Which food is healthier? (Food Battle Part 2)

Continuing our head-to-head comparison of healthy foods, let’s find out which one among these foods comes out healthier. To recap, the results of Part 1 of this article are as follows, with the first item listed below coming out as healthier between the two: 1) clear soup over cream soup, 2) fresh fruits over dried fruits, 3) peanuts over shrimp crackers, 4) tomato sauce over fresh tomatoes, 5) hard-boiled egg over fried egg, 6) salad over soup, 7) several small meals a day over one big meal, 8) tea over coffee, 9) fish fat over pork fat, and 10) red wine over white wine. Now, let’s look at our second list of 10 pairs of food items. Can you guess the healthier (or less fatty) food between the pair?  1. Orange vs. apple. A study from the University of Nottingham finds that people who eat more than five apples a week have improved lung function and fewer asthma-like symptoms. Apples are rich in quercetin, a substance known to protect against many cancers. Studies show that people who eat an apple a day have lower chances of getting lung cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Even smokers who often eat apples can somehow minimize the adverse effects of cigarette smoking. Moreover, apples are lower in calories at around 92 calories per apple. However, this does not mean that oranges aren’t good for you. The high vitamin C content of an orange and the fiber found in its membranes are healthy, too. But if Read More …

Illegal recruiters meted out life for defrauding OFW hopefuls

Philippine Overseas Labor Employment office. Photo from www.poea.gov.ph MANILA, Philippines–Two employees of an immigration consultancy firm were meted out life sentences for large-scale illegal recruitment, according to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA). Judge Rose Mary Molina-Alim of Baguio City Regional Trial Court Branch 3 found Rodolfo Domingo Jr. and Roliza Batag guilty of engaging in the recruitment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) without proper authorization from the POEA. Domingo and Batag were employees of Global Consultancy Management Services located at Cresencia Village, Baguio City. According to the POEA, at least 41 complainants, most of them from Baguio, accused Domingo and Batag of collecting from them placement fees ranging from P35,000 up to P170,000. They said they were promised employment as domestics in Canada; as butchers, factory workers and civil engineers in Australia; and as electronic technicians in South Korea, with salaries ranging from P60,000 to P130,000. In another case, the owner of a recruitment firm in Legazpi City, Albay, was convicted of failing to reimburse an OFW for expenses the latter incurred while working on her deployment to the United States and Canada. Lucille Manrique David, owner of Jasia International Manpower Services, was sentenced to up to eight years in prison and to pay a fine of P200,000 by Judge Elmer Lanuzo of the Legazpi Regional Trial Court. PNoy might still certify FOI bill urgent – Poe

Senator Grace Poe said Thursday that she is optimistic that President Benigno Aquino III will finally certify the long-delayed Freedom of Information (FOI) bill urgent.   “Malay n’yo i-surprise tayo ni PNoy (Aquino’s nickname) at i-certify. Hindi natin alam, pero sa pagkakaalam ko at sinabi naman ni House Speaker (Feliciano) Belmonte Jr. na sa kanyang termino ay maipapasa ang FOI. Ngayon sana itong termino na ito sa 16th Congress,” Poe said in an interview over radio dzBB.   She believes that the bill has earned supporters in the Lower House who will push for its passage. Up to the House “Ang aking sinasabi, marami na rin po tayong kakampi sa Lower House. Sa tingin ko maipapasa. Siguro para sa media, mas interesado kayo, yung right of reply (bill) po ay parang hiniwalay na nilang bill. Hindi po nila isinama sa FOI kasi yun po ang nakakasira, so at least kung hiwalay na bill iyan ay puwede nating batikusin nang hiwalay iyan sa FOI,” she said. FOI seeks to mandate public access to information on government transactions. The Right of Reply provision, on the other hand, will legally require media to give the subjects of reports equal space or airtime to reply. “Bakit ito (FOI) importante? Alam niyo, sa pagtaas ng presyo ng mga bilihin, sa haba ng pila sa MRT at LRT, bakit nagkakaroon ng mga ganyang klase ng maintenance na talagang masama… malalaman natin kung sino ang mga nag-bid at puwede nating kaagad imbestigahan para mapigil,” Poe said. She added the FOI would Read More …

CBCP tells PNoy: Let go of the corrupt

Cardinal Tagle with President Benigno Aquino III (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is urging President Benigno Aquino III to fire corrupt members of his Cabinet. CBCP president Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said Aquino should prove his “daang matuwid” or anti-corruption policy by not being selective in investigating alleged irregularities in government. He said investigations should not exclude the allies of the administration. “A government that professes to tread the straight path must remain true to that profession and must be willing to let go of the corrupt in its own ranks,” Socrates said. The CBCP also called on the Commission on Audit (COA) and the Office of the Ombudsman to detail how funds from the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) were spent. This, after the Supreme Court declared as unconstitutional specific acts and practices under the DAP. Critics have been calling on Aquino to sack Budget Secretary Butch Abad over the DAP. But Abad, who has also been linked to the pork barrel scam, continues to enjoy the trust of Aquino. (MNS)

DAP petitioners seek special audit, return of misused funds

Critics of the Aquino administration’s Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) on Monday urged the Commission on Audit (COA) to conduct a special audit on the controversial discretionary fund, which has been declared partly unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. At the same time, they also asked the COA to issue notices of disallowances so the funds found to have been illegally used could be returned to government coffers. According to the group, the notices of disallowance should put “priority on cross-border transfer of funds committed by the Executive branch.” The group is composed of Integrated Bar of the Philippines Executive Vice President Rose Reyes; IBP executive director Alice Vidal; Dante Jimenez and Bobot Dinio of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption; Jose Malvar Villegas; Bishop Reuben Abante, secretary general of “Biblemode; Greco Belgica; and lawyer Manuelito Luna. Last week, the high court sitting en banc had granted their earlier plea and declared some “acts and practices” under the DAP, National Budget Circular No. 541 that authorized DAP, and related issuances, as unconstitutional. “We call on the COA to immediately conduct a special audit on how the DAP funds were disbursed through the specific acts and practices cited as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court,” according to the group’s latest petition. The group said the report that would come out of the COA special report should be made public, similar to what has been done with its report on the Priority Development Assistance Fund or pork barrel funds last year. “Without such COA report, Read More …

She assured the public that there is “no backtracking on either side.” “If we are going through this difficulty now, it is because we want the next stages to be less difficult not only between the government and the MILF, but among all the institutions and actors that will be or have been playing a role in the process,” Ferrer added.
