Decades after the People Power Revolutions that have toppled presidents–one dictator and a convicted plunderer–Filipinos again took to the streets in anger.

Tens of thousands of Filipinos converged at Luneta Park Monday to protest the alleged misuse of public funds highlighted by the so-called “pork barrel scam.”

“This is people power,” said artist-activist Juana Change, who came to the rally dressed as a pig in a barrel. “If this is not people power, I don’t know what to call it.”

The so-called “Million People March” started via social media with an invitation for Filipinos to show anger over the corruption scandal involving dozens of lawmakers.

The gathering was soon given a venue and a date, with Pinoys agreeing to meet at the historic Rizal Park on National Heroes Day, August 26.

“Maki-baka, wag mag-baboy,” protesters chanted in unison, a wordplay on the Filipino words for cow and pig, used as a call to action against pork barrel.

“I think the last time a protest this big happened was at the height of calls to oust [former President Gloria Macapagal] Arroyo,” Kabataan Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon told Yahoo! Southeast Asia.

The protest, he said, showed that Filipinos who “have long been aware that corruption exists” cannot take the brazen acts reported in the latest pork scandal.

Investigative reports have claimed that some P10 billion worth of lawmakers’ Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) have been diverted to nonexistent non-government organizations led by businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles.

The Commission on Audit gave credence to the reports but not until a manhunt has been launched against Napoles abd her brother Reynaldo Lim.

Recent revelations only fueled public outrage, which targeted not only the lawmakers involved in the scandal but also President Benigno Aquino III.

In a surprise move Friday, days before the massive protest in Luneta, Aquino reversed his earlier position and moved to abolish the PDAF.

“He’s listening. The people have spoken and he’s listening,” musician and People Power veteran Jim Paredes said, even as he urged Aquino to heed Filipinos’ call.

He noted, however, that the President can take the public outrage in two ways. “He can look at it as support for his drive against corruption or as criticism on his administration,” Paredes said.

Ridon concurred, noting that protests so far call only for Aquino to live up to his “daang matuwid (straight and righteous path)” slogan.

The militant lawmaker further urged Aquino to lead by example by scrapping his own discretionary funds and all lump sum funds.

“If the President will remain stubborn, I think he will soon face a protest not only against pork barrel but against his entire administration–against him,” Ridon said.

Tropical depression 'Nando' threatens PH

More heavy rains threaten the Philippines even as parts of Luzon have yet to recover from floods brought by enhanced southwest monsoon rains. This, as the low pressure area seen east of Dinagat Islands developed into a tropical depression named “Nando,” state weather bureau Pagasa said in its 11:30 a.m. update Sunday. “At 10:00 a.m. today, the center of tropical depression ‘Nando’ was estimated based on all available data at 290 kilometers east of Borongan City,” Pagasa said. “Nando” had maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph), it added, noting that it is expected to move north northwest at 13 kph. “Estimated rainfall amount is from 5-15 millimeters per hour (moderate – heavy) within the 300 km diameter of the tropical depression,” Pagasa said further. “Nando” is forecast to be at 270 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes Monday morning and at 340 kilometers east of Casiguran, Auroroa by Tuesday morning. By Wednesday morning, the tropical depression is expected to be at 310 kilometers northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, Pagasa said. “Nando” threatens the Philippines only days after Metro Manila and nearby provinces have been swamped by heavy southwest monsoon rains enhanced by storm “Maring.” Persistent floods amid days of torrential downpour have killed at least 18 people and driven thousands of Filipinos out of their homes.

Jesse gone but not his love for his family – Leni

Manila, Philippines — Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo’s face lights up when she talks about her husband, and despite his passing a year ago, it is evident that the love they shared is still felt and cherished. “I miss everything about him. He was such a strong presence in our lives, and he is a regular husband,” she said. She and Jesse shared “assignments” and chores at home. Leni was responsible for picking up and dropping off their kids to school, while Jesse helped with their Math and Filipino assignments. Another staple in the Robredo household in Naga City was that they shared all meals together. “There would be no excuses for that. We ate all meals together,” said Leni. Things only changed when Robredo was appointed as Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary. Because of his hectic schedule, he would only get to eat dinner with his two daughters. His favorite food was the barbecue, Leni ssaid. “He likes karinderia and street food and doesn’t like fine dining.” She recalled how Jesse, when he was holding office in the National Police Commission (Napolcom) building in Makati, would always come down from his office just to order from the nearby karinderia. “When he gets invited to hotels and fancy restaurants, he would always text to say that he would definitely be hungry even after the event,” she laughingly said, explaining that Jesse only had his fill when he eat regular fare. She added that Jesse felt most Read More …

