IN THE recently issued Revenue Memorandum Circular (RMC) No. 46-2014, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) clarified that a financial lease is essentially a mode of extending credit, and is therefore subject to documentary stamp tax (DST) as a loan and not as a lease. Generally, a lease is an agreement whereby a person (lessor) binds himself to give a property to another — (lessee) for use and enjoyment for a certain period of time in return for rental payments.

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The United Nationalist Alliance on Monday said it is eyeing Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao as a possible senatorial candidate in the 2016 national elections. UNA Secretary General Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said in a press briefing that UNA would like to include Pacquiao in its senatorial slate should he decide on running for a national post. “Kung desidido siyang tumakbo, we’d like to have him,” Tiangco said. Vice President Jejomar Binay, UNA’s founder, has been quoted as saying in earlier reports that Pacquiao will be included in his senatorial lineup for 2016 since the famed boxer is qualified to run for the Senate. Among the other lawmakers being considered by UNA for its senatorial slate are Valenzuela Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian, Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and BUHAY party-list Rep. Lito Atienza. (MNS)

Will Maja be Angel’s contravida in ‘Darna’?

Maja Salvador (MNS photo) Actress Maja Salvador had a hard time answering when asked if she is willing to be the contravida of Angel Locsin once again, this time for the latter’s upcoming “Darna” movie. Salvador drew praise for her portrayal of the mistress Nicole in the recently concluded series “The Legal Wife,” which she co-stars with Locsin. “Parang ang hirap sagutin. Pero parang ano kasi, parang ang hirap sundan ng ‘The Legal Wife.’ Kasi hindi ba, tumatak kami as Monica and Nicole? So parang gusto ko munang ipatatak ‘yun sa mga tao,” Salvador said. But in the end, Salvador said she would rather take a break from playing contravida roles. “Maging contravida? Parang hanggang kay Nicole muna ako, ayaw ko namang magsunod-sunod na puro contravida ang ginagawa ko,” she said. The actress said that she is looking forward to meeting the cast and crew of “The Legal Wife” soon for an appreciation dinner. “Makikita ko sila soon kasi mayroon kaming appreciation dinner,” she said. Currently, Salvador is busy preparing for her first major concert dubbed as “MAJ: The Legal Performer” this July 12 at the Music Museum. “Sana po suportahan niyo ako at gustong-gusto ko na pong i-share sa inyo ang happiness ko sa pag-perform,” she said.(MNS)

CBCP tells PNoy: Let go of the corrupt

Cardinal Tagle with President Benigno Aquino III (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is urging President Benigno Aquino III to fire corrupt members of his Cabinet. CBCP president Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said Aquino should prove his “daang matuwid” or anti-corruption policy by not being selective in investigating alleged irregularities in government. He said investigations should not exclude the allies of the administration. “A government that professes to tread the straight path must remain true to that profession and must be willing to let go of the corrupt in its own ranks,” Socrates said. The CBCP also called on the Commission on Audit (COA) and the Office of the Ombudsman to detail how funds from the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) were spent. This, after the Supreme Court declared as unconstitutional specific acts and practices under the DAP. Critics have been calling on Aquino to sack Budget Secretary Butch Abad over the DAP. But Abad, who has also been linked to the pork barrel scam, continues to enjoy the trust of Aquino. (MNS)

What my 8-year-old learned at a Philippine school

Her three days at the Philippine school left such a huge impression that she has already asked to go back.  ANN/Straits Times FILE PHOTO/TOH YONG CHUAN SINGAPORE—Like many parents, I sent my eight-year-old daughter Deborah for extra lessons during the June school holidays which end at the end of the month. But she didn’t attend an enrichment centre in Singapore; she spent three days at an elementary school in Cauayan city, a nine-hour drive north of the Philippine capital Manila. It came about after my daughter came home from school in early January asking why she did not get to go overseas during the December school holidays. “My classmates went skiing and to Disneyland,” she protested. Our family did not go away on holiday last December, but we have taken our children to Malaysia, Thailand and Japan previously. My wife and I were taken aback that children as young as eight were already comparing where they went for vacations. Worried about where this might lead, we wondered how to give our daughter a bit more perspective about life and holidays. Which was how we came up with the idea for a visit to the Philippines. Our resourceful Filipino maid Maricel, who lived in Cauayan before she came to work for our family eight years ago, arranged for Deborah to join her nine-year-old daughter Charelle at her school. Cauayan city has a population of just 122,000, according to Read More …
