Lawmaker urges govt to bid out Pasig River ferry service

Using an improvised boat, a man collects from the Pasig River assorted recyclable plastic bottles, containers and other floating objects which he sells for a living. Government continues promoting solid waste management nationwide to help protect people and the environment from adverse effects of indiscriminate garbage dumping in waterways and other areas. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A lawmaker is urging government to bid out the operations of the Pasig River Metro Ferry Service to the private sector so it can be transformed into a competitive means of transportation. LPG Marketers’ Association (LPGMA) representative Arnel Ty said in a statement Monday the National Economic Development Authority’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Center and the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) can entice several investors to build and operate a highly developed Pasig River Metro Ferry Service, especially if the concession will include the right to exploit the passenger terminals for commercial purposes. “There’s no question a modern Pasig River Metro Ferry Service can provide an alternative means of public transport that is safe, fast and reliable. However, a bigger, bolder and tested developer – an entity with a deeper pocket – may be needed to build and run the project this time,” he said. SCC Nautical Transport Services Incorporated, the private operator of the now-defunct Pasig River Ferry Service Project, halted its operations after incurring P94 million in losses due to low passenger turnout. The ferry service, which resumed last April, is currently being by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA). Eight Read More …

Only 128 Martial Law victims filed for compensation so far – board

Filipino poet Bonifacio Ilagan, one of hundreds of activists imprisoned during the Martial Law period which was declared by the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, poses by the granite wall which is engraved with the names of Martial Law victims, including his sister Rizalina Ilagan, at the Heroes Shrine at suburban Quezon city, northeast of Manila, Philippines Monday Jan. 28, 2013. More than 9,000 victims will be awarded compensation using $246 million that the Philippine government recovered from Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth. But all claims will still have to evaluated by an independent commission and the amount each will receive will depend of the abuse suffered. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Exactly a week after the processing of application started, only 128 of the estimated 10,000 Martial Law victims have so far filed for compensation. Noting that the claimants only have until November 10 this year to file their applications, Lina Sarmiento, chief of the Human Rights Victims Claims Board (HRVCB), advised the victims against last-minute filing. “We are asking the victims and their families to file their applications as early as possible,” Sarmiento said Monday. “Don’t wait for the deadline.” Sarmiento said failure of the victims to file claims during the six-month period, as stipulated in Republic Act 10368, will be considered a waiver. “We would like to reiterate that all victims of martial law have to apply in person, including those conclusively presumed as human rights violations victims (HRVVs) so that the Claims Board will be able to determine the Read More …

Rhian Ramos races again in the Vios Cup—but this time it’s personal

She has that classic face that could launch a thousand ships. She gets paid for appearances, offered millions to act in movies and even more for endorsements. But this time she’s doing it for love. Celebrated actress and television star Rhian Ramos will once again don the red Toyota racing suit and go wheel to wheel with a grid of 31 race-prepared Vios Cup racecars in the highly anticipated Toyota Vios Cup this weekend, May 24, at the Clark International Speedway. And she is giving you the chance to ride along with her. Seriously. It all started three weeks ago when Rhian became my first customer after I offered myself up as a personal chauffeur in a Maserati Quattroporte to raise funds for a colleague whose 2-month old daughter needed heart surgery. The photo of her in the back of the Maserati was enough to send the bidding war into a frenzy. From a lofty goal of making P20,000, in that one weekend alone, the Maserati chauffeur drive had earned P234,000 just by ferrying folks around. Other big time names with even bigger hearts like Iza Calzado helped out, as did Marlon Stockinger, Rovilson Fernandez,  Ryan Agoncillo and Juday, that by the end of my two-weekend stint, the car had fetched (both figuratively and literally) P538,000 for Alessandra’s operation. It also captured the hearts of thousands of people who in one way or another, helped us raise P200,000 during a charity auction and benefit concert last Sunday where Basti Artadi Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The camp of Janet Lim Napoles on Monday said it will add the names of 3 more senators allegedly linked to the multi-billion peso pork barrel scam. Lawyer Bruce Rivera said Napoles discovered the names of the 3 senators after checking her transaction records from as far back as the year 2000. “At least three more senators…I don’t want to say (if they are incumbent). Sa Cabinet secretaries, wala ata. I am sure that senators and congressmen may madadagdag,” he said. “It is because the transactions are not just in 2007-2009. It started in 2000. So siyempre it was a very long list of transactions and you tend to forget, she does not have a photographic memory that you know every nook and cranny. Aside from Mike Enriquez and Korina Sanchez of GMA Network and ABS-CBN, respectively, radio announcer Rey Pacheco and TV5 news and public affairs head Luchi Cruz-Valdez dismissed the Philippine Daily Inquirer report linking them to the scam. “Kaugnay sa balitang lumabas sa Inquirer, ako ay na-shock at nalulungkot. Pero para sa kaalaman ng lahat: Una, wala akong natanggap na pera mula kay Mrs. Napoles batay sa listahan ni Benhur Luy. Pangalawa, hindi ko siya kilala at hindi ko makita ang dahilan kung bakit nasama ako sa kanyang listahan,” said Pacheco in a statement. It said Pacheco received P715,000 from Napoles from 2004 to 2008.