BRP Gregorio del Pilar test-fires main gun

Manila, Philippines — Ahead of the arrival of the country’s second Hamilton-class Cutter acquired from the United States, the Philippine Navy (PN) announced that BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (PF 15) has successfully test fired its 76 mm Oto Melara main gun off the waters of Zambales. The firing exercise was conducted as the Navy prepared to welcome BRP Gregorio Alcaraz (PF 16), Del Pilar’s sister ship, which is expected to enter Philippine waters on Friday, August 2. Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic, the PN spokesman, said Del Pilar tested its main weapon by firing at a “killer tomato” balloon target drifting about two nautical miles away from the ship. Fabic said the gunnery test was conducted Monday off the coast of Zambales, “safe for it (Del Pilar) not to inflict damage to any other fishing vessel.” The Philippine Navy spokesman described the accuracy exhibited by Del Pilar’s gunnery team as “excellent.” He said that, normally, before a ship can hit that small a target, between 15 to 30 rounds need to be fired. In the case of Del Pilar, Fabic said it was able to hit the target within five rounds. “Five rounds pa lang na-hit na yung target kaya tumigil na sila. Wala nang assessment na mangyayari kasi na-hit na niya . . . so it’s very effective he said. While the test firing was staged in waters near the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, it was not meant as a show of force against China, he said. Panatag shoal, a rich Read More …

Legal issues hound mosque construction at UP

Muslim students and teachers pray inside a conference room at the Romulo Hall in the University of the Philippines …(Conclusion) By Jon Lindley Agustin, Katria Ayanna Alampay, Jhesset Thrina Enano, Elizabeth Escaño and Luis Adrian Hidalgo VERA Files Within the University of the Philippines-Diliman campus already stand two churches: the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice for Catholics and the Church of the Risen Lord for Protestants. Members of the UP Muslim community advocating for a proper worship area have used the cases of the two churches to push for their right to establish their own prayer place. But for many times and several reasons, they were denied. The 1987 Constitution mandates the separation of the Church and State. As a state university that is secular in nature, can UP have a masjid or mosque within its campus without violating the Constitution? Lawyer Theodore Te, former vice president for legal affairs of the UP system and current chief of the Public Information Office of the Supreme Court, said the possible objection to the establishment of a mosque at UP would be that the university might “either be favoring or establishing a religion.” But he also said, “I think the argument already loses force because there is already a Catholic church (and) a Protestant chapel.” Established in 1955, the Holy Sacrifice was originally a chaplaincy, giving spiritual service and religious instruction, but not catering to a specific denomination. That is no longer the case. Occupying a 10,000-square-meter lot, the parish under the Roman Read More …

Philippines seeks probe of Fil-Am woman's death

Los ANgeles (PHilippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) – The Philippine Embassy has joined the Filipino-American community in questioning the use of “disproportionate force” in subduing a Filipino-American woman who was fatally shot by police after reportedly creating a disturbance inside a wholesale store in Virginia. Mylene de Leon Scott, 38, was shot dead on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) by one of two police officers who responded to a reported disturbance at Costco Wholesale Store in Sterling, Virginia. In a statement released yesterday (Friday in Manila), Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia Jr. said “we share the concerns” expressed by the family of the victim and the Filipino-American community that police officers “may have responded with disproportionate force.” Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told NBC News that at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, the store employees noticed Scott acting strangely after running out of the pizza samples she was handing out. Witnesses said she became upset and started waving a knife and scissors, threatening employees. Chapman said that when the police officers arrived to handle the disturbance, Scott approached the officers with the sharp items. One deputy tried to use a stun gun on Scott, but the stun gun “did not work,” and another deputy fatally shot her, he added. ‘Expeditious investigation’ In its statement, the Philippine Embassy offered its condolences to the family of the victim and requested authorities to conduct “a thorough, impartial and expeditious investigation of the incident.” Cuisia added that the embassy “stands ready to extend its assistance to the family of Read More …
