Fil-Am star Ellona Santiago upbeat after ‘X Factor’ stint

SAN FRANCISCO, California—Fil-Am singer Ellona Santiago instantly became the pride of Filipinos worldwide after her solo debut on the Fox Channel hit music television competition, “X Factor.” Her passion for music, upbeat performances and strong vocals gained her international attention as she worked her way deeper into the competition. But this teen singing sensation did not happen over night.  Her music abilities have been honed since she could barely walk. “I’ve been singing since I was about two-and-a-half years old. I would perform at various events like birthdays, weddings and fiestas,” Ellona recalls. “My dad was actually the one who has been with me from the start. He would always play songs on our stereo machine and everywhere we go so I would listen to it and one day I started to sing through our karaoke machine. My family thought I could read but I really just memorized the song.” The “X Factor” stage was no mystery to Ellona, who had competed previously. Taking a big step and moving into a solo career, she competed for the second time and won the hearts of not only the audience, but judges as well.  Her time on “X Factor” has given her the experience, exposure and opportunity to further her music and move towards a more serious singing career. “I’ve always been so passionate with music especially because my whole family is musically inclined,” Ellona explains. “I’ve always wanted to inspire others through my singing and performance. My favorite part is actually performing Read More …

PH eyes redeployment of peacekeepers

MANILA, Philippines – Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said that there is still a possibility that Filipino peacekeepers may return to their assignments abroad. Gazmin on Monday said that they would assess the situation on when the troops can return to their assignments. UN Filipino peacekeepers. FILE PHOTO “It’s still probable that they may return,” Gazmin said. “We have threat assessments, periodic threat assessments.” “If the situation improves, why not?” On Saturday, the Department of National Defense said that they would pull out its peacekeeping troops, under the UN, amid the worsening conflict in Golan Heights and the heightening threat of the Ebola virus in Liberia. DND spokesman Peter Galvez said the 331 peacekeepers in Golan Heights would be sent home once their tour of duty ends in October while the 115 troops in Liberia “would be repatriated as soon as possible.” Gazmin said the reason for the pull out was the heightening threats in both countries adding that President Benigno Aquino III has a responsibility to protect every Filipino. “Threats are getting worse and the President needs to protect every Filipino citizen,” Gazmin said. “In terms of security, we have a physical threat in Golan Heights and a health risk in Liberia.” Golan Heights is smack in the middle of the war zone between Israel and Palestine where air strikes occur frequently while Liberia is the epicenter of the Ebola virus. Gazmin, however, said that other peacekeepers deployed in other countries are to stay put, like the 156-strong contingent in Read More …

What happens when Navy men cross the Equator?

By Frances Mangosing |INQUIRER.net 5:58 pm | Monday, August 25th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines — One of the country’s most capable warships, BRP Ramon Alcaraz (PF 16), has made it to Australia for the Exercise Kakadu 2014. The ship arrived on Aug. 23 after it sailed from Subic last Aug.17 for the biggest Australian war games that will be participated by 12 countries. BRP Ramon Alcaraz’s (left) docks alongside with HMAS Stuart (center) and HMAS Sydney (right), ships of the Royal Australian Navy at Fort Hill Wharf, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia upon its arrival Saturday to participate in Exercise Kakadu 2014. Photo from the Navy Most of the Philippine Navy personnel onboard the warship had to undergo the “ridiculous initiation” called “Crossing the Equator Ceremony.” There were 105 pollywogs out of 165 Navy personnel in the BRP Alcaraz. “Pollywog is a term which refers to a sailor who has not yet crossed the equator, an imaginary line which divides the earth into northern and southern hemisphere,” explained Exercise Kakadu 2014 public affairs officer Ensign John Windy Abing. Those who have already crossed the equator are called shellbacks, and a ceremony has to be done in order to be called as such. “Tradition has it that all sailors crossing the equator for the first time should be prepared to appear before “King Neptune,” a Roman sea god who, according to legend, boards the ship as it crosses the equator line to test the seaworthiness of the sailors,” Abing wrote in his account. But it doesn’t mean to be properly dressed for the Read More …

Duterte confirms ISIS recruited Filipino rebels

By Aries Joseph Hegina |INQUIRER.net 5:11 pm | Monday, August 25th, 2014 Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines–Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said Monday that some Davao residents were recruited by the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). In a television report, Duterte said that Filipinos who were recruited by ISIS have left the country in July. The Davao City mayor also said that he does not condemn the decision of those who joined ISIS as long as it would not wreak havoc in the country. Duterte’s confirmation reinforced the claim of former President Fidel V. Ramos who recently said in a TV interview that about 100 young Filipinos are training with the terrorist group. However, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) dismissed the claim of Ramos, citing an AFP military intelligence report that revealed that no Filipino rebels were seen training with ISIS. The AFP later said that Duterte’s claims are unverified. “We haven’t covered any valid intel or any valid information,” Lieutenant General Eduardo Año, 10th Infantry Division (ID) Commander, said. “We have not reported any of the local jihadists leaving the country.” On Friday, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement (BIFM), a militant Muslim organization, said that it has formed an alliance with ISIS. BIFM, however, denied that they have sent men to Iraq and Syria to train or fight alongside with ISIS forces. ISIS is said to have emanated from the Al Qaeda in Iraq. Duterte’s ISIS claims unverified, AFP says

