Bearwin 1st P1M KDOND winner

MANILA, Philippines – Dubbed as the Hari ng Sablay, comedian Bearwin Meily (photo) always fails to predict the amount his briefcase contains whenever a fellow Lucky Star plays in the hit game show Kapamilya Deal or No Deal (KDOND). But all of that changed last March 23 when his gut feel turned out to be right as his chosen briefcase number 14 contained the P1M jackpot, making him the first celebrity millionaire this season. It was an intense game as it boiled down to only two amounts in the money board — P100,000 and P1M. Bearwin got emotional when he declined the Banker’s offer of P614,000 for the sake of entertaining the viewers. “I am here to play. From the very beginning this briefcase was just assigned to me. It’s just money. P614,000 can be gone in just a month. I want to play,” said Bearwin before pressing the No Deal button. Excitement and joy then filled the studio as host Luis Manzano finally opened Bearwin’s briefcase. The Lucky Stars immediately ran up the stage and congratulated him. Entertainment ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “All I want for our episodes is just for us and for our viewers to have fun. It’s not about the money,” he explained. Will one of the remaining Lucky Stars bag the jackpot in the coming episodes? Kapamilya Deal or No Deal airs weekday afternoons at 5 p.m. on ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Gold.

Organizers fuse 2 festivals to draw crowds this summer

Brgy San Nicolas celebrated the annual Kaplag-Buwad Festival to commemorate the discovery of the image of the Sto. Nino. (Sun.Star file photo) LOCAL festivals can be a vehicle for promoting tourism and boosting the economy. That’s what organizers of the 8th Kaplag and Buwad Festival of Barangay San Nicolas Proper in Cebu City hope to achieve as it celebrates the activity from April 5 to May 10 this year. “We hope to showcase the cultural and the religious aspects as well as the livelihood component of San Nicolas,” said Cebu City Councilor Gerry Carillo, whose responsibilities include overseeing the social and livelihood services programs of the City Government. Kaplag commemorates the discovery in 1565 of a Sto. Niño image in the ruins of a fire in the San Nicolas district. The same district is known for its suppliers of buwad or dried fish. “In fact, this delicacy has become the top homecoming gift or pasalubong by tourists to their families and friends anywhere in the world,” said Carillo. One of the highlights of the month-long festival is its livelihood component. At least 100 food stalls will be put up so residents of San Nicolas District, composed of Barangays Calamba, San Nicolas, Pahina, Pasil, Suba and Sawang, can sell cooked dried fish and barbecue from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. The participants identified by the GSG (Ground Security Group) of 6, the program proponent, will be provided with seed capital of P5,000 on credit, which they can use to purchase items Read More …

MILF lauds PNoy’s review panel on Bangsamoro law

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front welcomed Friday the decision of President Benigno Aquino to tap ‘civilian leaders’ to review the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law describing it as a step to the right direction. “As a matter of principle, we do appreciate that because it is an initiative to the right direction and I think that would boost the chance of the BBL passing in Congress,”  Mohagher Iqbal, head of the MILF peace panel, told reporters before the launch of publications advocating peace in Mindanao. Asked if he thinks the BBL is the casualty of the Mamasapano clash, Iqbal replied in the negative. “I don’t call it as a casualty because the BBL is battered, but it is not yet down,” he said. He expressed hope that with the President and the MILF pushing the BBL forward “eventually the voice of reason will prevail over the voice of emotion.” Asked about the other options of the MILF if ever the BBL failed to get the nod of lawmakers, Iqbal said its only option now was to push the proposed law and have it passed by Congress. “The only option right now is the option of peace. The way of peace will prevail over the way of war and it’s basic in the MILF and in Islam that peace should always be the agenda and we will stick to that no matter what happens, the way of peace will stay until the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Mindanao,” the MILF leader said.  Iqbal Read More …

Coast Guard warns vs. colorums during Holy Week

A hooded penitent with a bloodied back prays while lying on his belly in front of an image of Jesus Christ during Maundy Thursday Lenten rites in Mandaluyong city, metro Manila March 28, 2013. Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday is the day Christians commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. Holy Week is celebrated in many Christian traditions during the week before Easter. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Filipinos expected to flock to the provinces for Holy Week were warned Wednesday against boarding colorum or unregistered vessels. The Philippine Coast Guard also encouraged the public to call its hotline 0917-PCG-DOTC (0917-724-3682) to report colorums or untoward incidents. In a post on its website, the Coast Guard warned against “colorum” inter-island passenger vessels this Holy Week and dry (summer) season. PCG Commandant Vice admiral Rodolfo Isorena said such colorum vessels may not comply with safety standards of the Maritime Industry Authority. “First and foremost, they won’t give any insurance to the passengers if and when a maritime incident occurs. Most of them also do not have life vests and carry defective life rafts onboard. These violations, obviously, if tolerated may result to a major tragedy which we don’t like to happen,” Isorena said. He added some ship operators exploit the huge number of passengers especially in areas where families will spend their vacations. In most cases, he said colorum owners operate in spots where major shipping lines may have a hard time accommodating the big volume of passengers. Meanwhile, the Coast Read More …
