Witness Edgar Motabato appears before the Senate Committee on Justice’s probe on the alleged rampant extrajudicial killings and summary executions of suspected criminals. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senators recommended Thursday placing self-confessed killer and witness Edgar Matobato under the protection and custody of the Senate. Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said the Senate should provide sanctuary to Matobato within the Senate grounds so that he will be adequately protected. “My motion is to place the witness under the custody of the Sergeant-at-Arms and provide sanctuary within the Senate grounds until formal arrangements can be made,” he said. Trillanes also wanted Matobato to be placed under the Department of Justice’s Witness Protection Program. Senator Leila de Lima, chairman of the Senate committee on justice and human rights, agreed with the motion. “The Senate is the best to provide protection to the witness at this time,” she said. Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III and Senator Franklin Drilon also agreed with the motion. Trillanes also recommended that the witness be given legislative immunity. Both motions should be approved by Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III before it can be implemented. Matobato said during the hearing that he knows his testimony could cost him his life. “Alam ko ‘yung testimony ko ‘yung buhay ko naman ang kapalit. Matagal na nila akong hinahabol,” he said. The witness has earlier been admitted to the WPP but he left after President Rodrigo Duterte won, saying he knows he will be killed. “Alam ko na ipapabunot ako sa WPP. Read More …
Sunshine Dizon (MNS photo) Actress Sunshine Dizon on Tuesday took to Instagram to address rumors that she and her estranged husband Timothy Tan have reconciled. In the lengthy Instagram post, Dizon urged people not to readily believe what they read in gossip columns. “I issue this statement to clarify untruthful stories that have been published about me in gossip columns and blind items,” she wrote. “I request any person who has no involvement in my cases to please refrain from fanning the flames of gossip and intrigue. The past months have been extremely traumatic for me and my children, and our wounds are still raw.” Dizon also clarified her legal counsel Atty. Claire Castro did not back out from the case. In fact, it was Castro who decided to hire a new lawyer, Atty. Reeza Singzon, to represent her. Despite their marital woes, Dizon said she chooses to remain civil with Tan “but I hope no one mistakes my civility for forgiveness.” According to her, Tan is still allowed to visit their children since it is his right as a parent. “This, however, does not mean we have reconciled as spouses. A man’s relationship with his children is quite different and apart from his relationship with his spouse,” Dizon explained. She then asked the media to only report information that comes straight from her or her lawyer. “If any information about my cases does not come from my new lawyer or from me, then what you heard is unconfirmed information Read More …
President Rodrigo R. Duterte welcomes the US Congressional delegation accompanied by US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg at the President’s Hall in Malacañan Palace on July 19. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Rodrigo Duterte telling American troops to leave Mindanao is not yet a policy statement, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Tuesday. “It is not policy yet. It is not policy. In other words, nobody acted on it yet,” he said in a press briefing in Malacañang. “There is no specific directive as to how this pronouncement will be effected,” Abella added. Duterte’s words, however, may be a basis for future actions. “Definitely, the President has already painted a picture, let’s see how it unfolds,” he said. Duterte on Monday said that the US special forces based in Mindanao “have to go.” “Kaya iyong mga special forces, they have to go. They have to go. In Mindanao, maraming mga puti roon, they have to go. I-review ko iyang foreign policy. Hindi ko lang masalita noon out of respect or I do not want a rift with America. But they have to go,” Duterte said in a speech delivered before his new appointees at the Heroes Hall in Malacañang. “As I have often said, I will not dignify any further this so-called drug matrix which, any ordinary lawyer knows too well, properly belongs to the garbage can,” Sen. Leila De Lima, who is linked by President Rodrigo Duterte himself to illegal drugs trade, tells reporters. MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Leila de Lima on Tuesday said the supposed plot of the Liberal Party (LP) to have President Rodrigo Duterte impeached was “just a figment of their wild imagination.” “Naku, saan na naman kaya nanggaling ‘yan? Malaking kasinungalingan ‘yan. It’s just a figment of their wild imagination. Walang ganoong plot,” De Lima said in