Can Skoda bring something new to the SUV market?

ŠKODA VisionS: SUV Design Study to Premier in Geneva©Skoda (Relaxnews) – At the Geneva Motor Show Skoda will be taking the wraps off a larger SUV concept, the VisionS, which boasts a strong design language as well as room for all the family. Skoda is one of the few European marques with just one crossover in its range, the compact yet excellent Yeti. But as the company continues to enjoy record sales — 1.05 million cars sold worldwide in 2015 — it is going to have to start focusing more seriously on vehicles with an SUV aesthetic if it wants to continue building on its popularity. According to new data published on Tuesday from Jato Dynamics, when total European sales for 2015 are added up, for the first time in history, SUVs outperformed both subcompact and compact cars, the vehicular heartbeat of the continent. SUV registrations jumped in all of the 29 countries the organization monitors and now represent 22.5% of the European market or 3.2 million vehicles. “Similar to the shift towards SUVs in the US car market, Europeans are clearly favoring these vehicles. In 2015 this segment drove most of the growth as more consumers moved away from the traditional segments and MPVs, towards SUVs and crossovers,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Automotive Analyst at JATO Dynamics. What’s more, some of the biggest gains have been in the mid-size and large SUV categories, hence the VisionS. Though just a show car, something very much like it, with the same Read More …

BCDA posts 51% jump in revenues

Philippine Daily Inquirer By: Amy R. Remo, February 1st, 2016 11:58 PM STATE-RUN Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) performed better than expected in 2015 as the agency’s revenues rose by 51 percent to P10.7 billion on the back of windfall profit from the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx). In a briefing Monday, BCDA president and CEO Arnel Paciano D. Casanova said the consistent increases in the agency’s revenues over the past years were due to “good financial housekeeping, which has created more value for assets and led to record increases in revenues.” Boosting last year’s revenues were the P3.5 billion upfront payment made by the Manila North Tollways Corp. (MNTC). The agreement, which would be in effect for 28 years until 2043, gave MNTC the responsibility over the management services, toll collection, traffic safety and security management, toll road and facilities maintenance and all necessary support services required for the 94-kilometer SCTEx. Gross toll revenues generated from the SCTEx grew by 22 percent to P1.45 billion in 2015 from the previous year’s P1.18 billion. This was due to the growing number of vehicles plying the said expressway. The BCDA also secured P12.5 billion in investment commitments and P312 million in cash inflows from new business contracts for areas being managed by the agency, including Clark Green City, special economic zones, and Metro Manila military camps. As of end 2015, BCDA’s ending cash balance stood at P17.5 billion, which the agency is reinvesting in new projects that can create value and benefit for Read More …

Filipino in Virginia wins $1M in national Powerball lottery

Asian Journal / INQUIRER.net News Partner By: Allyson Escobar, January 28th, 2016 09:00 PM Irene and Teofilo Mesina of Virginia Beach, Virginia, claiming their $1 million prize. POWERBALL PHOTO LOS ANGELES–While most people were closely watching the national Powerball lottery drawing live on television on Wednesday,  January 13, an 82-year-old Filipino man from Virginia Beach, Virginia was not one of them. It wasn’t until he checked online that he realized he had a winning ticket. Teofilo Mesina won $1 million – before taxes – from the record $1.5 billion jackpot, after correctly picking five numbers. He missed only the Powerball number. “Not many people win that kind of money,” Mesina told The Virginian-Pilot on January 19, as he claimed his prize. Mesina bought his ticket from a 7-Eleven at Lynnhaven Parkway and Salem Road in Virginia Beach. “I would buy just sometimes,” he said. “I played a mix of my own numbers, and some computer-picked numbers.” His numbers – 04, 08, 19, 27 and 34 – were selected from significant dates for loved ones, he said. (A friend was born in April, the fourth month of the year, so he chose number 4.) When Mesina looked at the numbers, he first thought he was misreading. He checked with his wife, Irene, then other family members to make sure he had won. “I was shocked; I couldn’t believe it,” Irene Mesina said. Including Messina, 72 ticket holders were $1 million winners — 12 of them from California. There were eight $2 Read More …

Poe: Aquino cannot be compelled to attend Mamasapano probe

Relatives and supporters of the SAF 44, members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) who were killed during the Mamasapano clash, march along EDSA on Sunday. The march turned out to be a solemn memorial honoring the troopers who died on January 25. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe said Friday President Benigno Aquino III should not and cannot be compelled to attend the reopening of the Mamasapano probe next week. “Ang Pangulo ay mayroong immunity. Hindi naman natin siya pwedeng pilitin na dumalo sa ganitong pagdinig,” Poe said in a press statement. However, if the President would give an affidavit, it can be used by the committee. “Siguro kung magkakaroon ng affidavit ang ating Pangulo na sinumpaan din, pwedeng gamitin ito na basehan,” she said. Poe heads the Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs which conducted the probe on the Mamasapano operation which led to the death of 44 Special Action Force commandos last year. The probe will be reopened on January 27 upon the request of Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile. Poe called on invited resource persons to attend the hearing but also warned returning resource persons that they would be held liable if found to have withheld information that they already had during the series of hearings and executive sessions last year. “Ang puno’t dulo ng pagdinig na ito ay para malaman kung ano talaga ang nangyari. Dapat boluntaryo na nilang ibinigay kung ano man ang nalalaman nila. Kaya hindi rin Read More …

