Duterte will appear at the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec’s) head office in Intramuros, Manila, tomorrow, to make sure that his certificate of candidacy (COC) for president will not have hitches, his spokesman said yesterday. “This (Duterte’s visit to the Comelec) is to bolster his COC which was earlier filed through his lawyer Salvador Medialdea with a personal appearance and oath before a Comelec notary,” Peter Tiu Laviña told reporters in Davao City. Laviña added that Duterte’s move tomorrow will “dispel any doubts about his filing and to thwart efforts to disqualify him and deny the Filipino people of choice in the forthcoming May 9, 2016 elections.” Duterte will be assisted at the Comelec main office by the National Capital Region (NCR) Quick Action Team formed by William Ramirez with the support of Peter Laurel, a classmate of the mayor at the Lyceum University and Davao-born labor leader Dave Diwa. Laviña also pointed out that Vice- Presidential candidate Alan Peter Cayetano and his team will also be present at the Comelec office to support Duterte. “Join us if you are in the Intramuros area. Aquino: BBL will prevent extremism in PHL

(VATICAN) President Benigno S. Aquino III and His Holiness Pope Francis pose with the Philippine delegation for a group photo opportunity at the Sala del Tronetto of the Apostolic Palace following the private audience on Friday (December 04). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III said that the passing of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) will likely prevent the growth of extremism in the country, a threat that has become imminent following the increase in local bandit groups pledging support for ISIS. In a press briefing, Aquino who was Italy for a state visit, mentioned that an official in the Vatican City praised the country’s push for the BBL, as it is being seen as a driver for peace. “I think it was the Secretary of State of the Vatican who was saying that we can serve as an example of how to reach out to our Muslim brothers and achieve peace, and especially in the spirit where extremism is such a threat worldwide, that example might be useful to others to build upon as a response to the radicalization that is happening,” he said. Aquino said the BBL can prevent local bandit groups like the Abu Sayyaf from becoming full-blown extremist groups. “We also mentioned that the Abu Sayyaf, for instance, claims that they were once part of the Al Qaeda network. Now they claim that they are part of the ISIS network, and if there is another group that comes up, I assume they’ll also be—they Read More …

Marcos tells Poe: Keep going

Rep. Imelda Marcos sits with a book in her hands during the launch of their product, “Imeldifique” cooking wines, at a restaurant in Quezon City on Tuesday. The Marcoses are trying to solidify their return to power, with Sen. Bongbong Marcos running for vice president in the May 2016 elections.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator and vice-presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr dished out some “brotherly advice” to Senator Grace Poe after the poll body’s 2nd division disqualified her from running in the 2016 presidential election. “Keep going…keep going. Huwag kang (Poe) panghihinaan ng loob and just know that when you are doing the right thing, you will in the end succeed,” Marcos told reporters Tuesday night when asked if he had advice for Poe. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) 2nd Division earlier ruled Poe could not run for president in May 2016 because she fails to meet the 10-year residency requirement. The Comelec decision is a response to a disqualification case filed by lawyer Estrella Elamparo, who claimed that Poe misrepresented herself in stating that she has the 10-year residency requirement to run for president. Poe said she is disappointed with the decision but noted “this is not the end of the process.” “We will continue to fight for the rights of foundlings and the fundamental right of the people to choose their leaders,” said Poe. Poe’s spokesman, Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian, said they will exhaust all legal remedies to prove that Poe is qualified to seek the presidency. Read More …

5 things you should know about Din Tai Fung Philippines

Always a special treat: The truffle xiao long bao is P138 a piece at DTF in Manila. The opening of Din Tai Fung (DTF) in the Philippines has been one of the most anticipated events of the year. DTF had its origins as a cooking oil retail business, founded in 1958 in Taipei by Bingyi Yang. It wasn’t until 1972 — when cooking oil became available in tin cans and bulk oil sales went into decline — that Yang and his wife, Penmei Lai, decided to transform the shop into a restaurant specializing in steamed soup-filled dumplings called xiao long bao (XLB). It became such a hit that they turned it into a full-service restaurant. Since then, DTF has been accorded numerous accolades, including The New York Times naming it one of the Top 10 Restaurants in the World in 1993, and its Hong Kong branches (Silvercord at Tsim Sha Tsui and Yee Wo at Causeway Bay) having been awarded Michelin stars. Today, DTF has 119 branches in 14 countries, including the USA, Australia, Japan, Dubai — and finally, the Philippines. Here are a few things you should know about the Philippine outpost of our favorite xiao long bao place: 1) Din Tai Fung was brought into the Philippines by The Moment Group. DTF is one of the most difficult franchises to acquire. According to a report published in Forbes in 2011, the DTF headquarters receives and rejects as many as 20 letters a week from prospective franchisees in places Read More …

