Wesley So is an interested spectator, along with members of the media, in the game between Hikaru Nakamura and Alexander Onischuk in the US Chess Championships. PHOTO BY LENNART OOTES. LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Wesley So ended the US Chess Championships with flourish, beating grandmaster Keyden Troff in the final round while Hikaru Nakamura and Ray Robson maintained their 1-2 finish with similar impressive wins in Saint Louis. So prevailed over the 16-year-old Troff in 42 moves for his second straight victory following a 9th round forfeit, while the issues that distracted him in the tournament went full blown into the open, with his mother, Lenny So, granting a no-holds-barred interview with a chess website. The 27-year-old Nakamura, the No. 3 in the world, prevailed over Alexander Onischuk and remained as the only unbeaten player in the 12-man tournament. He captured the $45,000 first prize, finishing the tournament with eight points while Robson, playing surprisingly strong, beat favorite whipping boy Timur Gareev, to finish with 7.5 points and won $30,000. So managed to finish third with 6.5 points, despite suffering four loses, including the 9th round forfeit to Varuzhan Akobian — his most losses in a tournament. The 21-year-old won $20,000 while Onishuck was fourth and won $15,000. Akobian and defending champion Gata Gamsky shared fifth and sixth, each with 5.5 points, winning $11,000 each. But while the on-board results were pretty much expected, the off-the-board drama was not. After a long silence, Lenny So fired some well-directed shots at Read More …

International lawyers plead with Widodo

Indonesian President Joko Widodo AFP PHOTO/ROMEO GACAD CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Philippines—The Belgium-based and United Nations-accredited International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) has asked Indonesian President Joko Widodo to overturn the death sentence on Mary Jane Veloso due to the lack of legal services and representation accorded her during her drug trafficking trial. Jeanne Mirer, IADL president, wrote Widodo on April 9 to express her group’s opposition to the death sentence the Indonesian government handed to Veloso of Cabanatuan City in the Philippines. The National Union of People’s Lawyers, an IADL affiliate, gave the Inquirer a copy of Mirer’s letter on Sunday. 2 copies Copies were also sent to President Aquino and Christof Heyns, UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions. Veloso was convicted of attempting to smuggle 2.611 kilograms of heroin into Indonesia in 2010. She was caught with the heroin at the airport. Recently, Indonesia’s Supreme Court rejected her application for a judicial review of her case. She is set to be executed later this month. “We are gravely concerned about [Veloso’s] case because of the numerous reported violations of her human rights, including the right to a fair trial and due process as guaranteed under both domestic and international law,” Mirer said in her letter. Poverty IADL was founded in 1946 with René Cassin, principal author of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as its first president. Mirer said information gathered by IADL showed that Veloso, a mother of two, was forced by poverty to work abroad. “Her Read More …

World records in reunion, pizza eating, gargles eyed

Filipinos on Sunday attempted to set world records in holding a reunion of those who had been born in the same hospital, the fastest time in eating a 12-inch diameter pizza, and the most number of mouthwash users in one place. By nightfall, thousands had already assembled for the mouthwash event at the celebration of the World Record Week in the Philippines held at Market! Market! in Taguig City. The Medical City in Pasig City gathered 1,221 people at the mall’s Central Plaza to claim the Largest Reunion of People Born in the Same Hospital title. People of all ages, including 1-month-old babies, were placed in a holding area for about 10 minutes under the sweltering sun. Guinness adjudicator Pravin Patel announced that the Medical City, in fact, broke the previous record set by the Tung Wah Group Hospitals in Hong Kong in 2011—all of 958 souls. 1,000 respondents The Medical City corporate communications manager Anne de la Cruz told the Inquirer that the registration for the event took about a month, with more than a thousand responding just on the eve of the reunion. “We required from them only their birth certificates and physical presence during the 10-minute holding period required by Guinness,” De la Cruz said. To be verified For the Fastest Time to Eat a 12-inch Diameter Pizza record, Shakeys lured 12 challengers to consume the pizza in less than 41.31 seconds, the record set by Burbank, California. The results of the attempt, however, will still be Read More …

