PNoy to VP Binay: Give right facts in counter-SONA

President Aquino graces the 111th Anniversary of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) at the agency’s main office in Quezon City. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — President Benigno Aquino III on Monday challenged Vice President Jejomar Binay to stick to the facts when he delivers his speech countering Aquino’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) later in the afternoon. “One would hope he would honor his pledge to serve people, and part of that is giving them the right information,” Aquino told reporters ahead of Binay’s speech. The President nevertheless said that his critics are “free to speak their minds.” Aquino also maintained that the facts he presented in his sixth and final state address before Congress last week depicted the Philippines’ true state. “Walang akong tradisyon o record na nagsisinungaling kanino man. I stand by what I said,” he said. Binay, whose expected run for the presidency next year is being hounded by allegations of corruption, has resigned from Aquino’s Cabinet and since then has become a critic of the administration. Mar ‘highly qualified’, Jinggoy says

DILG Secretary Mar Roxas III (left) chats with Senators Grace Poe-Llamanzares, JV Ejercito, and Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the Senate deliberation on the 2015 budget of the Department of Interior and Local Government on Monday, November 24. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — After attending his bail hearing at the Sandiganbayan 5th Division for his plunder case, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada told reporters that Interior Secretary Mar Roxas is highly qualified to run for president. The detained senator, however, said that the Estradas are not throwing their support behind anyone yet. “I do not want to pre-empt President Estrada,” said Sen Estrada, referring to his father, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada. The younger Estrada said Vice President Jejomar Binay, Sen. Grace Poe and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte are also qualified candidates for the 2016. As for his own political plan, Estrada said he will focus first on his pork barrel scam cases. Meantime, at the continuation of the bail hearing for Estrada, National Bureau of Investigation special investigator Dario Sabinalo was presented by the prosecution as an expert on cybercrime. He narrated his numerous trainings in the US with software companies since he started working at the NBI in 2003. The prosecution panel offered his testimony on the files of whistleblower Benhur Luy which it claims were created on the dates indicated and have not been modified. Due to lack of time, the hearing will continue Tuesday. At the start of the hearing, 5th Division Chair Roland Jurado announced that aside from Read More …

Roxas to resign; eyes transition already: Palace

President Aquino raises the hand of DILG Secretary Mar Roxas to the shower of confetti after Aquino endorsed Roxas for the presidential race at the Club Filipino in Greenhills on Friday. Aquino cited Roxas’ record and pointed to him as the best bet to continue the “Daang Matuwid” (Straight Path). (MNS photo) (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday said that Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II will resign from his post following an endorsement from President Benigno Aquino III for the 2016 presidential elections. “Of course, that is a given. He will not stay in office so he won’t be accused of taking advantage of his position. Certainly, he will not do that,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said over state-run Radyo ng Bayan. “What he is actually preparing for is the transition already to whoever will lead the DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) next,” she explained. Valte, however, could not confirm who will replace the Interior Secretary. Roxas is expected to recommend names for the position. Valte said Roxas wants to have a smooth transition, especially for the priority projects of the DILG, including the Oplan Lambat Sibat of the Philippine National Police. Members of the opposition have already called for the resignation of Roxas, who was praised by Aquino on Friday for his integrity. (MNS)

Duterte reacts to Aquino’s endorsement of Mar

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte MANILA (Mabuhay) – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he is happy for Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas after President Benigno Aquino III endorsed his presidential bid for the 2016 elections. “I’m happy for him, I hope he makes it,” Duterte said. The mayor, however, declined to name who he will support in the 2016 elections, as both Vice-President Jejomar Binay and Senator Grace Poe are his friends. “If there is really no need for me to come out and support a particular candidate, I’d rather not,” he said. “Everytime you mention a name you always disappoint the other guy,” he explained. Duterte reiterated anew that he is not running for president in 2016. The mayor was the guest speaker last night at a gathering of the Chamber of Commerce in Davao. (MNS)

Philippines Haiyan rebuilding ‘inadequate’, says UN

President Benigno S. Aquino III inspects the facilities of the temporary shelter at the Cogon Relocation Site in Barangay Cogon, Guiuan during the visit to the province of Eastern Samar on Friday (November 07). More than 200 Yolanda survivors will benefit from the 133 housing units. It was in Guiuan where super typhoon Yolanda, the strongest typhoon ever recorded, made its first landfall on November 08, 2013. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The Philippines has not done enough to rebuild after Super Typhoon Haiyan, as thousands remain in shanties without power or water for nearly two years, a United Nations representative said Saturday. Many storm survivors in the central region have had to endure relocating to evacuation camps up to three times since Haiyan struck in 2013, and the sub-standard housing leaves them vulnerable to future typhoons, said Chaloka Beyani, UN special rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons. “While the government is to be commended in terms of its immediate responses, its attention to ensuring sustainable durable solutions for IDPs (internally displaced persons) remains inadequate to date,” Beyani said in a statement posted on the UN website. Beyani was in the Philippines in late July to check on the government’s handling of people displaced by Haiyan and by fighting between the military and Muslim rebels in the south. Aside from falling short of safety standards, the wood-and-tin “bunkhouses” also leave women and girls vulnerable to sexual abuse and early pregnancy, Beyani said. The box-like shanties also rob Read More …

Bongbong, among 6 choices for Binay’s running mate, says UNA

Vice President Jejomar Binay and Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla raise their hands during the covenant signing between United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) and Partido Magdalo at Kawit Cavite on Thursday. Remulla expressed support for Binay’s candidacy for president in the 2016 elections. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is among six individuals being considered as Vice President Jejomar Binay’s running mate in the 2016 presidential elections, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) confirmed Saturday. “I will have to admit, kasi lumabas na yan, na kasama siya,” UNA interim president and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said. Tiangco said the search committee is looking at six names as possible running mate of Binay when he seeks the presidency in 2016. Tiangco, however, refused to name names, saying: “Kasi ang nangyayari pag sinasabi namin yung pangalan, first of all, it’s unfair to the others na hindi napangalanan. Number 2, pag nagbigay kasi kami ng pangalan… ang lumalabas minsan yun ang gusto namin. Di ba iba naman yung ‘kino-konsidera?’” He said UNA has a self-imposed deadline of September 30 for Binay’s vice presidential candidate and the party’s senatorial slate. Meanwhile, Tiangco reiterated that they are not threatened by the candidacy of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, saying they are confident that the Filipino people will continue to support Binay, given his track record in government. The UNA official, however, admitted that President Benigno Aquino III’s endorsement of Roxas can boost the interior secretary’s presidential bid. More than that, he said, Read More …