PNoy just wanted proper perspective on laglag bala: Palace

President Aquino attends the inauguration of Pointwest Digital Center at Rockwell Business Center in Pasig City (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Tuesday denied that President Benigno Aquino III was being insensitive when he indicated that the reports of alleged laglag bala extortion at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport were overblown by the media. In a radio interview, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr. said Aquino merely wanted to put the issue in the proper perspective, pointing out that there was still an ongoing investigation on the alleged racket at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminals. “Hindi rin naman po siguro makatuwirang sabihin na manhid o insensitive ang gobyerno. Ilalagay lang po sa tamang perspective,” said Coloma. “Ginagawa naman ng pamahalaan iyong pagmamanman kung mayroong nagsasamantala. Patuloy pa nga ang iyong imbestigasyon. Humingi lang nang konti pang panahon ang Department of Justice,” he added. Critics of the Aquino administration pounced on the President’s recent remarks wherein he dismissed as sensational the reports of extortionists preying on passengers caught with bullets in their luggage. In an interview with reporters at the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, Aquino said the controversy, which supposedly victimizes overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), appeared to have been sensationalized. He said some groups even used the controversy against his administration. “Medyo na-sensationalize at medyo may mga nakinabang na mag-sensationalize niyan. Okay, pero dulo nito, hindi tayo pwedeng dumaan sa haka-haka,” said the president. Aquino said all allegations should be backed up with proof as he Read More …

November 22nd, 2015 07:01 AM KUALA LUMPUR—President Benigno Aquino III has confirmed that Abu Sayyaf extremists had beheaded a Malaysian national they held captive since May, promising that security forces would go after the perpetrators. Mr. Aquino confirmed the report after hearing Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak condemn the beheading of Bernard Then as Razak opened the 27th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Leaders Summit here. “President Aquino has directed the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police to further intensify operations against the Abu Sayyaf and other terror threat elements,” Malacañang spokesperson Herminio Coloma said in a statement to reporters. “The Philippines extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family and stands in solidarity with Malaysia and Asean in resolutely fighting terrorism,” he added. Coloma said he issued the statement in reaction to Najib’s mention of the beheading as he addressed the nine other leaders of the region and their guests for the 27th Asean Leaders Summit. Aside from the Philippines and Malaysia, the other Asean members are Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia and Laos. It was the first time the Philippines confirmed the beheading that was first reported on Nov. 17, the eve of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) leaders meeting hosted by Manila. PH tells China: Set example, promote peace

INQUIRER.net By: Julliane Love de Jesus, November 21st, 2015 05:04 PM President Benigno Aquino III speaks at a closing press conference for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit at the International Media Center in Manila on Nov. 19. AFP KUALA LUMPUR—Amid the growing tension over the South China Sea, the Philippines has a message to China: Promote peace and set an example to other countries. With China being one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the more it has to take the lead in promoting peace and harmony among its neighbor countries, according to the Philippines. President Benigno Aquino III said this before a number of leaders at the 18th summit of the Association of South East Asian Nations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he had an opportunity to raise China’s incursion and bold reclamation activities in the disputed sea. “Excellencies, Your Majesty, China’s economy is larger than that of the entire Asean; its population is larger than that of all Asean nations combined. Any uncertainty in the region affects more of their people. Is it not therefore reasonable to expect China to take the lead in pushing for mechanisms that ensure stability, so that a peaceful rise may truly be achieved, not only by China, but for the entire region?” Aquino said in his intervention. “Likewise, all of our cultures tell us of the value of respecting elders; China claims to be among the oldest civilizations. We therefore hope that it sets an example for the rest of Read More …