Solon backs parents' group's plan to question K to 12 before Supreme Court

A party-list lawmaker has thrown his support behind a parents’ group’s plan to stop the implementation of the controversial K-12 program that extends high school education by two years as he insisted that the Department of Education is still unprepared to roll out the initiative. Abakada party-list Rep. Jonathan dela Cruz said the Parents for Children’s Education (PACE) has the right to challenge Republic Act 10533, otherwise known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, before the Supreme Court. The group claims parents were not consulted before the Enhanced Basic Education Act, which had to undergo the legislative process at both houses of Congress, was signed into law by President Benigno Aquino III. The legislative process includes public hearings to seek input from stakeholders. “[The lack of consultation] can be a good basis for a challenge as the consultations before and after the enactment of the law were inadequate. More importantly, the commitments for the law’s proper implementation remain inadequate and incomplete,” he said in a text message. PACE founding chair Rey Vargas told GMA News Online that parents were not asked for their opinion on the K-12 program when it was being deliberated in Congress even though they are considered as one of the primary stakeholders. He said his group plans to attach a document containing 10,000 signatures of parents who oppose the program when they file the petition before the Supreme Court on April 20. Shocker: Wesley So forfeits 9th round game in US Chess

Wesley so appears shocked after forfeiting his 9th round game in the US Chess Championships. PHOTO BY LENNART OOTES LAS VEGAS, Nevada — In a tournament where nothing seems to go right for him, Wesley so suffered the ultimate ignominy, defaulting his 9th round game in what amounts to a rookie mistake in the US Chess Championships in Saint Louis. So was declared to have defaulted his game with Varuszhan Akobian when he wrote on a piece of paper, instead of the official score sheet, in violation of tournament rules. The 21-year-old So, who now has lost more games in a single tournament than at any time other in his career, wrote a seemingly harmless note to himself and left it lying down on his table. He wrote, ” Double check. Triple check. Use your time.” “I have been having trouble concentrating so I wrote a note to myself on a piece of paper (not my score sheet),” So explained in a Facebook posting. According to Chief Arbiter Tony Rich, So wrote “words of general encouragement and advice” to himself on a piece of paper below his score sheet, which FIDE rules forbid. So forfeited the game after only six moves and one hour of play. Rich said he warned So twice earlier about writing notes to himself and it was his third offense. “I mentioned to Wesley twice earlier in the event that using notes or other sources of information is not allowed and strictly forbidden, according to the FIDE Read More …

Obama scores China bullying in South China Sea

President Barack Obama. AP FILE PHOTO KINGSTON, Jamaica—US President Barack Obama said Washington is concerned China is using its “sheer size and muscle” to push around smaller nations in the South China Sea, just hours after Beijing gave a detailed defense of its creation of artificial islands in the contested waterway. China’s rapid reclamation around seven reefs in the Spratly archipelago of the South China Sea has alarmed other claimants, such as the Philippines and Vietnam, and drawn growing criticism from US government officials and the military. While the new islands will not overturn US military superiority in the region, workers are building ports and fuel storage depots and possibly two airstrips that experts have said would allow Beijing to project power deep into the maritime heart of Southeast Asia. “Where we get concerned with China is where it is not necessarily abiding by international norms and rules, and is using its sheer size and muscle to force countries into subordinate positions,” Obama told a town-hall event in Jamaica on Thursday ahead of a Caribbean summit in Panama. “We think this can be solved diplomatically, but just because the Philippines or Vietnam are not as large as China doesn’t mean that they can just be elbowed aside,” he said. The United States has no claim of its own, but broadly supports its Asian allies against Chinese pressure and has asserted that freedom of navigation is in its national interest. China rejoinder Beijing immediately rejected Obama’s comments, saying it only seeks Read More …

Filipino maid rescued after FB cry for help

A Filipino maid was rescued by Philippine embassy officials from her employer in Bahrain after she posted a desperate cry for help on the social networking site Facebook. Staff at the Philippine embassy were alerted to the plight of Abby Luna, 28, who claimed she was raped and beaten by her employer’s son, after she posted a three-minute video on her Facebook page on Thursday morning. READ: OFW in Bahrain seeks help via video Luna’s tearful plea made the rounds online, attracted about 78,000 shares and 19,000 likes, reaching the Philippine authorities who made her rescue possible. “The rescue was prompted by the video message…She is now under the care of our embassy,” Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson Charles Jose told AFP. Philippine embassy officials and staff from Luna’s employment agency picked her up from her employer’s house, Jose said, adding that police were investigating the incident. Luna’s alleged assailant denied to police that he attacked her, Ricky Aragon, vice consul at the Philippine embassy in Bahrain, told AFP by phone. In the three-minute long video, which appears to have been made on a webcam, a sobbing Luna accused her employer’s “drug addict” son of raping her. She also posted a written appeal for viewers to contact the Philippine embassy on her behalf. “Help me get out of here. I’m scared. Until now, my genitals hurt. My leg is bruised. He (attacker) punched my leg to immobilize me,” said Luna, a resident of Los Baños, Laguna, who had been Read More …
