SAF men in Mamasapano operation may receive highest PNP award

Some of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) commandos involved in the operation in Mamasapano town in Maguindanao last January 25 may receive the highest police award. At a press briefing on Friday, PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. said the police force’s Special Promotions and Awards Deliberation Board is looking into awarding Medalya ng Kagitingan to the deserving policemen who took part in the operation to arrest two wanted terrorists in the area. “Sa pakikipag-usap ko sa kanila, tinitignan na nila ang posibilidad na magkaroon ng award para sa iba pa,” he said. The SAF troopers were able to kill one of its two targets, Malaysian bomber Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan, although the other one, Filipino bomb-maker Abdulbasit Usman, was able to escape. The operation, however, led to a clash with Moro rebels in the area, resulting in the deaths of over 60 people, 44 of them SAF members. The Medalya ng Kagitingan is equivalent to the Medal of Valor in the military, which is the highest award for combat. The National Police Commission (Napolcom), in a memorandum, said “in order to justify this award, a member of the Philippine National Police must perform in action a deed of personal bravery and self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty so conspicuous as to distinguish himself clearly above his comrades in the performance of more than ordinary hazardous service.” Cerbo said the award entitles the recipient to a monthly financial assistance. He said the board is Read More …

Napolcom OKs posthumous promotion for SAF 44

The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has approved the posthumous  promotion of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos killed in the January 25 clash with Moro rebels in Mamasapano, Maguindanao. In a statement released Friday, the Napolcom approved the promotion after Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina, officer-in-charge of the Philippine National Police (PNP), made the recommendation. It said the SAF commandos were promoted “for demonstrating acts of conspicuous courage and gallantry in action at the risk of their lives over and beyond the call of duty that resulted in their untimely death.” The fatalities were part of a large SAF contingent sent to Mamasapano to arrest two high-profile terrorist targets. The covert operation, however, led to clash with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and its breakaway group the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. Interior and Secretary Mar Roxas, who chairs Napolcom, noted that although outnumbered by “a superior enemy force,” the SAF commandos “held their ground, fought up to their last breath and accomplished their mission.” Benefits Meanwhile, the statement also quoted Napolcom Vice Chairman and Executive Officer Eduardo U. Escueta as saying that the legal spouses of the 28 married SAF members and a legitimate child of one trooper shall receive the following: — gratuity equivalent to one (1) year basic salary,— burial expenses equivalent to three (3) months basic salary, and— monthly pension for five (5) years equivalent to 80 percent of the decedent’s basic monthly pay. On the other hand, it said the surviving parents Read More …

Revilla is currently detained at the PNP Custodial Center over his graft and plunder charges in connection with the alleged pork barrel scam. (Updated 1:36 p.m.) The Senate has summoned a telecommunication company to provide a copy of the Jan. 25 text messages between President Benigno Aquino III and resigned Philippine National Police chief Director General Alan Purisima. The office of Senate President Franklin Drilon said Tuesday that a subpoena addressed to Smart Communications president and chief executive officer Napoleon Nazareno was signed Friday. Order of Malta turns over 700 houses for Yolanda survivors, eyes further cooperation with PHL

The head of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta on Tuesday turned over 700 newly constructed houses to the Philippine government for survivors of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which hit central Philippines over a year ago. Fra’ Matthew Festing, Prince and Grandmaster of the Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, gave a symbolic key to the houses to President Benigno Aquino III during a ceremony in Malacañang. The housing units were built in Basey town in Samar, and on Bantayan Island in Cebu—two areas which were directly hit by Yolanda in November 2013. During the turnover ceremony, Festing trumpeted how his Order managed to extend help—particularly medicine, food, hygiene kits and tools for farmers—three days after Yolanda ravaged central Philippines. “The relationship between your country and the Order is not one between donor and beneficiary. Indeed, we operate together as partners, sharing common objectives for those who suffer and those who are in need,” Festing said. “We stand by our commitment to work with your people, accompanying the delivery of goods and the construction of infrastructure, with solidarity and brotherhood, embodied in our shared values,” he added. In November 2013, Yolanda cut a swath of devastation across central Philippines, leaving 6,300 people dead and displacing over 1.4 million families. Cooperation agreement in the works After a meeting with Aquino, the Order of Malta head also expressed interest in entering into a cooperation agreement with the Philippines. He did not give further details. In response Read More …

Gun-cleaning a common excuse of people attempting to commit suicide –Dr. Fortun

People who attempted to commit suicide by shooting themselves usually use accidental firing of the weapon as excuse to cover up their act, Dr. Raquel Fortun said Tuesday, citing her experiences as a forensic pathologist. “From my experience, ‘yang ganyang senaryo ang madalas na ginagamit na excuse para sabihin na ang isang tao [ay] ‘di nagpakamatay,” Fortun said, in response to “News To Go” anchor Howie Severino’s question on whether it is common for gun owners to accidentally shoot themselves while cleaning their guns. “I have encountered that a lot na sasabihin hindi siya nagbaril sa sarili, ang nangyari, it was an accidental fire kasi naglilinis lang siya ng baril,” she added. The question was in relation to the claim of the family of Cavite Vice Governor Jolo Revilla that he accidentally shot himself on his right upper chest while he was cleaning his .40-caliber Glock pistol on Saturday morning inside their home in Ayala Alabang in Muntinlupa City. Though now in a stable condition, Revilla, son of detained Senator Ramon Bong Revilla Jr., remains at the intensive care unit of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Muntinlupa City following the incident. Safety procedures Fortun said that though it is hard to conclude right now on what really transpired during the incident, there were safety procedures that should have been observed by Revilla. “Common sense will tell you, and I’m sure the PNP (Philippine National Police) will agree kasi nagbibigay sila ng mga gun safety seminar… na kapag naglilinis Read More …
