You can’t coach desire

MANILA, Philippines – Iam at heart, nothing more than a coach. A teacher. A mentor. All I ever wanted to be was a coach. In business I can teach many things: how to deliver a great presentation; how to write a concise business recommendation; how to build a brand; how to develop advertising that builds the business; how to manage complex projects… the list goes on and on. In sports, I can teach an athlete how to eat properly; how to build muscle; how to high jump, or how to run a marathon. Again, it is a pretty long list! All of these skills are important in their context. And all are coachable. But the irony is, the most important attribute of all is not coachable. Desire. I can’t coach desire. This has to come from within. Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: Either your want it, really want it, or you don’t. If you have desire, that burning desire to be better, to improve, to take feedback and coaching, to never, ever give up, well, you are already halfway to a very successful endeavor. If you don’t have it, well, no matter what kinds of “breaks” you have in life, how much wealth and opportunity you have had, you will lose out, to someone with more desire. Desire has to come from within. I was a 21-year-old fitness instructor majoring in Psychology and Physiology from the University of Cincinnati when I tried to join prestigious Procter Read More …

Only 63% of brokers, importers apply for accreditation with BIR

MANILA, Philippines – Only 63 percent of the total 14,955 importers and customs brokers applied for accreditation with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, according to the government’s latest TaxWatch campaign advertisement. Based on records, a total of 9,418 importers and customs brokers sought accreditation from the BIR and Bureau of Customs during the five-month application period from Feb. 21 to July 31 this year. The deadline for application was extended twice by the BIR from the original date of May 21 in which only 11 applied. In the first extension which ran from May 22 to June 30, about 3,377 applied. For the second extension (July 1 to July 31), the number of applicants increased to 6,030. This leaves 5,577 importers and brokers without any BIR/BOC accreditation. “By simply applying for your BIR clearance, you would have been automatically granted provisional BOC accreditation,” the government said. Those who failed to apply can still do so as new applicants. However, they will not be issued any provisional accreditations. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “Accreditation reform is crucial to curb smuggling and leveling the playing field for legitimate traders,” the state further said. US manufacturing production surges in July

Quality control inspector Tina Person, left, and scanner operator Dewanna Murphy inspect tubes that are used in the production of the fuel bundle assembly at the GE Hitachi plant in Castle Hayne, North Carolina. AP WASHINGTON (AP) — US factory output rose for the sixth consecutive month in July, led by a jump in the production of motor vehicles, furniture, textiles and metals. Manufacturing production rose one percent in July compared with the prior month, the Federal Reserve reported Friday. Factory output in June was revised slightly higher to a 0.3 percent increase. Over the past 12 months, manufacturing has risen 4.9 percent. Demand for autos surged 10.1 percent last month, the largest increase since July 2009. The broader increase in manufacturing points to stronger growth across the economy, suggesting that manufacturers expect the pace of business investment and consumer spending to improve in the coming months. “Manufacturing will continue to add to the recovery throughout 2014 and into 2015,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services. Overall industrial production, which includes manufacturing, mining and utilities, rose 0.4 percent in July, dragged down by a 3.4-percent drop in production at utilities. Several other reports suggest that factory production improved this summer. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 Manufacturers added 28,000 workers last month, according to the government’s jobs report. That builds on the 23,000 employees that factories added in June, a sign that companies expect demand to continue its upward swing. Separately, the Institute for Read More …

Foreign holdings of US Treasury securities hit $6 T

WASHINGTON — Foreign buyers of US Treasury securities increased their holdings in June, topping $6 trillion for the first time. Total foreign holdings rose 0.6 percent to $6.01 trillion, up from $5.98 trillion in May, the Treasury Department said Friday in its monthly report. The increase came despite the fact that the two biggest foreign owners of Treasury securities reduced their holdings slightly. China, the top foreign buyer of US Treasury debt, trimmed its holdings by 0.2 percent to $1.27 trillion after a 0.6 percent increase in May. Japan, the second-biggest foreign buyer, saw its holdings slip a slight $600 million to $1.22 trillion. Belgium, Brazil and Taiwan were among the countries increasing their holdings. Foreign central banks are big holders of US Treasuries, which are viewed as one of the world’s safest investments. In June, foreign government holdings of Treasury debt totaled $4.1 trillion, two-thirds of the total foreign holdings. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 Foreign demand for Treasury debt is expected to remain strong this year, helped by a congressional agreement to avoid a new fight over the US debt ceiling until March 2015.

