Top execs, directors resign from Tiu-owned AgriNurture

At a press conference in Quezon City on Wednesday, November 5, businessman Antonio ‘Tony’ Tiu becomes emotional as he claims he was being blackmailed by some personalities from the government if he would not cooperate in the Senate investigation on various allegations against Vice President Jejomar Binay. Tiu also criticized Senator Alan Peter Cayetano for being harsh on him during the Senate inquiry into the controversies. Tiu reiterated he is not a dummy of VP Binay as implied by the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – AgriNurture Inc., the company owned by controversial businessman Tony Tiu, said three of its directors and two top executives have resigned. In a disclosure to the stock exchange on Wednesday, the firm said directors James Sayre, Tai Chuan Lin and Edmund Zheng resigned “to pursue other business pursuits.” AgriNurture’s president and chief executive Pablo Capati Jr., and chief financial officer Romeo Bato also submitted their resignations. The company said Capati and Bato resigned “to focus on other professional and personal commitments.” Last year, Tiu was accused of being Vice President Jejomar Binay’s dummy for the so-called “Hacienda Binay” in Rosario, Batangas. Tiu is also facing tax evasion charges and has been penalized by the Security and Exchange Commission related to errors in financial reporting. Trade of shares in Greenergy Holdings, Tiu’s holding company, is currently suspended at the Philippine Stock Exchange as the local stock market also monitors the controversies surrounding Tiu. Tiu has repeatedly denied being a dummy of the Binays. Read More …

OPAPP’s stubbornness on BBL delayed deliberation – Escudero

The Senate Committee on Local Government, chaired by Senator Bongbong Marcos, together with the Committees on Peace Unification and Reconcillation; and Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes, will contiunue its inquiry on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law. Also present during the BBL hearing is Senator Chiz Escudero. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The passage of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law would have been easier and faster if the government peace panel has been open to the amendments and admitted its shortcomings earlier on, Senator Francis Escudero said Monday. During the Senate hearing on BBL, Escudero scored the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) and the peace panel for failure to consult all the stakeholders in the Bangsamoro. “Sa totoo lang kung sa simula’t mula naging bukas ang OPAPP at GRP sa mga  pagbabago, mas mabilis pa siguro maipapasa ito. Kayo po, iyong mga bossing niyo sa OPAPP at GRP ang nagmatigas e.  Ang posisyon as is where is, hanggang noong isang linggo. Umamin lang sila noong isang gabi sa Malacanang na sige baguhin na natin,” he said. OPAPP Undersecretary Jose Lorena admitted during the hearing that the consultation they conducted was not enough. “There is an understanding that there will be consultation when Congress discusses this (BBL). The Congress will draft a law that will reflect the sentiment of the people and not just the MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front),” he said. Escudero then asked why the OPAPP was stubborn on its position that the BBL Read More …

When you can’t pay your business debts!

If your business is in distress – you owe a lot of money but you can’t pay, your creditors will probably threaten legal action against your business and very likely, you personally as well. How much they can collect, and how they can go about collecting it, will depend on how your business is organized, and whether you personally guaranteed repayment of the obligation. To what extent you are personally liable depends on several factors, the most important being, how your business is structured and whether you personally guaranteed or secured the debt. Sole Proprietors and Partnerships If you are a sole proprietor, you and your business are one and the same in the eyes of the law, which means you are personally responsible for all of the business’s debts. If there isn’t enough money in the business to pay these debts, creditors can take your personal assets to pay them. Partners in a general partnership have similar personal liability for business debts: Each partner is personally liable for the entirety of the business’s debts (and any partner can usually bind the entire partnership to a business deal — a scary combination). This means that if there isn’t enough money in the business to pay the debts, and your partners are broke, creditors can take your personal assets to pay all of the business’s debts, not just your share. Corporations and Limited Liability Companies If your business is organized as a corporation or a limited liability company (LLC), your personal Read More …

Senate to probe suspicious P2B Philhealth claims

Philhealth says its 600 members nationwide may stop honoring Philhealth benefits because of the delayed release of reimbursements for services rendered but assures that all regional offices have made a commitment to pay claims of all providers faster than the 60 days processing time as mandated by law. Photo shows thousands of PhilHealth cards for General Santos beneficiaries taken last September 13, at Lagao gymnasium. Photo: Russell Delvo/Gensan Info Office MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Senate is set to investigate the alleged anomalous and fraudulent claims by accredited hospitals and clinics to the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) amounting to P2 billion. Senator Teofisto Guingona III, chairman of the blue ribbon committee, said he heard of disturbing claims that some accredited hospitals and clinics would seek out large volume of PhilHealth members to operate on even if the treatment is unnecessary and may even be dangerous to the patient. “If found true, this is a matter of national concern. It is criminal to misappropriate funds that are actually needed by other patients. But to endanger the lives of Filipinos as a means to eat through PhilHealth’s funds is beyond deplorable,” he said Tuesday. PhilHealth officials earlier raised red flags on some benefit payments to accredited hospitals and clinics around the country amounting to P2 billion, including P325 million worth of ‘highly suspicious’ benefit payments to two eye care centers in Metro Manila. The Department of Health stated that an investigation was prompted after an audit of the year 2014 showed that Read More …

