This was after the high court affirmed on Thursday an earlier decision compelling the poll body to activate the voter verification paper audit trail feature of the vote counting machines. In a media briefing, SC Public Information Office chief and spokesman said the tribunal voted unanimously to deny the Comelec motion seeking to reverse the SC’s March 8 decision. Associate Justices Antonio Carpio and Lucas Bersamin were on leave, while Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta, who did not attend the oral arguments, did not leave his vote. Responding immediately after the announcement, former Sen. Richard Gordon, who filed the petition, said the Comelec does not need additional time to just to activate the voter verification paper audit trail (VVPAT) and make changes in the machines’ source code. “Hindi mahirap ayusin ang source code. Nagawa nila nung February 8 and 9. Pinalitan nila [ang source code] dahil may hindi nagtugma [sa machines]… Ginawa rin nila iyon noong automated elections noong 2010. Nadiskubre nilang may diperensiya. Nabilang at napalitan nila ang makina, 76,000. Napalitan lahat ng CF cards. Nakakagulat iyon. Kaya malakas ang loob ko na kaya iyan,” he said. Gordon Read More …

Aerial shot of the province of which was heavily damaged by super typhoon Yolanda (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Philippines may face stronger typhoons due to warmer temperatures, US Vice President Al Gore said Wednesday in a Climate Reality Project forum in Manila. “Warmer oceans makes ocean-based storms much stronger,” Gore said. He explained that 93 percent of the heat trapped in the atmosphere due to excessive carbon emission heats the ocean. “Supertyphoon Yolanda crossed over parts of the Pacific Ocean that were three percent warmer than normal and it became the most powerful and most destructive storm to ever make a landfall,” Gore said. “I am not here simply to do a lecture…I’m here also to ask you to be part of the solution. This is a moment in human history unlike any other…to have an obligation for those who come after us that is fundamentally different…” Al Gore, Manila Philippines (Al Gore in Manila Youtube video capture) One of the strongest typhoons recorded to make landfall, Yolanda killed over 6,000 people and affected over a million families in November 2013. Last Saturday, Gore went to visit Tacloban City, one of the places that suffered the greatest damage due to the typhoon. Gore explained how warmer temperature evaporates more moisture in the atmosphere, leading to longer – and more powerful – precipitation, leading to more flooding especially in areas with particularly low elevation. “If we put much more water vapor in the sky and much more heat in Read More …

(MNS photo) Vice-presidential race frontrunner Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero said it is high time the government seriously address the problem of land-grabbing and stop individuals or groups from illegally and forcibly taking the land of others, including those owned by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). “Land-grabbing involving both public and private lands should be stopped and land grabbers should be dealt with accordingly,” said Escudero, who is running as independent under the banner “Gobyernong may Puso” alongside leading presidential candidate Sen. Grace Poe. Escudero said he received numerous complaints regarding land grabbing, particularly in Antipolo City, where property owners, mostly OFWs, lost their lands by force, intimidation or misinformation. “Land grabbing seems to be rampant in Antipolo City and yet authorities are not doing anything,” Escudero said, as he lamented that most of the victims are OFWs. “It is unacceptable that the properties bought by OFWs with their hard-earned money accumulated over the years of working abroad, go away just like that,” he said. Escudero, meanwhile, vowed to take back all government-owned lands illegally encroached by land-grabbing syndicates and use them for future socialized housing projects, if he and Poe are elected. “We will retrieve all state lands in adverse possession of land mafias across the country and turn them into housing projects Read More …
Workers of the National Printing Office (NPO) wait for the resumption of printing of the 2016 official ballots, Thursday. The printing of the ballots was stalled due to a complaint filed by presidential candidate Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago due to the exclusion of the name of her party on the printed ballots.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Commission on Elections chairman Andres Bautista on Thursday said the national elections will push through on May 9, despite its opposition to a Supreme Court decision requiring the poll body to print voter receipts. Bautista gave the assurance during oral arguments at the SC on the activation of the voter verification paper audit trail (VVPAT) feature of the vote counting machines for the May polls. The poll body chief gave the comment following a question during interpellation by Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, who wrote the decision on the VVPAT petition. “Are you up to the challenge to make sure that even with the receipt, that you will do all you can in order to meet all of these problems? Or are you giving up?” asked the magistrate. “No. We will do all we can,” responded Bautista. The poll chief said they will “try our best” to follow whatever decision the high court would render on the VVPAT issue and ensure there will be credible polls. Leonen pressed further to elicit a categorical answer from Bautista that the elections will push through on May 9. “You will do your utmost, given your exemplary capabilities, to make Read More …
Jolina Magdangal (MNS photo) Jolina Magdangal is officially back in the recording scene and the singer-actress could not help but rave about her experience collaborating with other artists. In her brand new album “Back to Love,” Magdangal had duets with singers like Yeng Constantino and Kyla, rapper Gloc 9, and comedian Vice Ganda. Magdangal said: “Parang feeling ko ‘yung sa akin, very easy listening lang ako na straight singing. Tapos sasamahan mo ng Kyla with R&B, ng Gloc, so nag-iiba ‘yung tunog.” Magdangal said she had fun collaborating with them because they were able to put a twist to her previous hits, like “Chuvachoochoo 2.0,” which features Vice Ganda. “Yung kay Vice, bago siya nag-record, nag-usap kami kung puwede daw ba siyang mag-adlib sa kanta. Sobrang okay kasi ‘yung recording, masaya siya,” she said. “Yung with Gloc, nag-iba talaga yung tunog ng ‘Kapag Ako’y Nagmahal.’ Favorite ko talaga ‘yung kanta na ‘yun so okay na ni-remake ko na rin siya,” she added. Since her album contains mostly breakup songs, Magdangal said it felt weird while she was recording because she doesn’t feel any tinge of sadness at all. “Ano na kaya ang feeling ng malungkot? Kasi ngayon ang feeling ko lang, I’m just very grateful, thankful. Minsan, ‘yung pagkanta na lang ng malulungkot na kanta, doon ko na lang nafi-feel na ganito pala maging malungkot,” she said. Asked how the new album is different from her older ones, she said: “I can say na dito sa album na ito, naging Read More …

