MANILA, Philippines – Temperatures outside the COBO Center in downtown Detroit, Michigan plummeted to figures well below zero Celsius, yet that didn’t hamper the enthusiasm of carmakers from coming up with sizzling hot concepts and production cars at the annual North American International Auto Show. The first major motor show of the year, NAIAS or more popularly known as the Detroit Auto Show, serves as the auto industry’s global barometer in terms of tastes and trends. This year, performance is the main driving force once again. With oil prices reverting back to decade-lows and automakers seeing a continued revival of sales globally, a great majority of them used NAIAS to showcase truly lusty rides that are guaranteed to set a car enthusiast’s heart pumping. Consider these figures: the average horsepower of cars that debuted in Detroit? 331 horsepower. Average torque? 473 Nm. Average zero to 100 km/h? 5.6 seconds. Which way you look at it, it seems power is in once more. And though countless cars were unwrapped during the show, these ten are simply the coolest (or hottest) of them all. 1 Acura / Honda NSX After countless teases, Honda, through its US-based luxury division, Acura, finally showed off the production NSX. MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines and South Korea have the potential to grow bilateral trade to over $20 billion over the next five years through greater cooperation. “I think if we try very hard and if we improve the (business) environment, it will not be difficult for us to see two-way trade to surpass $20 billion in the near future… within five years,” South Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Hyuk told reporters during the Philippines-Korea Economic Council (Philkorec) Induction of Officers and new members. Two-way trade between the Philippines and South Korea amounted to around $12 billion last year. For the countries’ bilateral trade to breach $20 billion in the next five years, Lee said both parties would have to work together in terms of promoting each other’s manufactured goods and services. Apart from increasing bilateral trade, Lee said there are also opportunities to increase South Korean firms’ investments in the Philippines. “But this will only be if there is an improved environment for investment, so we want the Philippine government to improve investment environment for foreign companies,” he said. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 For his part, Philkorec chairman Gerardo Garcia told reporters the council plans to organize inbound missions of Korean firms to the country, as well as outbound missions of Philippine firms to South Korea, to promote greater trade and investment relations between the two countries. MANILA, Philippines – Philippine share prices retreated for the second consecutive session yesterday despite a hot start as external factors weighed down the benchmark index. The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) successfully touched the 7,500 mark with an intra-day high of 7,508.77. The PSEi, however, failed to hold on to its early gains as it ended losing 0.43 percent or 32.51 points at 7,452.81 while the All Shares index likewise slipped 0.42 percent or 18.48 points to close at 4,366.13. “Another mixed tone was expected as foreign players checked on funds flow given China market’s sharp retreat,” said Jason T. Escartin, investment analyst at F. Yap Securities. China yesterday released its fourth quarter gross domestic product (GDP) which grew 7.3 percent, its slowest pace in 24 years. Aside from China’s GDP outcome, the International Monetary Fund’s decision to lower its forecast for global economic growth this year also put more anxiety to investors yesterday. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “Another possible source of concern for the global picture emerged after the IMF, citing strong and complex cross currents pared its global growth forecast by the most in three years. It likewise voiced a long-held view (fear) of potential capital flight out of emerging markets once the Federal Reserve begins to raise US interest rates,” said Justino Calaycay Jr., analyst at Accord Capital Equities Corp. As a result, the local market saw a bloodbath with all counters finishing in the red. Mining and oil firms took the Read More …

CEBU. Maria Teresa Borja (above left) of the Philippine Trade and Investment Center based in Brussels, Belgium says the Philippines had to meet the EU’s vulnerability criteria and ratify 27 core international conventions on human rights, labor, environmental protection and good governance. Export Development Bureau Director Senen Perlada (above right)said that it is important for exporters to also ensure their products pass European standards. “The EU-GSP+ is just gravy on the steak. Ultimately, it is the quality that will determine your marketability.” (Arni Aclao) ALTHOUGH the Philippines’ inclusion in the European Union’s Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (EU-GSP+) means it has an edge over other countries in the tariff lines, the Department of Trade and Industry wants exporters to know that it is in the quality of their goods that ensures their products are successfully traded in this region. In yesterday’s information session, Export Development Bureau Director Senen Perlada said that it is important for exporters to also ensure their products pass European standards. ‘Just gravy on steak’ “The EU-GSP+ is just gravy on the steak. Ultimately, it is the quality that will determine your marketability. While we can take advantage of these preferential trading agreements. We should not put all our eggs in there,” Perlada said. The EU has three types of GSP arrangements–the regular GSP, the GSP+ and the Everything But Arms (EBA) arrangement. Before its inclusion into the GSP+, the Philippines was already a beneficiary of the regular GSP, which offers zero duties for selected non-sensitive products Read More …