By Bong Lozada |INQUIRER.net 4:47 pm | Monday, August 25th, 2014 Lieutenant General Eduardo Año. FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines–After Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte claimed that some Muslim rebels in Davao have joined terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the Armed Forces of the Philippines said that his information was still unverified. Lieutenant General Eduardo Año, 10th Infantry Division (ID) Commander, said there are no valid intelligence reports supporting the claims of Duterte, who echoed the statement of former president Fidel V. Ramos. “We haven’t covered any valid intel or any valid information,” said Año, who was still the Intelligence Services of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief early August. “We have not reported any of the local jihadists leaving the country.” He added that the AFP does not release any unverified information as it might cause panic to the people. “If we are to speculate, say something that is not validated, it may cause panic to our people,” Año said. Despite Duterte’s claims, Año said that members of the rebel group Abu Sayyaf, who pledged support to ISIS, are still in the country. Año said that the group, which also calls itself as Kalifa Islamiyaah, is conducting the training in the borders of Lanao and Maguindanao. He, however, said that the 10th ID would still verify Duterte’s claims and look into the appropriate action that would be implemented. “I don’t know his basis, but we will check it,” Año said. “We will take a careful look on what his basis is.” Año added that he would have his Division’s Intelligence officers check into the claim. AKSU, China (AP) — Outside a mosque in China’s restive west, a government-appointed Muslim cleric was dodging a foreign reporter’s question about why young men of the Uighur ethnic minority don’t have beards when one such youth interrupted. “Why don’t you just tell them the truth?” he shouted to the cleric under the nervous gaze of several police officers who had been tailing the reporters all day in the oasis city of Aksu. “It’s because the government doesn’t allow beards.” BEIJING (AP) — China’s Defense Ministry rejected U.S. accusations that a Chinese fighter jet’s intercept of a U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft off the southern Chinese coast was dangerous, and blamed Washington for mounting large-scale and frequent close-in reconnaissance operations. Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said the Chinese pilot conducted operations that were “professional and the Chinese jet kept a safe distance from the U.S. planes.” MACAU (AP) — Activists in the Chinese casino capital of Macau kicked off an informal poll on Sunday to gauge support for democratic reforms, inspired by a similar vote in Hong Kong that had a big turnout but was denounced by Beijing as an illegal farce. The former Portuguese colony, like nearby Hong Kong, is a semiautonomous Chinese region with a leader hand-picked by an elite Beijing-friendly committee. KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — On the outskirts of the slums of Pakistan’s biggest city, protesters burning tires and throwing stones have what sounds like a simple demand: They want water at least once a week. Palparan wants trial before Sandiganbayan, not Bulacan RTC

Citing threats to his life, retired Major General Jovito Palparan said Sunday he will file a motion to be transferred from Bulacan Provincial Jail to a military detention facility. In a report aired on “Balitanghali”, Palparan said he will also file a petition before the Supreme Court to change of venue of his trial for kidnapping and serious illegal detention from the Bulacan Regional Trial Court to the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City. The former military official is implicated in the disappearance of of college students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño in 2006. Palparan said his trial deserves to be held at the Sandiganbayan by virtue of his rank when the incident that became the basis for the case against him took place. “The crime that was committed happened during my time as commander of the Army 7th Infantry Division. The rank calls for a Sandiganbayan hearing,” he said. Narzal Mallares, a lawyer for Palparan, said last week that the retired general would ask the Malolos Regional Trial Court to allow him to be detained instead at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame, where other high-profile detainees are being held. According to Mallares, Palparan’s life is in danger because of the reported presence of detained New People’s Army rebels at the provincial jail, where he is currently detained. Aside from being implicated in the disappearance of Cadapan and Empeño, Palparan was also tagged in several cases of political killings. He earned the nickname “Butcher” from communist rebels and militant groups for Read More …

Lacierda's ‘no-el’ gaffe part of ‘conscious effort’ to push term extension – UNA

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda’s remarks about a possible no-election scenario in 2016 was not a mere slip of the tongue but part of a “conscious effort” by the “Balay” faction in the Liberal Party to extend President Benigno Aquino III’s term, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) claimed Sunday. UNA secretary general and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said the Roxas-Abad group within LP, otherwise known as the “Balay” faction, appears to be floating the idea of not holding the May 2016 presidential elections. “Yung mga gustong guluhin ang eleksyon eh yung mga nag-aambisyon sa 2016 but have no chance at all to win in an honest and clean elections. They have no chance at all that they [would] rather skirt the Constitution and acquire power illegally,” he said in a statement. In an interview Friday, Lacierda seemed to have hinted at the possibility that the 2016 elections will be postponed when he said:  “Let’s wait for the endorsement of the President, kung sino ang kanyang hahayagin bilang kanyang kandidato sa 2016, kung sakaling itutuloy ang 2016 elections. The Palace spokesman apologized for his remarks Saturday and clarified that the 2016 elections will push through. “The President has neither decided on term extension nor on endorsing a candidate, owing to the fact that his efforts are focused on more pressing matters of state. It should be noted that the 2016 elections will push through, and that the administration will always follow the processes set by the Constitution. We regret the confusion that Read More …
