Firm behind Parklane to boost investments

TOURISM INVESTMENTS. Alan Ting, a director of the Five Power Ventures Inc. board, discusses the company’s investments in tourism products. (CONTRIBUTED FOTO) FIVE Power Ventures Inc., the holding company of the Cebu Parklane International Hotel, is increasing its investments in tourism by developing three different tourism products in the next five years. The expansion, which covers the development of a beachfront resort in Cordova, a mountain resort in Busay and a condotel in the city, will cost the firm an estimated P300 million in investments, according to Alan Ting, a director of the Five Power Ventures Inc. board. A six-hectare property in Barangay Babag, Busay will be converted into a mountain resort with 50 villas and a 5,000-square-meter flower and organic vegetable farm, he said. Cebu Parklane International Hotel General Manager Cenelyn Manguilimotan said they are completing the requirements with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). She said they have also requested the DENR to inspect the site to determine which part of the property still falls under the protected area. To cater to long-staying guests, the firm will also develop an 80-room condo-hotel in the city to complement its 241-room hotel. According to Manguilimotan, the project sits on a 1,300-square-meter area will be an eight-storey mid-rise building, with two floors dedicated to commercial spaces. “We intend to build a project intended for long-staying guests because this is one of our strong markets. Pacquiao, the boxer

Once again, the Filipino nation rejoiced on the recent success of Manny Pacquiao in his boxing bout with New Yorker challenger Cris Algerie. At 35 years old, I think Pacquio lost some of his lethal punching power which has catapulted him into an international boxing superstar. Despite the fact that he has not scored a knock-out victory since getting floored by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012, Pacquiao is still the perfect symbol of the hopes and aspirations of the Filipino people, particularly the poor. While watching the Pacquiao versus Algerie fight in a hotel in Burlingame, San Francisco, people watching the fight in the television all agreed that the “fighting pride of the Philippines” is the most effective morale booster of a country that has been rocked by scandals for years due to unabated corruption among elected public officials. Most Filipinos think that the only good news that can lift up the spirits of Filipinos is when Pacquiao steps into the ring, fights and wins. Pacquiao is also an effective unifying leader with the ability to inspire others because of what he has accomplished in life. Pacquiao has transformed his success in boxing into other fields. He is now a singer, once a television host, an actor, a professional basketball player and coach, and a Congressman representing the province of Sarangani. Pacquiao has long been rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world by sporting news and boxing websites, as well as the ESPN and Sports Illustrated, for his Read More …

PNoy’s good ratings won’t deter critics—Palace

Malacañang on Wednesday expressed appreciation for President Benigno Aquino III’s improving satisfaction rating, although it admitted that these figures would not be enough to deter critics. At a press briefing, deputy presidential spokesperson Usec. Abigail Valte said the recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) poll will not stop critics from calling Aquino a “lame duck” president. “As to what the critics will say because of the numbers, I will leave that to them. I am sure marami pa ho silang masasabi despite the numbers going up,” Valte told reporters. Results of an SWS survey published earlier in the day showed that Aquino got a “good” +39 net satisfaction rating for the fourth quarter of the year—a five-percentage-point rise from his figures last quarter.  The President’s rating continued to bounce back after it dropped to an all-time low during the second quarter of 2014 at the height of the controversies surrounding the administrations’ disbursement acceleration program (DAP).  The DAP was declared partially unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, but the high court’s ruling is still under appeal by the executive. Valte nevertheless said that Aquino’s improving rating proves that the administration is doing a “good job,” and that Filipinos appreciate government’s efforts to improve their lives. “We extend our appreciation to the people for their continued support for President Aquino and his administration,” the Palace official said. She added that these figures “will just encourage the administration to push further with the reforms.” —NB, GMA News

Speaker Belmont hits BIR silence on Mighty tobacco taxes

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines–Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has questioned the “deafening silence” of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR)on Mighty Corp.’s alleged fraudulent practices to evade hundreds of millions of pesos in tax and duty payments that its rivals claim have allowed it to corner a quarter of the cigarette market in such a short time. Belmonte said he would not allow a company like Mighty to sabotage Congress’ decade-long efforts to extract more revenues from cigarette and alcoholic drinks. “I have to ask the oversight committee to give me a report on Mighty’s operations. It’s really a BIR affair but we have not been hearing about this. Their silence is really deafening,” Belmonte said at the weekly “Ugnayan sa Batasan” press conference. Suddenly a big company Belmonte has ordered the commissioning of a legislative oversight panel as provided under Republic Act No. 10351, also known as “An Act Restructuring the Excise Tax on Alcohol and Tobacco Product,” to look into whether private companies were paying the right taxes; whether government agencies such as the BIR and Bureau of Customs were collecting the proper taxes and duties; and whether the sin tax collections were being used for the designated beneficiaries, specifically the Department of Health’s universal healthcare program. Belmonte noted that the BIR had been asked by some cigarette manufacturers to look into tax evasion charges against Mighty but he was wondering why no inquiry had yet been made. “Congress might as well find out why Read More …

7 of 10 at risk of chronic illnesses with vitamin D deficiency

MANILA, Philippines – With a number of Filipinos aggressively taking on healthy lifestyles, it is surprising to know that many people are still afflicted by osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases. Many factors may contribute to the development of these illnesses and one of the most talked about by experts today is vitamin D deficiency. A study commissioned by pharmaceutical leader United Laboratories, Inc. (Unilab) found that seven out of 10 working Filipinos suffer from vitamin D deficiency. Of the over 5,000 participants tested, more than 70 percent were found to be vitamin D deficient without them even knowing it. The study also found that there is a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among women. Hi-Precision Diagnostics, a Department of Health licensed medical facility, collected, assayed, and interpreted the results based on international laboratory standards, with 30 ng/ml blood level of vitamin D serving as the baseline for deficiency. Those who registered below the level set were deemed vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D synthesizes calcium and phosphorus from the food we eat, keeping bones strong and capable of self-recuperation. Aside from making the body’s defense system respond faster and more efficient against foreign invaders, vitamin D also stabilizes heart and blood pressure, regulates insulin secretion by the pancreas, and promotes proper muscle formation and brain development. The sun is the body’s natural source of vitamin D and those who shun or have very little exposure to it become susceptible to vitamin D deficiency. Having dark skin, staying indoors Read More …