an interview with reporters. De Lima made the statement after Duterte alleged that “yellow” forces were out to discredit him and build a case against him for possible impeachment proceedings in connection with the killings related to his administration’s war against drugs. De Lima, a staunch critic of Duterte, suspected that the supposed plot was being tied to her and the LP as another hearing on alleged summary executions and extrajudicial killings is set to be conducted this week. “I continue to condemn the daily killings kaya siguro ako ang tinitignan nila. Sa akin sila galit and since yellow ako, ang interpretation nila, may plano akong i-oust o impeach ang Pangulo,” she said. Senate President Pro-Tempore Franklin Drilon said the LP, once the ruling party led by former President Benigno Aquino III, have never met on the said plot alleged by Duterte. “We have not met on Read More …

Health Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial said the two new Zika patients are living in the same house with the sixth patient found positive for the virus. Ubial said that all three patients showed minor symptoms of Zika such as fever and mild skin rash. None of the three have been hospitalized and have already recovered, she said. It sent a team to Iloilo City to check if other people living with and near the sixth patient have also contracted Zika. Ubial said at least 88 houses around the residence of the sixth patient were checked by the city government and found the presence of larvae of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes., the carrier of Zika as well as dengue. She said the two new cases were among the 12 people tested for Zika in the community. Meanwhile, Ubial said that the Iloilo City government has intensified its search and destroy drive to rid the community of the Zika-carrying mosquitoes. Kathryn Bernardo (MNS photo) Kathryn Bernardo says the loyal fans of her KathNiel loveteam with Daniel Padilla will see a different Kathryn and Daniel in their new movie, “Barcelona: A Love Untold” that opens on September 14, as directed by Olivia Lamasan. “We’re playing more mature roles here, hindi na pa-cute, hindi na teenybopper roles like we did before in ‘Must Be Love’ and ‘She’s Dating the Gangster’,” she says. “This is just to be expected kasi nga hindi na rin kami teenagers ni Daniel, so kailangang lumevel up na kami because even our fans, mas mature na rin. I’m sure mapapansin nila ang pagkakaiba when they watch the movie.” Someone says Kathryn’s competence as a drama actress is very evident in many scenes in the film. Even Daniel is said to have been amazed by her transformation and her acting prowess as a young woman who goes to Spain to rise from her failures and meets Daniel as Ely, a guy who’s heartbroken after his sweetheart, Celine, a lookalike of Kathryn, dumped him. So what’s the real score between them at this stage? “Exclusive na kami. Wala nang puwedeng dumagdag na isa pa doon. We enjoy each other’s company every day,” Daniel declares. James Reid (MNS photo) James Reid and Anne Curtis have tested negative for illegal drugs, their talent agency said in a statement. This is in response to several tabloid reports linking both Reid and Curtis to the use of illegal drugs such as methamphetamine (shabu) and THC (marijuana). According to the Viva Artists Agency (VAA), the reports are nothing but “unfounded rumors.” “These reports were broadcast on AM radio and published in several tabloids with only an unnamed ‘pusher’ as a source and with no further evidence to support the claim,” VAA said. “Ms. Curtis and Mr. Reid are aware of and give importance to the influence of artists in society as role models to the youth.” Anne Curtis (MNS Photo) “Thus, VAA and its artists have taken the initiative to publicize the results to inform the public of the truth and to show support for the government’s campaign against illegal use of drugs,” the statement concluded. The statement issued Tuesday afternoon also showed the laboratory results from Hi-Precision Diagnostics in Mandaluyong City, a medical laboratory licensed by the Department of Health and accredited with the Dangerous Drugs Board. Some personalities on Duterte’s list “voluntarily surrendered” at Camp Crame on Monday.(MNS photo) MANILA (PNA) – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa on Monday confirmed that the national police already knew the mastermind in the bombing attack in Davao City that claimed the lives of 14 individuals and injured 70 others last Sept. 2. Dela Rosa said that the arrest of the vice mayor was in connection with illegal drugs and illegal possession of firearms. He added that all the news about the vice mayor were all “speculations” only. As of Monday, Dela Rosa said, there were still no evidence that would link the vice mayor in the bombing incident in Davao City. “Hindi muna ako magsalita hanggang hindi pa namin ma-connect. We have to connect all the dots to have an airtight case against the suspects.