Witnessing the world

In my other role as an editor rather than a writer of books, I take raw manuscripts from clients and friends and transform them into something publishable and popularly readable. I’ll write more about editing as a profession one of these days, because it’s an art unto itself that bears all the challenges but very little of the glamor and rewards of authorship. In the meanwhile, I’d like to talk about one of my most recent editing projects, a book about travels around the world by someone who has to be the most happily peripatetic  (that’s a fancy word for “footloose”) person I know. Julie Hill was a client before she became a friend. We were introduced to each other more than 10 years ago by Jimmy Laya, who knew Julie and her late husband Arthur back from when the Hills lived in the Philippines, where Arthur represented the Ford Foundation. Then based in Southern California, Julie wanted to write a book about her life and travels with Arthur, who had just died of cancer; together, the couple had journeyed around the world, from Australia to Afghanistan, from Bangkok to Minnesota, from Samoa to China. Julie — born an Alexandrian Greek, trained in chemistry, and later a telecommunications executive — had all these stories to tell, and she needed an editor to help her tell them. Jimmy put us together, and Julie’s first book, Promises to Keep: The Travels of Arthur and Julie Hill, came out in 2003, published by Read More …

Learn by doing at a rural life center

EVERY year, some 6,000 people come to the Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center (MBRLC) in Kinuskusan, Bansalan, Davao del Sur to observe, see and adopt the technologies the center has developed through its years of existence. Almost one-third of those who come to the center opt to immerse themselves on the training programs that the center offers. “Most of those who undergo training are farmers,” said Ian Ogatis, the center’s training coordinator. “But we also train technicians, teachers, students, and even participants send to us by government agencies.” Among the government agencies that utilize MBRLC as their partner in countryside development are the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Department of Education (DepEd). The MBRLC is a non-government organization located 86 kilometers away from Davao City (the travel time from the Ecoland bus terminal is about two hours). It nestles at the rolling foothills of Mount Apo, the country’s highest peak. It was first opened to the public in 1971. At its 19-hectare farm are various farming technologies that most people can adapt and follow in their respective farms. As one British who came to the center wrote in his report: “This relatively small operation is the most self-sufficient of all of the projects seen on this trip, and has had an influence throughout the Philippines and elsewhere far out of proportion to its size.” Actually, the center was a product of the Read More …

Asia’s longest dual-cable zipline is in Bukidnon

Asia’s longest dual-cable zipline, Bukidnon [via Fullness of Life] The Philippines is a beautiful country teeming with tourist spots in every corner of the archipelago. If you are looking for your next holiday destination, I highly recommend this wonderful Philippine eco-tourism site in Bukidnon (from the Visayan vernacular ‘Bukid’ or mountain), the highland province at the heart of Mindanao island blessed with nature’s rolling grassland plateaus, deep canyons and valleys, alternating with low plains, that makes it a picturesque vista for tourists who are lucky enough to behold its pristine glory. Bukidnon’s high terrain, with an elevation averaging 3,000 feet above sea level, brings with it a nice, cool climate perfect for producing food crops such as rice, corn, sugar, coffee, rubber, pineapples, tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables, making it one of the Philippines’ important food baskets. Now, as for the eco-tourism destination in Bukidnon that I was talking about, it is no other than the Dahilayan Adventure Park and Dahilayan Forest Park, two of the latest attractions of Bukidnon province that local and foreign tourists alike have come to discover and are raving about. Getting there Dahilayan is located in the Bukidnon municipality of Manolo Fortich, about 40 kilometers from Cagayan de Oro City passing by Del Monte Camp Phillips. It is in the foot of the Mount Kitanglad Range National Park, home of the majestic Philippine Eagle, one of the rarest, largest and most powerful birds in the world. It is a scenic ride going to the Read More …
