Batangas Gov. Vilma-Santos Recto raises the hand of Liberal Party (LP) vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo as expression of her support during their meeting on Wednesday before the party’s grand rally at Batangas City Sports Coliseum. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A ranking official during the Arroyo administration has voiced his support to the tandem of former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo for the May 9 elections. Eduardo Ermita, who served as executive secretary of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, expressed his support to the tandem during the Daang Matuwid coalition’s sortie in Batangas province. “Mabuhay ang susunod na Presidente ng Pilipinas, ang anak ng dating senador Gerry Roxas at apo ng kauna-unahang Presidente [ng Ikatlong Republika], Mar Roxas!” said Ermita, a former Batangas congressman. Aside from being appointed executive secretary, Ermita, a former military official, also served as secretary of the Department of National Defense during Arroyo’s term. In a chance interview, Robredo said he doesn’t see any conflict with Ermita’s support. “Yung lahat naman ng suporta welcome pero ‘yung importante siguro kahit anong klaseng suporta, hindi nagbabago ‘yung tinatayuan namin,” Robredo told reporters. “At saka paniniwala kasi marami namang sumusuporta na wala namang hinihinging kapalit,” she added. President Benigno Aquino III has repeatedly said that his administration would pursue the plunder cases against Arroyo, currently on hospital arrest at the Veterans Medical Memorial Center. Roxas, Robredo and the rest of the Daang Matuwid coalition took its campaign to the province of Batangas on Wednesday, Read More …
Rodrigo Duterte (left), seven-term Davao City mayor and presidential candidate, raises his hands with running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano during their proclamation ceremony in Manila on Monday. Duterte filed his candidacy last week following weeks of speculation on his intention.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Only the “best and the brightest.” A Duterte administration will have “accomplished and reformist” cabinet secretaries if the tough-talking Davao City mayor wins the presidency in May, said his running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano. During Kapihan sa Senado on Thursday, Cayetano said “known accomplished and reformists in their sector” would be appointed in the government of presidential aspirant Rodrigo Duterte. But Cayetano said he and Duterte had not discussed possible names to compose the mayor’s cabinet if elected president in May. “The mayor does not want to be presumptuous,” he said. “Hindi talaga napag-uusapan (it had not been discussed), except that it will be the best and the brightest,” he added. The senator said Duterte does not want to “pick solely” from his supporters as to who would compose his cabinet members. During his campaign sortie in Legazpi City, Duterte said he would appoint Albay Gov. Joey Salceda as secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda). Salceda is a stalwart of the ruling Liberal party, being one of its provincial chairs
Department of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima’s gesture during press conference on Mamasapano incidence that killed 44 SAF troopers on Tuesday at the DOJ Office. The DOJ filed criminal cases against MILF and BIFF members involved in the killings. (MNS Photo) BATANGAS CITY (Mabuhay) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) should do its best to make sure that the elections will be held on May 9 by hook or by crook, Liberal Party senatorial candidate Leila de Lima said on Wednesday. De Lima said the Comelec should find ways to comply with the Supreme Court order directing the poll body to issue ballot receipts because “resorting to manual counting compromises the sanctity of the vote and, ultimately, our democracy.” “The Comelec should stop saying that the Supreme Court ruling would result in the postponement of the elections and just focus on how to comply with the high court’s order,” De Lima said in a statement. The high court recently ordered the Comelec to activate the voter receipt printing feature of the vote counting machines (VCMs) for the 2016 national elections. The en banc decision, however, disappointed the poll body, saying enabling the feature would force the Comelec officials to push back their timetables ahead of the election day two months from now. De Lima, a former election lawyer and justice secretary, said that Comelec should initiate measures that will ensure full compliance with the Automated Elections Law. “Rather than paint a dire picture of the elections being postponed, Comelec should Read More …
Karla Estrada (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Karla Estrada quickly dispelled rumors that she will be hosting a morning show, replacing her friend Kris Aquino, who announced that she will be taking a hiatus from show business. “Tigilan natin ‘yan. Hindi totoo ‘yan,” Estrada said in an interview. “At saka hindi mapapalitan si mareng Kris dahil napakagaling noon. walang makakapantay doon. Kanya-kanya tayo ng style. Kris Aquino is Kris Aquino. My God, hindi nga sumagi sa isip ko ‘yan. Nakakaloka kayo.” Estrada signed an exclusive contract with ABS-CBN and part of the deal is that she will be hosting a new game show. But asked if she’s open to do a morning show, Estrada said: “Sa mga offer-offer, wala itong kinalaman sa kahit kanino and huwag na nating (bahiran). Ngayon nga lang dumating, kung makabahid naman kayo, grabe. Bigyan natin ng chance muna na makahinga na magpasaya, ‘di ba? Tignan natin kung saan tayo.” Estrada said she supports Aquino’s decision to take a well-deserved break for herself and her family. “I think she deserves it. Kasi masyadong matagal na din siya at kailangan na niya din ng pahinga dahil sakitin ‘yan si Mareng Kris. Matalino naman siyang tao so kung anuman ang desisyon niya, alam niyang tama ‘yon para sa kanya at para sa mga anak niya,” Estrada said.(MNS)

