MANILA, Philippines – Despite its debilitating effects on a person’s life, neuropathy remains an unrecognized and underestimated condition hounding many Filipinos now, according to experts. Dr. Gio Barangan, medical director of the Merck Inc. Philippines, said many Filipinos continue to suffer from neuropathy although this could be prevented primarily by taking vitamins B1, B6 and B12 and by observing a healthy lifestyle. “Neuropathy is the disease of the nerves which are like the electrical power lines that bring electricity to the different parts of our body. The main reason for developing neuropathy is vitamin B deficiency,” he said in a press briefing last Monday. The other causes are diabetes, malnutrition, and renal diseases that stemmed from high intake of alcohol. Barangan cautioned that vegetarians are prone to developing neuropathy because they do not eat meat that is rich in vitamin B12. “Basically, vitamin B complex — composed of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 — are water soluble vitamins. We have to replenish them every day and we can do that by eating foods that are rich in these vitamins… and by taking vitamin B,” he added. Biggest Ferris wheel in the world opens in Sin City

Las Vegas High Roller©PRNewsFoto/Caesars Entertainment, Denise Truscello (Relaxnews) – The world’s largest observation wheel has opened in Las Vegas, at 550 feet or 168 meters high. The Las Vegas High Roller began boarding its first passengers this week for 30-minute spins that include a video and music presentation before fading out to let the sky-high views of the city speak for themselves. The High Roller stands more than 100 feet (30 meters) taller than the London Eye and features 28 glass-enclosed cabins that can hold up to 40 people. Despite boasting bragging rights to being the tallest Ferris wheel now, it may not be long before the High Roller has to cede the title to a host of ambitious upcoming projects. Las Vegas High Roller©Newsmarket.com/Las Vegas News Bureau For example, plans for the New York Wheel on Staten Island, scheduled to open in 2016, call for a 630-foot (192-meter) tall observation wheel equal to about 60 storeys, while the Dubai Eye is projected to stand 690-feet-tall (210 meters). The Las Vegas High Roller is open 365 days a year and is the centerpiece of a new outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment district, The LINQ, on the Strip. Tickets to the Las Vegas High Roller are priced at $25 USD. vs/cm

We just have to bite the bullet

We just came from a fast weekend trip to the north for our yearly pilgrimage to Our Lady of Manaoag in Pangasinan. For a change our family decided to make a side trip to the “summer capital of the Philippines”—Baguio, which used to be referred to as the “City of Pines”, until the pine trees began to disappear. After all, my daughter Kristine, who’s more popularly known as DJ Suzy to her 89.9 Magic radio fans was having a hosting job for a grand wedding last Saturday at the Baguio Country Club. Well the trip turned out to be an eye opener for me. It made me realize that Metro Manila did not have the monopoly of motorists’ traffic woes due to road construction projects. The travel miseries are being felt all the way to the north. For starters, on Saturday morning, running smack into EDSA’s re-blocking, I left Paranaque at 10 o’clock and was able to inch my way up to Makati in record two hours and a half. I decided to take the circuitous route through Bonifacio Global City and on to C-5 to Mindanao Avenue and to the NLEX just so I would avoid EDSA and possibly more re-blocking. And NLEX was heaven, thank you to the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) for such a thoroughfare of global standards.          And travel to the north through the tollways is now seamless, from NLEX to the SCTEX (another “thank you” to MNTC) and on to the TPLEX. That present Read More …