She admits her and Dingdong’s first born already got offers for endorsements. “But we begged off kasi sobrang liit pa ng baby namin,” she said. “Pero open naman kami to such offers, kaya lang, later na siguro. Gusto muna naming lumaki siya. Hindi naman sa we’re trying to hide her from the public. Maski nga sa binyag niya, kakaunti lang talaga ang inimbita namin kasi hindi naman artista yung anak namin.” “At siguro nga may pagka-stage mother ako kaya protective ako sa kanya. Kung puede sana, maging endorser siya sa edad na pwede na siyang tanungin: Anak, gusto mo ba? At siya na ang sasagot kung gusto niya, ‘Yes, mommy,” she added. So do they intend to give her a baby brother or baby sister soon? “Siguro in two more years. Dream namin to have a big family but we want to enjoy her muna. Pero kung ipagkakaloob kaagad sa amin ng Panginoon, okay rin lang po.” (MNS)

Unlike other presidential candidates, there are no uncertainties when it comes to Roxas, Aquino, chairman of the ruling Liberal Party (LP) said. The LP vice-presidential candidate is Camarines Sur Rep. Presidential aspirant and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte chants “Mabuhay ang Moro people!” before entering his vehicle after his campaign rally in Cotabato City on Saturday. Majority of the Bangsamoros in the event expressed support for Duterte for his clear stance on resolving the Mindanao conflict.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — A presidency by PDP Laban standard-bearer Rodrigo Duterte shall provide socialized housing for homeless Filipinos, but will not condone illegal settlers, especially those with connections to land-grabbing syndicates. PDP Laban spokesperson Atty. Paola Alvarez stressed this today, saying Duterte and his running mate Alan Peter Cayetano shall put a stop once and for all to those who, illegally and oftentimes by the use of force, take the land of others, including those owned by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). “OFWs are the most vulnerable to the nefarious activities of illegal settlers with ties to syndicates according to reports and complaints reaching the office of Senator Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III,” said Alvarez. “Our OFWs work long years on foreign soil only to find out that the properties they’ve bought with money earned from their blood, sweat and tears had been taken over by illegal settlers,” added Alvarez. Alvarez said that Sen. Pimentel, chairman of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, has emphasized that while all Filipinos must be afforded roofs over their heads, this should not be accomplished by trampling on the rights of legitimate property owners. The lawyer lamented that land-grabbing victims are ironically prevented by law, specifically Republic Read More …
Senator Jinggoy Estrada arrives at the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City on Monday, June 30, for his arraignment over the plunder charges filed against him and businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles in connection with the alleged P10-B pork barrel scam. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The trial of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada’s cases in connection with the pork barrel scam is not set to commence anytime soon. At the scheduled pre-trial of his graft case before the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division Monday morning, the prosecution and the defense admitted that they were not yet done with the marking of voluminous documentary evidence that they intend to present during the trial proper of the case. Under the rules of criminal procedure, only the pre-marked evidence and list of witnesses can be presented during the trial proper of the case. This prompted Fifth Division chairman Associate Justice Roland Jurado to order the setting of a weekly preliminary conference to enable both camps to finish marking their exhibits. The whole day preliminary conference was set every Tuesday starting March 22 until June 7. The pre-trial was set tentatively on June 13. Both camps committed to be present in all the preliminary conference dates. During a pre-trial proceeding, the prosecution and the defense are expected to submit the final list of their witnesses and evidence to be presented during the trial proper. Some issues and procedures for the conduct of an orderly trial are also expected to be discussed. Lanee David, lawyer of the alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Read More …
Representatives of the Makabayan bloc led by Rep. Neri Colmenares link arms with Sen. Grace Poe and Sen. Chiz Escudero during a solidarity event at the Quezon City Sports Club on Thursday. The group declared support for Team Galing at Puso in the 2016 election.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Supreme Court decision declaring Sen. Grace Poe a natural-born Filipino and a resident of the Philippines should not be part of the law of the land because it practically “rewrote” the 1987 Philippine Constitution. This was the statement of lawyer Manuelito Luna, counsel for former Sen. Francisco “Kit” Tatad, as he slammed the high tribunal’s decision, through a 9-6 vote, to overturn Poe’s disqualification and allow her to run for president in May. Luna told reporters on Monday that their camp will file a motion for reconsideration “either Wednesday or Thursday” to contest the Poe main decision and seek its reversal. Citing a revelation made by Associate Justice Antonio Carpio in his dissent, Luna said the high court could not declare Poe natural-born because the tribunal apparently failed to get a majority vote of eight in favor of the lawmaker’s citizenship, after the justices voted 7-5-3. “Only seven justices or less than the majority of the SC voted to declare Poe presumptively natural-born. It binds no one. It cannot become part of the law of the land or jurisprudence,” Luna told reporters, citing Rule 12, Section 1 of the high tribunal’s Internal Rules. Under the rules, all decisions and actions Read More …
