler’s killing of Jews during the Holocaust and his repeated tirades against the European Union and the United Nations on the issue of human rights amid his administration’s bloody war on drugs. Brussels State Secretary for External Trade Cécile Jodogne told La Libre Belgique that “it will be difficult to ensure” that the trade mission to be supposedly led by Princess Astrid to the Philippines in May 2017 would go ahead. The report said Jodogne sent an email to the Agency for External Trade’s partners on Friday requesting for an emergency meeting “to discuss whether the royal visit to the Philippines should still go ahead.” “I will ask for the visit to be moved to a different country. If Federal authorities and the two other regions don’t agree, Brussels will not send a political representative. I’m not saying no-one should go to the Philippines at all, but the problem right now is timing,” she was quoted as saying. Duterte on Friday said he would be “happy to slaughter” three million drug addicts in the Philippines by himself in the same way that Hitler had murdered millions of Jews before and during the Second World War. President Rodrigo Duterte. JOAN BONDOC/INQUIRER FILE PHOTO A day after President Rodrigo Duterte invited the United Nations and the European Union to probe the alleged extrajudicial killings in his war against illegal drugs, he said United States President Barack Obama is also welcome to come to the country. “So, I would be inviting the human rights commission, the EU, Obama if he wants to come here, Ban Ki-Moon,” he said on Friday during a speech at the Police Regional Office in General Santos City. On Thursday, Duterte said he invited UN’s chief Ban Ki-Moon and the EU to come to the Philippines and investigate the alleged extrajudicial killings amid his relentless war on illegal drugs. READ: Duterte: UN chief, EU may come to PH, but… The President said he has ordered Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea to write the letter of invitation to the UN and EU. But he said his invitation “could not be a one-way affair.” After giving them the “right to be heard,” they must also answer questions from him. He then challenged them to a debate. “I will take on them one by one in an open forum.  You can use the Senate or (the) Folk Arts (Theater), whatever. Everybody will be invited. All of you can watch how I trample on them,” he said. “They could ask all the questions they want,” he said, but was quick to add that he would also ask them questions. Duterte earlier slammed the UN and the EU for criticizing Read More …

No takers for diplomatic posts? Not true, says DFA

DFA spokesman Charles Jose. AP FILE PHOTO The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) clarified reports that there are no takers for diplomatic posts amid the series of “off-the-cuff” statements of President Rodrigo Duterte cursing US President Barack Obama and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that require massive diplomatic mending of fences with allies and neighbors. DFA spokesman Charles Jose said the report is not true but admitted so far it was only Ambassador Marciano Paynor who accepted the offer to become Philippine ambassador to United States. READ: Paynor named PH ambassador to US “Ambassador Paynor was recently appointed by President Duterte to head our post in Washington DC,” said Jose in a press briefing on Wednesday. Former Senate President Edgardo Angara, on the other hand, confirmed that he was offered the post as ambassador to US but he declined. “Yes, it (US post) was offered to me but I declined. Prior, I was offered to head our embassy in United Kingdom and then Spain,” said senator Angara in a chance interview. Angara said he is open to “provide policy advice to the DFA” as a consultant but not to work as ambassador. However, Jose said there are still no appointments of new ambassadors to key diplomatic posts such as United Kingdom and China. “We don’t have the names yet as of this time,” he said. Earlier, Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. has submitted three names for possible appointment as Philippine ambassador to the US including Angara, well-known businessman Ricardo Delgado and Read More …