Manny Pacquiao vs. Mel Saluma

This is not a story about boxing. This is not a sports article nor an analysis of who should have won the “fight of the century”. It is however, a story about good vs. evil – and I don’t mean Floyd Mayweather. While most of humanity (at least in North America and the Philippines) were glued to their television sets to see the dual between Manny Pacquiao and Money Floyd, in this part of the world, at the same time a fellow Filipina was arrested in a sophisticated immigration fraud scam that targeted mostly Filipinos. Her only motivation was greed. In contrast, Pacquiao was quoted as wanting to give some of his proceeds to charity. On one hand, there is the sense that Pacquiao was fighting for his nation and the country of the Philippines. After all, he is a congressman, and to serve and respect his countrymen must be at the forefront of his mind. Win or lose, Pacquiao will always be regarded as a hero and champion of the Philippines. A boxing title does not give someone credibility – a person’s actions do. It is for that reason that most of the world was hoping that the “good guy” would win last week in Las Vegas. It is for that reason that most of the crowd at the MGM were shouting “Manny, Manny” the entire night. For no one likes a cheater. No one likes those who prey on the innocent and who take advantage of others. Almost at the same time that Pacquiao Read More …

Gretchen Ho denies she is pregnant

Gretchen Ho (MNS photo) Former collegiate volleyball player Gretchen Ho has denied that she is pregnant with Robi Domingo’s child. Ho said she is clueless as to where the rumors are coming from. “May tsismis daw na buntis daw ako. Buntis ako? Kung kailan pumayat ako, doon pa ako na-tsismis? Ewan ko kung ano ang issue nila bakit nila ako ginagawang buntis,” she said. Ho also denied that she and Domingo are planning to tie the knot real soon. “Matagal pa, matagal pa. Career kami ngayon,” she simply stated. Ho and Domingo became romantically linked in 2012. Months after, Domingo eventually confirmed their relationship. In a previous interview, Domingo said Ho helps him “discover” things about himself. “Just thinking about her makes me smile for some reason… Iba eh, being with her is a different kind of feeling. When I’m with her, I become more of myself,” he said. “I begin to discover myself more through her.” Ho, on the other hand, had said that she is lucky to have Domingo in her life. “He always encourages me and tells me, ‘Kaya mo ‘yan, you’re improving already.’ He watches my performances on TV and during events and he gives me advice dahil matagal na siya sa industry. So he tells me to not do this or do that, ganun. Very supportive,” she said. (MNS)

Residents near ‘Hacienda Binay’ being forced to testify vs VP – UNA

Vice President Jejomar Binay addresses the crowd during the 36th National Conference of Employers at Marriott hotel in Pasay City on Friday. Binay told the business community his family only has five bank accounts, denying the Anti Money Laundering Council report that he owns about 242 bank accounts. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) on Tuesday claimed that residents in the vicinity of the alleged “Hacienda Binay” in Rosario, Batangas, were being harassed by authorities to testify against Vice President Jejomar Binay. In a statement, UNA interim secretary Atty. JV Bautista said his party had been receiving complaints of harassment from property owners and the neighborhood of Sunchamp Ecotourism Farm, which is owned by businessman Antonio Tiu, an alleged Binay dummy. “We received pleas from some residents of Rosario, Batangas saying that they are being harassed to testify against the vice president,” Bautista said. “These people supposedly introduced themselves as National Bureau of Investigation agents.” However, a video earlier provided to the Senate by former Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado showed people openly and willingly pointing to the property “of the Binays.” Bautista said residents were receiving anonymous threats, forcing them to tag Binay as the owner of the 350-hectare hacienda. “For their security, the Rosario residents originally do not want to speak up, but they are already being harassed and caught in the middle of a ‘political crossfire,’” he added. In a Senate hearing in October last year, Mercado alleged that Binay owned the 350-hectare Read More …

Drilon will consult Bongbong Marcos if there is a need to meet Aquino on BBL

The Senate Committee on Local Government, chaired by Senator Bongbong Marcos, together with the Committees on Peace Unification and Reconcillation; and Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes, will contiunue its inquiry on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law. Also present during the BBL hearing is Senator Chiz Escudero. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senate President Franklin Drilon said Tuesday he has yet to decide whether there is a need for President Benigno Aquino III to meet with senators regarding the Bangsamoro Basic Law. In a radio interview, Drilon said he will consult first with his colleagues, especially Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr., chairman of the local government committee, regarding the matter. “Atin pong pagpapasiyahan iyan at kokonsulta po muna ako sa aking mga kasamahan, lalo na sa Committee on Local Government sa Senado, kay Senator Bongbong, kung ano ang kanilang feeling. Maisusumite na ba ang committee report sa Senado?” he said. He believes he can make a decision before the weekends. “Tingnan po natin. Masyado pong maaga para po ako ay magpasya diyan. Ito pong llinggo na ito ay siguro we can make a decision,” he said. Aquino said Monday that he will wait for Drilon’s advice if he still needs to meet senators to explain the importance of immediately passing the BBL. Marcos, meanwhile, welcomed a potential dialogue with Aquino on the controversial measure but expressed doubt if he will be included there. “Mabuti ‘yun, at para naman masabi namin sa kanya kung ano ang nakikita naming problema. Pero baka doon Read More …
