Ebola watch continues; more quarantine facilities needed

This undated file image made available by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows the Ebola virus. AP FILE PHOTO/CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL MANILA, Philippines—With the 21-DAY quarantine for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and other travelers from Ebola-stricken countries continuing, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Tuesday it was looking for other places to hold them temporarily. DOH spokesperson Lyndon Lee Suy said the department was considering putting up quarantine facilities in Luzon and the Visayas, preferably near airports. “There are areas currently being surveyed as possible quarantine areas, including Fort Magsaysay, and we welcome such a generous offer from the local government,” Lee Suy told reporters in an interview. Nueva Ecija Gov. Aurelio Umali had proposed that a portion of the sprawling military camp in the province be turned into a quarantine facility. In the meantime, Lee Suy said, arriving passengers from the Ebola-stricken West African countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea would continue to be held for 21 days in the former administration building of Nayong Pilipino in Pasay City. “For now, we will continue to use that one near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport,” he said. Lee Suy said the government had never stopped imposing the 21-day quarantine on all passengers arriving from Ebola-afflicted countries. “There was no letup in screening passengers from those countries even if the people had lost interest in the issue the past few months,” he said. On Monday, the DOH announced that arriving passengers from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea Read More …

Erwiana: From domestic helper to human rights activist

Indonesian former maid Erwiana Sulistyaningsih attends a press conference in Hong Kong on February 10, 2015 after her employer was convicted of beating her in a “torture” case that sparked international outrage and spotlighted the plight of migrant domestic workers in the Middle East and Asia. AFP HONG KONG — From a “simple village girl” too petrified to report the torture she was facing, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih has become a confident advocate of workers’ rights in a city where maids often live in slave-like conditions. Shocking pictures emerged of a severely beaten Sulistyaningsih looking frail and skinny and in a critical condition at an Indonesian hospital in January last year, and focused the spotlight on the rights of domestic helpers in Hong Kong. The photos and her account of the abuse she received shocked the Asian financial hub and sparked anger amongst the migrant worker community, renewing concerns over the abuse of domestic helpers. Sulistyaningsih, who according to the judge’s verdict “described herself as a simple village girl, coming from a village where her parents are farmers”, was sent back to Indonesia by her former employer, Law Wan-tung, when she became too weak to walk. She told the court that Law covered her in makeup to hide her injuries for the trip to the airport and strapped a nappy on her as she could not use the toilet. A little over a year later, a healthier looking Sulistyaningsih was back in Hong Kong and won a landmark case against Law, who Read More …

‘Tortured’ Indonesian maid’s Hong Kong employer found guilty

Indonesian former maid Erwiana Sulistyaningsih (C) leaves the court of justice in Hong Kong on February 10, 2015 after her employer was convicted of beating and starving the Indonesian maid in a “torture” case that sparked international outrage and spotlighted the plight of migrant domestic workers in the Middle East and Asia. AFP HONG KONG — A Hong Kong woman was convicted Tuesday of beating and starving her Indonesian maid in a “torture” case that sparked international outrage and spotlighted the plight of migrant domestic workers in the Middle East and Asia. The verdict, read out to a courtroom packed with journalists and activists, was met with cheers by supporters of Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, a former domestic helper who has become the face of a campaign for improved workers’ rights in the financial hub. Pictures of the injuries sustained by Sulistyaningsih, who was admitted to hospital in her home country emaciated and in a critical condition, at the hands of mother-of-two Law Wan-tung fuelled anger in Indonesia and shocked Hong Kong. “She was, for want of a better word, a prisoner on those premises,” Judge Amanda Woodcock said, referring to Sulistyaningsih, who told the court she had been “tortured.” “I am sure she was telling the truth,” Woodcock said, adding: “She was completely isolated. “She did not complain about the abuse because of fear… When Erwiana left Hong Kong, she was a shadow of her former self.” “You are remanded in custody,” Woodcock told Law, after announcing that the 44-year-old had Read More …

Man convicted of preying on undocumented immigrants

Convicted sexual predator Jeffrey Bugai SAN FRANCISCO –A jury on February 3 found Jeffrey Bugai, 36, of San Francisco, guilty on 17 felony counts, for he preying upon undocumented immigrants, with some of his crimes being committed with the use of a handgun and others by drugging the victims. “The facts of this case highlight why we desperately need immigration reform,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “When victims are afraid to come forward and cooperate with authorities because of their immigration status the whole community suffers,” Gascon explained. “Had some of the undocumented victims come forward earlier, authorities could have intervened and prevented others from being victimized by this predator,” he added. Evidence presented at trial showed that Bugai, a licensed security guard, would lure unsuspecting male victims to his house to sexually assault them. Bugai, under the color of authority, used a handgun to intimidate his victim on at least one occasion.  In other instances he drugged his victims in order to make them comply with his demands.  In one instance, Bugai used his fictitious authority to extort money from an unsuspecting victim. Bugai victimized five adult males between January 2008 and the end of March 2014.  The jury found him guilty of sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, sodomy, assault, sexual battery, forcible oral copulation, attempted forcible oral copulation, false imprisonment, extortion and unlawfully administering a drug. He faces life in prison and will be sentenced on March 6. This successful prosecution would not have been possible without the hard work Read More …

With each passing day, it is becoming increasingly clear that the idea of a Bangsamoro is a bad idea. Just as the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) spearheaded by former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was a bad idea (and declared unconstitutional in 2008 by the Supreme Court). Just as the failed Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) during the 1990s was a bad idea …

Europe wants transparent probe on Mamapasano clash

The 42 bodies of the SAF 44 commandos inside the Camp Bagong Diwa multi-purpose hall. JOAN BONDOC MANILA, Philippines—Europe on Friday called for a transparent investigation into the Jan. 25 deadly clash in Mamapasano, Maguindanao province, saying this would help restore public trust in the Mindanao peace process. The call was made by the European Union Delegation and the Embassies of the EU member states in the Philippines, which expressed their condolences to the families of the 44 Philippine National Police Special Action Force troopers who were killed in a clash with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) guerrillas. The 44 police commandos were killed after a law enforcement operation was executed targeting Malaysian bomb expert Zulkifli bin Hir, alias “Marwan.” DNA testing by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation indicated that he was also killed in the incident. “In the last three years, the Mindanao peace process has brought about increased hope and optimism for future security and prosperity. However, this event has reminded us that this cannot be taken for granted and that violence can still erupt unexpectedly,” the EU statement said. The groups on Friday said the investigations to be done by both the government and the MILF into the incident was “necessary and a welcome step” as they acknowledge the reiteration of both sides of their commitment to the peace process. “A full and transparent investigation will contribute to the reestablishment of confidence by the public in the process,” the EU Read More …
