MANILA, Philippines – The SM Group of Henry Sy is mapping out a plan to build a “future city,” on top of its existing empire of malls and banks in the country, with investments seen reaching over P100 billion for two reclamation projects in Parañaque and Pasay. Hans T. Sy, president of SM Prime Holdings Inc., said the conglomerate intends to integrate the Pasay and Parañaque reclamation projects which will have a combined area of 600 hectares. Sy said the SM Group is currently preparing a master plan for the projects, due within the next three to six months. “Preferably, we want the projects to be integrated so that the outcome will be beautiful. We’re trying to build a future city there. It has to be something different and more attractive,” he said. Through the master plan, Sy said the company would show what can be done in the areas and at the same time clear out environmental issues the project may raise. He said the SM Group has contracted New-York listed firm Aecom Technology Corp., one of the world’s largest engineering companies, for the project’s master planning. MANILA, Philippines – The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) seeks to recover the costs of rehabilitation and repair of its facilities incurred as a result of force majeure events such as bombing incidents and typhoons. In a filing before the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), NGCP sought to recover costs it incurred because of a bombing incident on its facilities in Mindanao and two destructive typhoons that hit the country in October last year. “On Sept. 1 and 26, 2013, NGCP’s transmission assets and other related facilities in the provinces of Maguindanao and Cotabato were damaged due to the bombings perpetrated by lawless elements, respectively,” NGCP said. On Oct. 11-13, Typhoon Santi entered the Philippine area of responsibility with maximum winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gustiness of 185 kph. Due to its intensity and heavy rainfall, NGCP’s transmission assets and other related facilities in the North Luzon area were damaged, it also said in its application. Typhoon Vinta, meanwhile, hit in Oct. 31 and also damaged NGCP’s transmission assets and other related facilities. As a result, NGCP said it spent P3.2 million due to the sabotage incident, P2.6 million for landslide damage as a result of heavy rains, P2.3 million due to Santi and P1.6 million due to Vinta for a total cost of P9.8 million. MANILA, Philippines – In reference to the article published on Aug. 27 regarding the Energy Regulatory Commission’s refund order on National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, please note that the ERC ordered the NGCP to refund its customers in Mindanao P12 million and not P12 billion as erroneously reported. Thus, NGCP can implement the refund order by paying P1.05 million, not P1.05 billion, a month. We apologize for the typo error.
MANILA, Philippines – The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the country’s power transmission operator, has warned that power outages may persist in certain areas in the country due to right-of-way (ROW) problems. In Mindanao, for instance, the 26.5-kilometer Baloi-Marawi 69-kilovolt line in Lanao del Norte, which transmit electricity to Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative and the Mindanao State University (MSU), frequently trips due to vegetation growing beneath it. Residents in the area have continuously planted trees along the line, which have caused tripping of power. In June alone, the transmission line tripped eight times, for a period ranging from 40 minutes to almost five hours, NGCP president and chief executive officer Henry Sy Jr. said. “This is because of the ROW violators,” he said. The grid operator lamented that some landowners deliberately plant along the path of the transmission lines to be able to demand unreasonable amounts from NGCP in exchange for permission to enter their properties for line maintenance. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 This results in longer maintenance period, Sy said. “ROW violations add to our maintenance cost because we have to clear-up the lines before we maintain or repair it. Our personnel also have to extend working hours to finish these activities,” Sy said. He appealed to local government units to talk to the landowners and seek their cooperation. “Local government units will be a big help to us by talking to these landowners to allow us to enter their properties Read More …
