PNoy off to SoKor for 25th ASEAN-Korea summit. President Benigno Aquino III, escorted by AFP chief Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr., reviews the honor guard during a send-off ceremony at the NAIA Terminal II on Thursday, December 11. Aquino will be attending the 25th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit 2014 in Busan, South Korea. Benhur Arcayan Security forces are working to minimize risks to passengers in the wake of a bomb explosion on a bus in Bukidnon on Tuesday, President Benigno Aquino III said on Friday. In a meeting with reporters in Busan, South Korea, Aquino said the bomb attack — the second against a bus owned by Rural Transit Mindanao Inc. since November — has prompted authorities to “harden” terminals and buses against more bombs. More security measures will also be put in place to screen passengers who are picked up along the bus route since they don’t have to undergo security checks at the bus terminals. “So ibig sabihin ‘non, parang si konduktor, si driver will help to profile passengers. Iyong pintuan, isang pintuan na lang ang dadaanan para ma-account ang [mga pasahero] — things like that,” the president said. He added authorities are considering measures like baggage tags to identify luggage that has already been checked and screened for weapons, explosives, and other contraband. “You can ride in the terminal, pero most of these threats happen in between the terminals. So itong passengers na ito, how do we protect these buses and the riding communities from people Read More …
Dominador A. AlmiranteLabor case digest COMPLAINANTS Josephine Solano and 10 others filed a complaint for illegal dismissal, monetary claims and damages against Podden International Philippines, Inc. (Podden) and respondent Alejandro Cruz-Herrera. They engaged the services of petitioner Atty. Emmanuel D. Agustin to handle the case upon the verbal agreement that he will be paid on a contingency basis, at 10 percent of the final monetary award. The complainants, through Atty. Agustin, obtained a favorable ruling before the labor arbiter (LA). No appeal was taken from the judgment. Hence, on Feb. 2, 1999, a motion for execution was filed. The National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC), in a resolution dated May 7, 2003, ordered the labor arbiter to immediately issue the corresponding writ of execution for the enforcement of the decision, the total monetary award of which as of July 20, 1999 reached P3,358,441.84. On Aug. 6, 2004, respondent Herrera filed a petition for certiorari before the Court of Appeals (CA) assailing the resolution of the NLRC. While the petition was pending on Aug. 30, 2005, a joint compromise agreement was submitted to the CA. In a resolution dated Sept. 30, 2005, the CA approved the compromise agreement and entered judgment. Displeased, Atty. Agustin filed a petition for review on certiorari with the Supreme Court. He assailed the CA resolution, contending, among others, that the compromise agreement was unconscionable and executed without his knowledge and consent. While the Supreme Court upheld the validity of the compromise agreement, it ruled that Atty. Agustin Read More …
President Benigno Aquino III said that China tried to pressure South Korea to not sell a squadron of brand new FA-50 fighter jets to the Philippines worth P18.9 billion, a report from GMA News TV’s “State of the Nation” program said Friday. But Aquino, after giving the statement during his visit to Busan, South Korea for the 25th ASEAN Republic of Korea commemorative summit, did not elaborate further. The purchase is part of a five-year, 75 billion-pesos ($1.68 billion) modernization program, which is seen to improve the Philippines’ capability to defend its maritime borders against the creeping expansion of China in the South China Sea. But defense officials in February denied that the purchase is specifically in response to the tensions between the two countries. The Philippines is also currently in the middle of an arbitration case with China before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, which it filed in January 2013. During his visit, Aquino inspected the prototype models of the lead-in fighter jets, which are said to be at par with America’s F16 fighter planes. “The last time kasi we had fighters in the inventory that was in 2005. So by next year isang dekada na ang dumaan,” Aquino said. The first batch of fighter jets will be delivered to the Philippines in 2015 while the final batch will be delivered in 2017 for a total of 12 jets. The government signed the deal with Korean Aerospace Industries Ltd. last March. — Andrei Medina/JST, GMA News
Senator Grace Poe (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe on Wednesday said she still has no plan to seek higher post in the 2016 despite her improving rating in terms of people’s choice, but she admitted: the survey result “is truly heartwarming.” In the recent Pulse Asia survey conducted between November 14 and 20, 18 percent of the 1,200 respondents said they would vote Poe for president if the elections were held during the survey period. Vice President Jejomar Binay, meanwhile, dropped five percentage points but remained at the top. In the latest survey, Binay had 26 percent. “But, as of this time, it does not shake off the real reasons I have said before that deter me from even seriously considering to run in 2016,” Poe told reporters in a text message. She earlier said she does not want to go through what her father, actor Fernando Poe Jr., experienced in 2004 when he ran against then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. She also said she didn’t want the public to think she was too ambitious as she admitted there were others who are more experienced. “There are still so much to do in the Senate that needs my full attention and efforts,” the neophyte senator added. The Philippines has protested China’s reclamation of land in the disputed reef in the South China Sea that can be used to build an airstrip or an offshore military base in the increasingly volatile region, the country’s top diplomat and other officials said Wednesday, May 14, 2014. The white arrow was added by the source. (MNS photo) Beijing, China | AFP | – China on Sunday slammed the Philippines for challenging its territorial claims over the South China Sea through international arbitration, refusing to back down just a week before a deadline to respond in the case. The Philippines infuriated China in March by filing a formal plea with a United Nations tribunal challenging Beijing’s maritime claims. The tribunal gave Beijing until December 15 to reply, but China reaffirmed Sunday that it would not submit to arbitration to resolve the dispute, which has heightened tensions. “By initiating compulsory arbitration at this moment, the Philippines is running counter to the common wish and joint efforts of China and ASEAN member states,” the government said in a lengthy position paper. “Its underlying goal is not… to seek peaceful settlement of the South China Sea issue, Read More …
