Jake Cuenca disappointed for not winning acting trophy

JAKE Cuenca said he was disappointed when he was not named Best Supporting Actor at the recently concluded 28th PMPC Star Awards for Television. The actor said that he was hoping to clinch the award after he received positive reviews on his performance in ABS-CBN primetime series “Ikaw Lamang” opposite Kim Chiu and Coco Martin. But Jake clarified that he’s happy for co-star, John Estrada, for taking home the trophy and for “Ikaw Lamang” ending up as big winner. “Ayoko na mag-expect. Ayoko nang umasa ng ganyan. I was very disappointed. But I was happy it was Kuya John kasi kasama ko siya sa show and naghakot din (ng trophy) yung show,” he said. The 26-year-old added: “Buong buhay ko parang tuwing mananalo ako eh hindi ko ini-expect. But for that role I was kind of expecting but it didn’t happen. I had my moment with it. Then I woke up the next morning, taping and okay na. Move on na lang.” Jake said he is thankful to mother network, ABS-CBN, for his next project “Pasion de Amor” with Arci Muñoz, Joseph Marco, Ellen Adarna and Ejay Falcon. “Everything is falling into place. Nung sinimulan ko yung Ikaw Lamang alam ko naman na magagalit sa akin yung tao and I had no problem with that. I had a fun time doing that,” he said. Aside from the upcoming show, Jake is the star in independent film “Mulat,” which is included in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) New Wave Read More …

Senate panel to probe AI findings on torture

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III has sought an inquiry on the alleged increasing number of torture and ill-treatment in the country particularly during police investigation, as reported by Amnesty International. In Senate Resolution 1049 filed on December 4, Pimentel asked the Senate Committee on Justice to conduct an inquiry and help enact laws which would further prevent torturous activities, provide mechanisms for the effective investigation and restitution of legitimate claims of torture and end impunity. “Sadly, we are faced with a situation where those who are primarily entrusted to enforce the law, serve the people, and protect their welfare may have been the ones who may have violated the laws that they are bound to execute,” the senator said.  Based on the AI report, the Commission on Human Rights in 2013 recorded 75 cases of alleged torture, the highest number of incidents reported in any year so far. In 60 of the cases, police officers were implicated as perpetrators. Of the 28 cases recorded from January to July in 2014, 22 involved police officers. Most victims were from disadvantaged and marginalized backgrounds and those most at risk to be tortured are women, children, repeat offenders, and suspects whose alleged crimes have personally affected police officers. Also at risk are those so-called police assets who have fallen out of favor with local police officers, political activitists and suspected members or sympathizers of armed groups. Pimentel said what was more saddening was that the present number of victims of torture and ill-treatment Read More …

VP Binay to media: Be fair to people accused of corruption

Vice President Jejomar Binay on Friday lamented being the “flavor of the months” as he appealed to the media to give equal treatment even to those accused of corruption. A guest speaker during the National Convention of Government Employees, Binay, now in the center of corruption allegations, said his standard reply to anyone asking how he is doing has been, “Ito, flavor of the months.” Binay, a strong candidate for president in 2016 based on surveys, is being linked to corruption activities starting from his stint as Makati mayor. He is also accused of having hidden wealth, allegedly evidenced by his sprawling property in Batangas province and a log cabin in Tagaytay City. During Friday’s event, Binay reminded Esperanza Ocampo, president of Philippine Government Employees Association, who mistakenly introduced him as “Mahal na Presidente,” to be careful. “Nagkakandabulol-bulol ka sa pagsasalita, alam mo naman kung gaano kalupit ang panahon ngayon,” he said, resorting to metaphor. Ocampo immediately corrected herself, saying it was an honest mistake. Appeal to media In his speech, Binay appealed to the media to give government employees accused of corruption a fair treatment. “Alam mo naman kapag napagbintangan ka, ang mga tao naniniwala agad. Apela ko lang sa media na sana bigyan nyo ng palugit na parehong espasyo para makapagpaliwanag ang mga inaakusahan,” he said. Binay has denied the accusations against him, but has refused to attend hearings by the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee looking into the anomalies linked to him. He has also backed down from Read More …