Facelifted Ferrari FF to get February debut

The current Ferrari FF is a supercar for all the family. ©Ferrari (Relaxnews) – If you are an existing Ferrari client then you will have received an official invitation to a special event on February 15 that promises to show you a “Whole New World.” The current FF is Ferrari’s family car: a true four-seat load-lugger with iPads in the back to keep the kids distracted and a huge 651bhp 6.3-liter V12 at the front to keep the driver more than happy. It can drag a family from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 208mph (335km/h). It’s also got a very clever four-wheel drive system so that more of that power can be used on the road, rather than simply on the track. And, more importantly, so that the car lends itself even more to being a classic European GT, one that can as confidently navigate snowy mountain passes as easily as it can sun-soaked Rivieras. However, after five years in production it’s starting to show its age  — even if it was the world’s first car to officially come with Apple’s CarPlay — and the new model is expected to keep the overall hatchback shape but with sharper lines and updated detailing that will bring it in line with the new 488 GTB and California T. And, now that the company has launched an even more potent version of its F12 Berlinetta, the tdf, which offers a staggering 780hp on tap without help from turbochargers Read More …

Market volatility to continue

MANILA, Philippines – The local equities market is expected to experience continued volatility this week amid a slew of negative developments on the external front, said Astro del Castillo, managing director of First Grade Finance Inc. Jason Escartin of 2TradeAsia.com said investors would also be looking at the release of the country’s fourth quarter gross domestic product performance on Thursday. “It’s a wait and see for now,” he said. Escartin said with the country still considered as one of the fastest-growing economies in the region, better-than-expected results could douse off part of the pessimism, but there are no clear signals in place yet to cap the “global volatility overhang.” Escartin sees the index at 6,100 points, with secondary support at 6,000 and resistance at 6,300. As for external developments, Escartin said investors would also be looking at the US Federal Reserve’s next move. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “Investors will be anticipating the Fed’s stance on the recent spate of selloffs in global financial markets, especially to the extent the current macro picture impacts two critical factors: labor and inflation outlook. The key point of interest will be on the timing of the next rate hike.  Any consideration to delay might be lauded and could encourage slight bargain hunting,” Escartin said. Another factor is the oil prices, which have been spiraling down the past weeks. After the International Energy Agency (IEA) raised the alert, the world could “drown in oversupply” as Iran re-enters the market, some Read More …

Odds bleak for reversing veto on SSS pension: Villar

COCONUT WEEK. Senator Cynthia Villar, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture & Food, tours the exhibits during the 29th National Coconut Week and 2nd International Coconut Festival & Trade Fair at the Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City. The senator was the guest speaker in the said event organized by the Philippine Coconut Authority. In her keynote address, Villar undercores the importance of supporting the coconut industry especially the micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMES), to be more competitive. She also cites the need to help our farmers who belong to the country’s poorest sector. (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – Lawmakers are unlikely to succeed in overriding President Aquino’s veto on the P2,000 monthly increase for Social Security System (SSS) pensioners, Senator Cynthia Villar admitted Friday. Villar said that at least 16 senators – two-thirds of the total number of members of the upper chamber – are needed to override the president’s veto. This proves a gargantuan task, Villar said, because senators seldom even reach a quorum of 13 as the election period nears. She said getting two-thirds of the House of Representative, or 217 congressmen, to reverse the veto of the President is even more difficult because many of them are in the provinces. “Dapat naman realistic tayo. Hindi natin ipinapangako iyung something na hirap tayo. Kasi kahit kami’y makakuha ng two-thirds sa Senate, paano ang House, 280 [representatives]. Ang two-thirds noon, mabigat,” she said. The senator emphasized that allies of the President in Congress may hesitate to Read More …

Race on to revive PH car manufacturing sector

Philippine Daily Inquirer By: Amy R. Remo, January 9th, 2016 12:12 AM Hopes for a resurgence in the Philippine automotive manufacturing industry could not have been stronger and more apparent last year especially after a new government fiat was released targeting to do just that. At least for the biggest automotive assemblers in the country, the promise of a P27-billion incentive package being dangled under Executive Order No. 182, which provides for the implementation of the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) Program, was deemed worth looking into despite the “ambitious” requirements set by the government. Trade officials are highly optimistic that the program will take off, as they anticipate applications to start coming in after the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) released the implementing rules and regulations last Dec. 19. A commitment was also made on the part of the trade agency to fast-track the applications for the CARS Program to enable local automotive assemblers to take advantage of what was perceived to be the third wave of Asean motorization. Only two assemblers, Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp., have been vocal and concrete in expressing their interest to participate in a program that, if successful, is seen to attract more than P27 billion in new parts manufacturing investments among others. The program also aims to produce at least 600,000 vehicles, generate some 200,000 new jobs, and spur economic activity estimated to be worth P300 billion. The resulting contribution to gross domestic product is estimated at Read More …
