DFA says 3 US ships canceled port visits

In this Oct. 17, 2014, photo, a US marine walks inside the USS Peleliu, where US Marine Pfc. Joseph Scott Pemberton was said to be detained after allegedly killing Filipino transgender Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude at the Subic Bay free port, Zambales province. Nine US Navy ships scheduled to arrive in Subic in November until December have decided to cancel their port calls due to “anti-American sentiments” in the country after Pemberton was implicated in the slaying of Laude, a group of business owners said. AP PHOTO/AARON FAVILA MANILA, Philippines–Three US Navy ships have canceled their scheduled port visits to the country this month for operational reasons, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday. “The reconsideration of the port visits is a normal occurrence as US ships are deployed in many areas in the Pacific and are subject to changing operational requirements,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said at a press briefing, citing a US Embassy diplomatic note. The Inquirer reported Monday that the Subic Bay Freeport Chamber of Commerce had said that nine US vessels had scrapped scheduled port calls because of “anti-American sentiments” stemming from the slaying of Filipino transgender Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude on Oct. 11 in an Olongapo City motel. US Marine Pfc. Joseph Scott Pemberton is under detention at Camp Aguinaldo in connection with the killing, which has provoked new protests by leftist groups against the United States and calls for the scrapping of the Visiting Forces Agreement between Manila and Washington. Group welcomes cancellation of US ships’ Subic port calls

OLONGAPO CITY, Zambales, Philippines—If there is any group here that is elated to know nine American ships have canceled their port calls, it is the organization that works to save bar workers and women in the city from prostitution. Members of the Buklod Center Inc., a drop-in center for women who used to be involved in the sex trade, said having no American troops around will reduce the number of women exploited and lured into prostitution. Alma Bulawan, Buklod executive director, said she felt relieved that nine US ships scheduled to visit Subic this month and in December have canceled port calls. “If they will not come here, women, especially those working in night clubs, will not be abused or exploited,” Bulawan told the Inquirer on Monday. Bulawan said her group, which was established in 1987, has been working hard over the years to erase Olongapo’s image as a “sin city,” acquired through its red light district that catered for decades to thousands of us soldiers stationed on the former US Naval Base or US warships calling at port to resupply and afford their crews rest and recreation. “When the Americans left their naval base here [in 1992], we’ve proven to the world that we’re better off without them,” Bulawan said. The Americans left their military bases in the country after the Philippine Senate rejected the extension of the Philippine-US military bases agreement in 1991. Singapore requires visa for Ebola-hit African states

AFP FILE PHOTO SINGAPORE — Citizens of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone will need a visa to enter Singapore as part of measures against the spread of Ebola, the city-state’s health ministry said Monday. The three West African countries are the worst-hit by the Ebola epidemic that has killed more than 4,900 people. Singapore’s health ministry said the visa requirement for citizens of the three countries, which currently don’t need a visa to travel to the city-state, will take effect from Wednesday. “The visa requirement will allow for better oversight of the entry of nationals from these countries, as well as facilitate possible contact tracing,” the ministry said in a statement. “In addition, it will allow Singapore to inform the nationals of these countries during the visa application process of our Ebola health advisory and actions they should take, should they develop symptoms while en route or during their stay in Singapore.” The new measures will complement other actions already in place, including temperature screening for passengers arriving at Changi Airport and the filling up of a health declaration card that contains contact details of visitors while in Singapore. Those found to have fever will be taken by ambulance to a hospital for further assessment. Travelers who are well but identified as having possible exposure to the Ebola virus will be quarantined or put under surveillance depending on a risk assessment. Singapore, which has a population of just 5.5 million people, welcomed nearly 16 million travelers last year. It was Read More …

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will ask the Sandiganbayan for a furlough to attend the wake and interment of her grandson who died early Sunday. “We are going to file a motion tomorrow asking the Sandiganbayan to allow her (Arroyo) to attend the wake and the interment of her grandson,” lawyer Raul Lambino, Arroyo spokesman, told GMA News Online in a phone interview. Lambino said that the 13-month-old child — Luli Arroyo and Luigi Bernas’ youngest son — had been suffering from a heart ailment. Luli is the former president’s only daughter. “Dinala kagabi sa Philippine Heart Center ‘yung bata. He passed away around 10 this morning,” he said. “I hope the Sandiganbayan will give merit to the motion for humanitarian reasons,” he added. Chances of VP Binay attending Senate probe slim – JV Bautista

The chances of Vice President Jejomar Binay attending the Senate blue ribbon committee probe on the allegedly overpriced Makati City Hall Building II appear slim after two of his allies were booted out of the subcommittee’s hearing last week. Lawyer Jose Virgilio “JV” Bautista, one of those shown the door by Senate security, said the Senate subpanel’s treatment of him and Navotas City Rep. Tobias “Toby” Tiangco showed that Senate Blue Ribbon committee chairman Sen. Teofisto Guingona III has “lost control” of Senators Antonio Trillanes IV, Alan Peter Cayetano and Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III. “Sa takbo ng mga insidente na ‘to, parang hindi na rin ginaganahan ang ating Pangalawang Pangulo na pumunta sa mother committee… Nakikita nya hindi naman pala kontrolado ni Senator Guingona itong nagwawalang tatlong senador. ‘Yung iniiwasan ni VP na mangyari sa subcommittee ay baka mangyari doon sa mother committee, ganon din lang yon,” he said in an interview on dzBB radio Sunday. Bautista, however, added the decision on whether or not to attend the probe is still up to Binay. Cayetano barred both Bautista and Tiangco from speaking at the hearing last Oct. 30, saying they were not invited as resource persons or witnesses. He then ordered the Senate sergeant-at-arms to escort the two executives of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) out of the session hall. The Blue Ribbon main committee has formally invited Binay to appear at the Senate to shed light on purported irregularities in the construction of the P2.7-billion Makati building. Despite reservations from allies, VP Binay wants to push through with Trillanes debate

Despite the misgivings of some of his allies in the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), Vice President Jejomar Binay is ready to face Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV in a debate, one of his spokespersons said Sunday. Lawyer Jose Virgilio “JV” Bautista admitted in an interview over dzBB radio that a number of Binay’s allies, including the party’s interim president Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco, have reservations about the debate because they are uncertain if the Vice President’s explanation will lead to the resolution of the controversies hounding him. “If the debate will result in a enlightening of the issues among the public, welcome na welcome po ‘yan. Siguro sa amin, ang magandang pag-debatehan diyan ay tama pa po ba ‘yong ginaganap na imbestigasyon ng Senate blue ribbon sub-committee tungkol doon sa overpriced building ng Makati. Kasi po ang obserbasyon namin ay… yung imbestigasyon, nag-deteriorate na into [a]witch hunt, into a platform para sirain na lang si VP,” he said. Although UNA members have differing views on the planned debate, Bautista, the party’s interim secretary general, said that the vice president is determined to face off with Trillanes. UNA is in the process of constituting a team to meet with representatives from the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), which will sponsor the debate, he said. According to Bautista, Nov. 10 has been suggested as the possible date of the debate but said that will still depend on Binay’s schedule. Asked if he is certain Binay will not back out of the Read More …