Gov’t has no solid quarantine policy

Department of Foreign Affairs building. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines—The government still has no solid quarantine policy that it should implement for returning Filipinos from the three West African countries stricken with the deadly Ebola virus. The government interagency body tasked to come up with such a policy failed to reach an agreement at a meeting in Malacañang last Wednesday, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs, which is a member of the group. “There was no decision reached in Malacañang so I think this needs to be studied,” said the DFA spokesperson, Assistant Secretary Charles Jose. Jose said the government will have to defer its plan to raise alert level 3 in the West African nations of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, which would have called for the voluntary repatriation of Filipinos there. The government agencies met last Wednesday to come up with a policy on whether or not it should implement quarantine regulations for Filipinos returning from the three afflicted West African states, and if it does, the length of the quarantine period. The government has been observing a 21-day quarantine period for returning Filipinos, imposing it on the Filipino soldiers returning from United Nations peacekeeping duties in Liberia and who just last weekend completed the quarantine period. There are 14 Filipino workers just arrived from the Ebola-stricken countries who are now being held at the Bureau of Quarantine office at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Jose told reporters that pending the Palace approval of a quarantine protocol, Read More …

Terminal fee: It ain’t broke, so why fix it?

INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines—“It’s not a problem, so why fix it?” Akbayan Party-list Rep. Walden Bello told reporters on Thursday that travelers experience no discomfort paying the terminal fee over the counter before boarding their flights. Bello made the statement after he and OFW Family Club Partylist Rep. Roy Señeres led an ocular inspection of the current process of paying the terminal fee, formally known as the International Passenger Charge, at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 1. The two lawmakers also went to the Naia 1 to meet the officials of the Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) and discuss the integration plan which was halted by a Pasay court order. Earlier, the Pasay Regional Trial Court Branch 109 found the memorandum circular of the Miaa and the Department of Transportation and Communication that sought to include the terminal fee in the tickets as “unenforceable” due to its lack of publication. The petition for temporary restraining order and injunction was filed by the protesting overseas Filipino workers party-list OFW family Club. The new scheme, which was scheduled to start on Oct. 1, was aimed at getting rid of long lines of passengers and terminal fee counters. “The refund system is an added burden to the OFWs. Is there a major discomfort among the non-OFW travelers? We don’t see that because the payment of the terminal fee is the fastest point in the airport processes,” Bello said. Under the proposed system, the OFWs who are exempted from paying the Read More …

CAB starts probe of Emirates’ activities

Rivals turned temporary allies Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have turned up the heat on Dubai’s Emirates, one of the world’s biggest air carriers. Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) executive director Carmelo Arcilla, in an interview yesterday, said the agency was investigating the domestic ticket selling activities of Emirates after PAL and Cebu Pacific reported that the gulf carrier had no right to do so and that it was selling seats beyond what was allowed under Philippine laws. The announcement followed the filing in the CAB of petitions for cease and desist orders against Emirates by PAL and Cebu Pacific. The two local airlines asked the CAB to stop Emirates’ “illegal” use of seven of 21 weekly flights between Manila and Dubai, or an excess one flight per day, documents showed. PAL and Cebu Pacific argued that Emirates was illegally using those seven weekly flights, coveted because they were valuable slots in the congested Ninoy Aquino International Airport, since a codeshare deal between PAL and Emirates was scrapped a few months ago. Nevertheless, the CAB has given Emirates more time to use the seven weekly flights despite protests from PAL and Cebu Pacific, which also mount direct flights between Manila and Dubai, until it formally decides on the matter. Because of the scrapped codeshare deal between Emirates and PAL, Emirates should only be left with 14 weekly flights instead of the 21 weekly flights it is using. PAL and Cebu Pacific said Emirates should have stopped using the seven excess flights Read More …