It’s because of this money laundering case filed by the AMLC before the Department of Justice that has prevented Deguito from spilling the beans, lawyer Ferdinand Topacio said in a press statement on Thursday. The case was filed on Friday, the day Deguito was barred from leaving the Philippines to go to an alleged vacation trip to Japan. “There is a conspiracy here that boggles the mind involving extremely wealthy, powerful and well-connected individuals, but we are confident that the Senate will not spare anyone, no matter his or her status and stature in the banking community and in Philippine society, so that the incident under investigation will not be Read More …

KC Concepcion and Sharon Cuneta (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) -– KC Concepcion is not too keen about working with her mother Sharon Cuneta on a movie. “I think it’s too close for comfort to be working with her sa movie project,” she said, noting that she grew up watching her act while on the movie set. “It would be weird to do a movie with her. Pero we always see each other naman sa mga concert events ng ABS-CBN or something. Wala pa kaming napapag-usapan,” she said. Concepcion, however, said she is excited to see Cuneta and her father, Gabby Concepcion, in a reunion project. “Siguro si mom and papa. Manonood pa ako,” she said, laughing. Cuneta and Concepcion were dubbed as the ‘80s movie power couple with movies like “Dear Heart” and “PS I Love You.” Their fan base grew larger when they eventually became a real-life couple. The two tied the knot in 1984 but their marriage didn’t last long. Cuneta is now married to former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, with whom she has two daughters and a son. (MNS)

The Philippine officials noted the SFRC’s instrumental role in sustaining US interest in the Asia-Pacific region and in giving substance to the rebalance policy. “The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has been very influential in the decision-making process of the current US Administration. We recognize the considerable impact that the Committee’s initiatives has had on increasing US foreign military financing (FMF) to the Philippines and in ensuring that the United States continues to be engaged in our region,” said Ambassador Cuisia. Senator Corker observed the importance of raising FMF in view of China’s behavior. RCBC treasurer Raul Victor Tan said Deguito was supposed to be assigned at the Beacon branch in the Bonifacio Global City but was eventually appointed to the Jupiter post upon the recommendation of a certain Jason Go. “Who is this Mr Jason Go that he can cause the designation of the branch manager? He is not part of the RCBC but he seems to be very powerful?” asked Senator Teofisto Guingona III, the chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee. “I believe he has large businesses which would help in bringing up the business of the branch,” Tan answered. $81 million laundered money that belonged to Bangladesh ends up in casinos RCBC –Jupiter Branch Manager Maia Santos-Deguito takes an oath before testifying during a Senate hearing on the US$81 million money-laundering scandal, at the Philippines Senate on Tuesday. Deguito was summoned to shed light on the Philippines’ biggest anti-money laundering case involving money stolen from the central bank of Bangladesh.(MNS photo) Manila, Philippines | AFP | – A Philippine banker shifted $81 million stolen from Bangladesh’s central bank into various accounts because she feared for her life, her colleague told a parliamentary investigation on Thursday. Maia Deguito, manager of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp (RCBC) branch in Manila’s financial district, could only muster a blank stare when discussing the dirty money, said Romualdo Agarrado, a senior officer in the same branch. “She just looked at me with a blank stare and said: I would rather do this than get killed, or my family,” Agarrado told the Senate inquiry. In a scam that shocked the financial world, unknown hackers tried to steal around $1 billion from Bangladesh’s deposits with the US Federal Reserve in New York on February 5. They got away with $81 million – sending it to the RCBC branch managed by Deguito – before the scam was uncovered. Authorities have lost track of the money, with significant amounts believed to have been laundered through Philippine casinos. Although low-level bank officers in Manila have been implicated, no-one yet knows who was behind the heist. Acting on a request Read More …
