PHL raises rates further as inflation threatens

President Benigno S. Aquino III tours the exhibit area upon arrival for the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) Membership Meeting and launch of Mindanao Inclusive Agribusiness Program at the SMX Convention Center in Lanang, Davao City on Monday (September 08). The event aims to rally PBSP members and other Mindanao companies around the idea of inclusive business on priority industries: coffee, cacao, corn, palm oil and rubber, as well as possible investments in Bangsamoro. (MNS photo) MANILA (AFP) – Philippine monetary authorities raised key interest rates Thursday for the second time in six weeks, saying they needed to head off the threat of higher inflation next year. The central bank said it raised its overnight borrowing and lending rates by 25 basis points to 4.0 and 6.0 percent respectively, the same increment as the last increase on July 31. “The Monetary Board’s decision is based on the assessment that the inflation target, particularly for 2015, remains at risk,” the bank said in a statement. It was now likely the Philippines would hit the higher end of its inflation target range of 2.0-4.0 percent, it added. It said there were price pressures arising from possible further increases in food prices due to tight domestic supply, as well as pending petitions for higher utility rates and potential power shortages. President Benigno Aquino warned Thursday that the country’s energy reserves were thin due to high economic growth and ageing power plants that needed more frequent maintenance shutdowns. “I am told that the Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – In what could be an early Christmas gift to those who oppose the “Anti-Selfie Bill,” the lawmaker behind the proposed measure announced on Thursday he is backing out. Cagayan de Oro (2nd District) Representative Rufus Rodriguez said he has already withdrawn his support for the “Anti-Selfie” Bill  or “An Act to Provide Protection From Personal Intrusion for Commercial Purposes.” Earlier reports indicated freedom fighters, journalists, photographers, and netizens had apposed the bill. Rodriguez earlier said there will be no more House Bill 4807 because House lawmakers will not take it up in the plenary for the third reading. Also, he said he had met with members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and some photographers for a discussion on the bill. He said that in his letter to House committee on rules chairman Rep. Neptali Gonzales II he has “re-committed” the bill to the House committee on public information. “The NUJP told me that it [the bill] may somehow Read More …

Miriam says Farinas is ‘Mr. Never Wrong’

MANILA (Mabuhay) – Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago on Wednesday called Congressman Rodolfo Farinas “Mr. Never Wrong” after the latter insisted on sticking to the Commission on Appointment rules in confirming the appointments of foreign service officials. “There is someone who is always Mr. Right. There is always someone who is Mr. Wrong. And there is always someone who is always Mr. Never Wrong. Yan ang problema natin diyan,” she said. She said her normal procedure is that she would move to confirm the appointment of an ambassador or foreign service official if there were no questions. Since these nominees had no derogatory record, she said the confirmation process should be smooth sailing. Santiago, who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, said she originally called for a hearing at 10 a.m. and then had it moved to 11 a.m. She said she came on time while the other lawmakers had yet to arrive. The senator said Farinas’ proposal would only delay the hearing as they waited for a majority of the 18 committee members to arrive. “Patatagalin niya e. That is so bureaucratic and I hate it. I hate bureaucracy for the sake of delay,” she said. “I am always punctual not as a personal eccentricity but because I hate to make the public wait.” “Ano pang hihintayin mo dahil their majesties did not come on time? That is the problem with these people, especially people from the House. They are so legalistic. Law is made for man, not Read More …

Celebrating Cebu’s creativity

After their informative talks, Maria Ressa (center) and Kenneth Cobonpue (right) shared the stage with RJ Ledesma to answer questions from students during the open forum. Just two weeks ago, we had a very successful run of our Creativity and Innovation Summit in Cebu. We were delighted to see the participants so engrossed in the discussion and actively jotted down notes as a reference for their future entrepreneurial endeavors. It gave us a positive feel that there is now greater awareness and enthusiasm in developing and empowering everyone to achieve his or her dreams and become more successful in life. We came there with a mission to inspire, but we were the ones who got inspired by these determined individuals. I do believe that Cebu is a land of creativity and innovation. Because of their mindset, world-class products from well-awarded entrepreneurs became available in our market. Their love and pride for their culture add to the character of the products. We were glad to have Sen. Bam Aquino, Kenneth Cobonpue, Maria Ressa, Jay Aldeguer, Justin Uy, Josiah Go, Johnlu Koa and other distinguished guests in our program. They shared their stories and gave advice to the aspiring entrepreneurs in the audience. For sure, there were many empowered individuals who will now take their step towards entrepreneurship. This is what we are doing in Go Negosyo. We do not just hold seminars and summits just for the sake of having them. Instead, we have the vision and mission to develop Filipinos Read More …