Pope Francis chose regular raincoat instead of special one in Tacloban, says stage designer Amid heavy rain upon his arrival in Tacloban last Saturday, Pope Francis chose to use the regular raincoats worn by the pilgrims during his Mass. This was revealed by architect Dan Lichauco, who designed the stage for the Mass at Tacloban airport, in an interview that aired on “24 Oras” on Tuesday. “‘Yung raincoat, ‘yan ‘yung pinamigay sa mga tao, noong nakita niya, sabi niya ayaw niya gamitiin ‘yung raincoat niya. Ginamit niya yung raincoat ng mga tao,” said Lichauco. Despite the heavy rain, Pope Francis still pushed through with his activities in Leyte, which was placed under Signal No. 2 because of Tropical Storm Amang last Saturday, even though he was forced to shorten his trip. In a news conference following the trip, Cardinal Tagle said that the Leyte visit was full of many firsts for the pope. It was his first time to experience a typhoon and to celebrate Mass wearing a raincoat. Pinoy-inspired design Lichauco said his design for the stage was inspired by the bahay kubo. “We wanted the pope to know that he is in the Philippines that’s why bahay kubo ‘yung design… Dapat iconic siya kasi it’s a first,” he said. To keep with the Filipino theme, sawali or bamboo mats bought in Tacloban were used to create the stage. Lichauco, who also designed a stage for St. John Paul II’s papal visit to the Philippines in 1995, said Read More …
Keeping the items used by a pope has been a tradition among Filipinos and so it will be for those touched by Pope Francis during his five-day pastoral visit in the Philippines. According to Bro. Carmel Cortez, who was assigned to arrange and organize the items the Pope used in his Masses in Manila, said they will be put in display at the Diocese of Malolos in Bulacan. Meanwhile, the tableware and utensils Pope Francis used in Leyte during his lunch with the Yolanda and Bohol quake survivors are now kept at the Archbishop Residence of Palo. “Mahalaga ho ang mga ito kaya kailangan na ilagay ang mga ito sa lugar kung saan napre-preserve ang kahalagahan ng mga bagay na ito at ma-access ng ating mga kababayan,” Archdiocese of Palo spokesman Fr. Arthur Chris Militante said in a report on 24 Oras that aired on Tuesday. What about the Pope? It looks like the pope also wants to treasure a few things he used in the Philippines. The Pinoy-made vestments he used during his Masses in Manila Cathedral and Luneta are now in the Vatican. These bear Filipino accents like sampaguita, anahaw, and the Sto. Niño de Cebu. Ronald Allan Babaran, one of the designers of the Pope’s vestments, couldn’t believe that their creations were brought to the Holy See. “Hindi kami makapaniwala na ‘yung mga ginawa namin ay gagamitin niya pala… Sobrang blessing kasi Santo Papa ‘yan eh,” he shared. —Trisha Macas/NB, GMA News

Pope Francis in the Philippines gave the Filipinos and the rest of the world more than just amazing snapshots of a series of anticipated motorcades on the pope mobile, a sea of faces in the streets and papal meeting venues waiting for seemingly endless hours to catch a glimpse of St. Peter’s successor, or the millions of Catholic faithful attending an open air papal mass despite storm downpours. Pope Francis in the Philippines gave Filipinos this – resounding messages of mercy and compassion amid tragedies, both natural and man-made, leaving the predominantly Catholic population of a country in economic and political turmoil fired up and raring to go on missions of Jesus Christ’s good news to the rest of the country, to Asia and the world. For 5 days, the country went on a spiritual journey to follow the Vatican head as he met with the country’s executives, concelebrated Holy Masses with local priests, met with Catholic and non-Catholic religious leaders, spent time with Filipino families, addressed young Filipinos, commiserated with the survivors of super typhoon Haiyan and earthquake victims, and blessed a record number of mass-goers in the country’s central park. After the pope’s departure for Rome on the morning of January 19, 2015 Manila’s Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle urged Filipinos to reflect and act on the pope’s messages. (MNS photo) Manila, Philippines | AFP | Monday 1/19/2015 – Masses of cheering believers in the Philippines turned out to bid farewell to Pope Francis Monday,a fitting end to a week in Asia that saw him draw record crowds and campaign relentlessly for the poor. The pontiff visited Sri Lanka as well as the Philippines on his second trip to Asia in five months, seeking to promote the Catholic Church in one of its most important growth regions. More than one million people gathered along his motorcade route in the Philippine capital of Manila on Monday morning for a final glimpse of Francis, the city’s planning agency chief, Francis Tolentino, told AFP. The 78-year-old pontiff showed no signs of fatigue from a gruelling week on the road, smiling and waving to the crowds from an open-air “popemobile” on the way to the airport. President Benigno Aquino then led a red-carpet farewell on the tarmac, as children sang and danced, before the pope gave a final wave to the Philippines and boarded his plane to return home.
